When searching a certain user, what does the 100%, or 92% or any other number mean? -- FireBird

Wiki Troll

This is probably answered somewhere else, but I have to go out for the day, and I'm leaving in 5 minutes, so I'm just gonna ask and leave it with you. 142.177.97.77 added Little Girl to the reject characters page, with the whole page simply 'bum hole'. Does this constitute a Wiki Troll? If it does, what steps do I take to insure that this Troller of Wikis is brought to justice? Is there any sort of general system of protocols?

The instructions for dealing with WikiTrolls can be found on the WikiTroll page. And I dealt with the situation. Thanks. -- Tom 16:15, 22 Oct 2004 (MST)

Category Redirect not working?

I moved the content from the "Inside Jokes" to the category of the same name. (First I made sure all the inside jokes had references to this category.) Then I tried to redirect "Inside Jokes" to the category, but it's not redirecting! Am I a bad boy? -- spblat 18:18, 24 Oct 2004 (MST)

Not so much. I'm not really sure the software will allow a redirect to a category, but its kind of a moot point in this situation. As noted correctly by User:The Paper, content should be on a main namespace page, not a category namespace page. I do understand where you are coming from though. Several of the pages in Category:Lists seem like they would be good candidates for just category pages. This is partly because of the way in which we use catagories around here and partly because of the way we list things. In fact, we actually kind of do something with the filmographies like what I think you tried to do. I'm not really sure what I just said will make any sense, but just know that content should be on good 'ol regular pages. -- Tom 19:10, 24 Oct 2004 (MST)

Thanks. Response posted to Talk:Inside Jokes. Thanks! spblat 20:05, 24 Oct 2004 (MST)

Upload.

Oops. I apparently did something wrong when I tried to upload an image. Could an admin please delete it? I guess I'm just not cut out to upload images. How do you, anyways? -- FireBird Talk

Image:King Of Town Intro.png? I'm not really sure. Are you able to view the image on your computer okay? If so, then it's just a matter of knowing where on your computer it is located. -- Tom 23:20, 6 Nov 2004 (MST)
No, I can't see it on my computer. -- FireBird-Talk

I kinda screwed up too. sorry, my first post. I uploded the level 7 stinkogame boss image twice, one that was too big to post, and one that was a little small but is now posted. can someone delete the bigger one? it should be right on top in the uploads logs. Thanks! IggyTalk

Banned

Just out of curiosity, when a IP Address is banned, what does the page look like if that address trys to get back in? -- FireBird|Talk

Currently with MediaWiki, those on the Ipblocklist are only prevented from editing pages. They can still view pages normally. -- Tom 10:31, 18 Nov 2004 (MST)

Joining the Forum

Can someone help me? I never got my confirmation email. I joined as "bottles98" with the email address strong_bad@homestarrunner.us a couple of weeks ago (yes, that's my real email address, my friend registered homestarrunner.us as a domain name and gave me a mail address at it.) I use Yahoo! Mail which may be the problem, is there anyway an admin could maybe auto-confirm my account or something? I'd really appriciate it. -- Homestar Runnar

Please send an email from the account you want to register with to support@hrwiki.org. We'll see what we can do. -- Tom 10:25, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)

Strong Bad hate mail

Please do tell me the names of all emails where Strong Bad was asked how he types with boxing gloves on. - Anonymous

I hope you mean "Please tell me all the emails where Strong Bad was asked how he types with boxing gloves on." And it won't be incredibly hard to find. It's called a search engine, right below the navitgation module. Look for it. Use it. It has a purpose. (Oh, and sign your comments.)→FireBird

Category Editing

I've been wanting to do some cleaning of the Category:Character Variations ... but when I go to edit it, the field for input only shows a tiny little bit of the page, not enough for me to work with. I swear to god that I have legitimately tried to figure this out on my own, but failed. Would someone please just let me in on whatever little secret I need to know? It's driving me mad.

If it has something to do with only super-duper Admins being able to edit these pages, could one of you please delegate the task of adding a new Dangeresque subcategory (if you deem it admissible)? It's been bugging me. But there is a distinict possibility that it is not there because it should not be there. I just need some closure. --Vannav 23:21, 30 Nov 2004 (MST)

When anyone edits a category page, the only thing available to edit is the text at the top of the page. The rest of the content is generated automagically by MediaWiki. That's how categories work. For example, Category:Strong_Bad_Email only contains a short note at the top of the page regarding the emails. The actual content of the page (the actual links to the email pages) is generated by MediaWiki. Of course, a much better and more detailed explanation of how categories work can be found in the user's guide. -- Tom 10:20, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)

The # character in page titles

Take a look at Special:Uncategorized Pages. Apparently there exist pages called "Kobe#1" and "Kobe#2" but whenever I try to get my browser to access these, it just loads Kobe (since the # character in a URL signifies an anchor identifier). I know that the pages are there and all different by entering "kobe" into the search, which shows that each of the three pages has a different number of bytes.

These pages should be moved by someone who can; also, # should be disallowed as a page title character if possible. Mister Mister 07:50, 2 Dec 2004 (MST)

The "#" character is disallowed. The links for "Kobe#1" and "Kobe#2" both just link to the Kobe page. The "#" on each doesn't do anything in this situation because MediaWiki uses the # to link to sections, like with Strong Bad Email#Strong Bad Email Raps. Since there aren't sections for "1" and "2" on the Kobe page, the software just sends the user to the top of the page. To fix this, all you have to do is create pages like Kobe 1 and Kobe 2, move the content, fix the links to the page, and mark the Kobe page for deletion. No special privileges are needed. -- Tom 10:14, 3 Dec 2004 (MST)
So what exactly are the three pages listed in 1? The second one seems to contain the text "Very similar Strong Mad's character" which appears nowhere in Kobe. It looks to me like "Kobe#1" and "Kobe#2" somehow actually got into the database as separate pages. Mister Mister 19:07, 5 Dec 2004 (MST)
I think the existing Kobe page is sufficient for both characters. I've been trying to remove all #links to it to clear up the listing error. - Dr Haggis - Talk 11:31, 3 Dec 2004 (MST)
I think Kobe should be deleted and recreated. It should clean out all the database confusion. - Dr Haggis - Talk 19:19, 5 Dec 2004 (MST)
Okay, I tried a delete and then making the page again (from a copy and paste, not a restore or anything). That didn't seem to work, so I tried a delete, then I purged the page, then I made the page again, and that also didn't seem to work. Any other ideas? I guess I could manually go and edit the datebase if it comes to that. -- Tom 08:18, 6 Dec 2004 (MST)

Images in wiki tables - front page

How did you guys manage to put the images inside the tables on the front page?

--69.163.67.178 22:00, 2 Dec 2004 (MST)

With some CSS. You can read up on CSS Background Properties at the w3school. -- Tom 10:03, 3 Dec 2004 (MST)

Timeline? Dates?

OK, I've been searching HRWiki all morning and haven't found what i'm looking for. Is there recorded anywhere on this site the DATE each item (SB email, Toon, whatever) appeared on Homestar Runner Dot Com? I'm trying to work out a general timeline of how the site and the characters developed, inspired by an interview I read with the Brothers Chaps where they discussed the evolution of Strong Bad from the Bad Guy into a host/protagonist, etc. Any clues?

No idea, but H*R.com updates will do it up untill January 5 (army). →FireBird

PNG?

Not to sound like a newb (hey, I checked through all the faqs like a good li'l MetaStar :) but why is this wiki anti-gif? Does it have to do with some well thought of software product (eg. server-side image munging software, imagemagick, et al) that has weak/no support for GIF's due to copyright stodginess, or simple protest of copyright fiascos, or afinity for things that PNG can do that GIF can't (eg. multilevel transparency unsupported in IE) or the general view that PNG's always pack smaller than gifs? (I know that in many cases GIF's pack smaller..) and/or just a call for consistency after considering that PNG's win most battles over GIF's?

If we allowed GIF's we might be able to upload nifty animated screenshots like this one http://www.lightsecond.com/metastar/metastar.php?page=sbe-100  :)

MetaStar 02:17, 15 Dec 2004 (MST)

As far as I'm aware, GIFs have always been allowed (e.g. Image:tear.gif). Are you having trouble uploading the image? If so, I'll be happy to try uploading it myself. JoeyDay (Talk) 11:22, 20 Dec 2004 (MST)
MediaWiki allows GIFs to be uploaded, but our image standards stress that PNG are better. I don't see a problem with using GIFs for animation use though, like Image:tear.gif. That falls right in line with Wikipedia's image policy. -- Tom 16:48, 20 Dec 2004 (MST)

English English v. American English Spelling

No Loafing and I are arguing about which should be used on the Fanstuff Wiki. No Loafing says that it should be American English (he changed all the "ou"s to "o"s) and English English isn't allowed, but I thought that it can be both. Is one form of English used, can we use both or is there no rule? «Rob»

We dont' have this problem in the knowledgebase. From taking a quick look at the talk page over there, it seems like an issue just between the two of you that you both need to resolve. Let me know how it goes. -- Tom 18:04, 18 Dec 2004 (MST)

I have had this problem on this Wiki. I prefer using British English on my edits, and constantly get people "fixing" my spelling. Since it hasn’t been said outright I believe that both are acceptable as long as one is consistent within an article. - Dr Haggis - Talk 11:47, 22 Dec 2004 (MST)

But suppose two articles are later merged, or one section is moved to another article? Having to check for consistency seems like a bigger nuisance than just preferring one spelling wiki-wide. I'd prefer an arbitrary dictum to either use international spellings or American spellings to allowing some mixture. Mister Mister 12:18, 24 Dec 2004 (MST)

I agree that for the Knowledge Base, spelling should be the same for the whole article (or maybe the whole Knowledge Base). But for the Fanstuff Wiki, the place is for people's creations. If they choose to create a fanstuff item, it is their creation, not other people's (unless they allow it). The person who changes to "proper spelling" it would most likely be their first and only visit to that particular page. There is no reason at all to go searching (in the Fanstuff Wiki) for "colour" and "color". A message to people who go out of their way, wasting time searching for so-called "spelling errors": American English isn't the only language. You may be able to name some other countries that use American English in defence, but English English spelling is used in many countries as well. «Rob»

One thing I don't understand is this "their creation" business. Do people realize that they are adding content to a wiki? If people wanted to retain ownership and editing rights to their content, what were they thinking posting it on a wiki? Wikis are all about having content that can be edited by anybody.
If people want ownership of pages, we should probably get rid of the fanstuff wiki and let them each get their own websites. If they don't mind other people editing their stories, then the fanstuff wiki might end up being a lot of fun -- everyone cooperating to write better and better fanstuff content.
Anyway, that's how I see it. -- Tom 18:32, 28 Dec 2004 (MST)
Ah ha, now it appears that there is some sort of poll going on to this effect at this page. I will crosspost my comment there. -- Tom 18:39, 28 Dec 2004 (MST)

It think this might be a problem on the Wiki. My obvious preference is for International/British spelling as the Wiki is an international effort, but this is a community decision. - Dr Haggis - Talk 13:51, 9 Jan 2005 (MST)

Hmm... This is a tough one. For consistency's sake, we should have one spelling standard, and since H*R is an American site, the default should be American English. You raise a valid point, Dr. Haggis; the move to international spellings has some weight behind it, but I'm ultimately swayed by the fact that the H*R site itself features American spellings, and it would be inconsistent to transcribe Strong Bad's line as "colour" when he types "color," for example.
As for 69.92.100.220's attitude, if s/he starts flaming you beyond the talk pages, someone should issue disciplinary action. Until then, just take comfort in the fact that you're more worldly and open-minded than some eleven-year-old who hadn't quite grasped the concept of "Foreign Lands." ;) --FortyTwo 14:22, 9 Jan 2005 (MST)
As much as I like consistency, I would never change British English spelling to American spelling on a page. There isn't a "correct" way of doing things in this regard. Though I still wouldn't want to have two sentences one right after the other with two different spellings for the same word.
Of course, I'd imagine that some people may be ignorant of other ways of spelling things, and therefore just think a simple typo was made and feel the need to correct it. I hope we can be understanding of these people and politely explain to them, as Drhaggis did in this case, how British English is acceptable.
However, I do not think ignorance is the case in respect to 69.98.100.220. I will leave him a note on his talk page, and if he continues to change spelling he will be dealt with accordingly.
Oh, and by the way, 69.98.100.220 is ten years old, not eleven. His name is Nelson and he is registered as "No Loafing" on the Wiki and the forum. -- Tom 09:55, 10 Jan 2005 (MST)

Erm...I actually turned eleven WEEKS ago.--24.117.39.10 08:41, 15 Jan 2005 (MST) (PS this is my other IP.)

That sounds re-sonable. I shall abide by your ruling. --FortyTwo 10:56, 10 Jan 2005 (MST)

I don't understand the whole "community" thing. . .

If ANYONE can come on to this site and edit documents, why are they all well written with good grammar and punctuation? I thought that there would be a lot of "lol" "hahaha" and other Internet speech on here, but there isn't. Do some people come and edit the documents to make them readable? Or are people on the Internet smarter than I thought?

That's a wonderful compliment to pay a Wiki; thanks! Yes, anyone can edit, but most of the people who return to the Wiki care enough about the site to make it as useful, professional, and polished as possible. The site isn't without its "Internet speech"; if you read through the personal spaces of users, you'll see quite a bit of it. But if it appears in an article, another editor will take it out fairly quickly. Several users monitor the recent changes page to make sure that trolling and incomprehensible edits are removed. The moderators also do a wonderful job (er, a great jorb) of upholding the high standards. However (I don't have any statistics, so someone may contradict me on this), I've observed that most spelling errors and grammatic mistakes are corrected by first-time users or people who edit very rarely. So, perhaps there's yet`hope for intellectual integrity on the Internet! =) --FortyTwo 21:42, 10 Jan 2005 (MST)
Also, I found that by allowing universal editibility, it will reduce the use of such jargon because they feel obligated to show a good example. But than again, people are hovering arround editing spelling and grammer, so it could be their work to. Im not exactly too sure.--38.112.87.6 12:46, 10 Mar 2005 (MST)

Mirrors

I came across http://www.hrwiki.org/mirror/ today and I was wondering: How long has this been up? and also What toons are these from? Some of those are not on any toon on H*R.com. «Rob»

The mirror currently has some of the Quotes of the Week, A Jumping Jack Contest, and Marshmallow's Last Stand (toon). It isn't designed to be assesed via the directory listing. I fixed that. -- Tom 13:09, 16 Jan 2005 (MST)

Concerning an upload

This is a question directed toward the mods, but could I have permission to temporarily upload an mp3 for the purposes of maybe clearing up the voting on a fun fact in STUFF. (specifically, the fact labeled "Ping" under the dreamail heading.) Just to summarize what I've written on there, I thought that if I uploaded a clip from the song Echoes (which is under debate for this fact) temporarily to let people listen to it, this could help people who didn't want to vote due to not knowing enough about the song, or potentially change the votes of others. Any quick response would be greatly appreciated on this. --TheNintenGenius 21:13, 23 Jan 2005 (MST)

Nah, I'd rather you didn't. It's not really fair use. I wouldn't be able to stop you if you uploaded it to some other website though. And doesn't pinging sonar sound like pinging sonar? It's all the same. -- Tom 21:26, 23 Jan 2005 (MST)
I would say what has already been said (the particular pinging was not sonar-made), but super orange keeps saying that and nobody is listening to him either. Well, I guess that takes my idea of potential clarification out of the running, then. Oh well. --TheNintenGenius 21:29, 23 Jan 2005 (MST)

Uploading Music

Are you allowed to upload music to the wiki? If so, do I just upload it where it says to upload images? If not, why not? I've captured all the mini-songs on the sites from the toons and emails and I want to put them up on the wiki. I know it says you can upload sounds, but I'm wondering if that's only limited to sounds and not music. Also, I have no idea what an OGG format is? Is it for Macs or something? All my clips are .WAV →evin290 10:19, 30 Jan 2005 (MST)

I don't see a reason to upload things that are easily accessible from the actual Homestar Runner site. Not to mention copyrights and such. And Ogg is a patent-free, fully open multimedia bitstream format designed for efficient streaming and storage. -- Tom 19:45, 30 Jan 2005 (MST)

Thanks. Also - How do I change a .WAV file to a .OGG file? (if I even need to.) Whenever I try to upload the WAV file, it come up with an error message saying that there wasn't any imput. →evin290 20:51, 30 Jan 2005 (MST)

I'd try a Google search for that one. -- Tom 20:59, 30 Jan 2005 (MST)

RSS or ATOM

I was wondering if it would be possible to add an RSS or ATOM feed to the H*R Updates page. I don't know how difficult this would be to do, but I--for one--would love it!!

It's not actually very possible to integrate one into the Wiki feeds, but I know one of our forum members made one himself once. He explains it here. -- Tom 05:37, 31 Jan 2005 (MST)

What exactly IS RSS r ATOM anyways? --—Darklinkskywalker|Talk_|i did this stuff_ 02:43, 22 Jul 2005 (UTC)

HELP!!!!!

H*r is my faveorite website and i used to go to it for my free time. But now, when ever i go to it, all i see is a black screen. I also have flash installed. If it helps answer the question, this started the exact same day the quality 3d games on the net started to decrease. (EX. miniclip.com robot rage and crimson viper.)AND I also have a 4 vga card, which is pretty suprising that those 3d games were good quality anyway. Plus I just got dsl, which, for some reason, has an antennae and a wire to go in the phone jack. PLEASE REPLY!!!

thanks in advance.

Hi there. What browser are you using? What operating system are you using? Have you ever had any trouble with spyware? Can you see Flash on other sites? Have you tried the Macromedia Flash Test Page? Are you getting any errors? What are they? -- Tom 22:29, 31 Jan 2005 (MST)

DVD Screenshots

I was wondering, how did someone get screenshots from the Strong Bad DVD? Is there some special program that wiki members use? - Wagonfullapamcakes

Well, if you have a DVD player on your computer, you can just press the PRINT SCREEN button on your keyboard and there you have it: a screenshot →evin290 19:19, 28 Feb 2005 (MST)
Not necessarily, with most DVD players you'd just get a screenshot of an almost-black screen. To save processing power most players use "overlaying", where the window is filled with a particular colour (usually a near-black) and the video card fills it in with the movie before displaying it. Most DVD software has a screen capture button though - have a look in the help. phlip 14:14, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Linking to parts of pages

This may be kind of confusing but... Is it possible to have links that will automaticly take you to a certain part of the page? (I mean the parts that the table of contents lead to.) So say if, there's a place where the Hawaiian Man is mentioned, and I want it to link to Minor TGS Characters, but I don't want it to link to the front of the page, but rather the part that begins with the Hawaiian Man. Is it possible to use the table of contents to do something like this? --Joshua 19:20, 8 Mar 2005 (MST)

Yes it is. Simply put "#" in the link, followed by the section you want to link to. Example: To link the the Hawaiian Man, simply type Hawaiian Man, which would take you here. →FireBird

Page Loading Bug

I've been having problems opening up some pages on the wiki. This problem only happens on hrwiki.org and seemed to only happen after the server switch. Occassionally, when I try to open a page, I get a pop-up that says:

Opening [Page]

You have chosen to open
    [Page]
which is a: application/octet-stream
from: http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/

What should Firefox do with this file?

Then I can choose to Open the page with a file, save the page to a disk, or cancel. Opening it and downloading do seem to work, and cancelling doesn't help. After I get this message, the page in questing won't load for a while.

Strangely enough, the pages which are messed up seem to change on occassion, with previously messed up ones working and previously working ones messed up. Am I the only one with this problem? Can I fix it? (P.S. It seems like this might be a Mozilla Firefox-only problem, but since I'm not allowed to go online with anything else, I wouldn't know.) --Joshua 19:35, 16 Mar 2005 (MST)

Hello? This thing is really bugging me, and I want to know if I can fix it! --Joshua 18:34, 18 Mar 2005 (MST)
Hi there Josh. I had a similar problem with another web site recently. Try clearing your entire cache by going into Tools --> Options... --> Privacy --> Cache --> "Clear". That should do the trick, but let me know if it works. -- Tom 09:57, 19 Mar 2005 (MST)
I tried it. So far I haven't expiernced any more problems, but I just cleared it. Seems like it worked, though. I'll let you know if the problem isn't gone. --Joshua 07:11, 20 Mar 2005 (MST)
Good. -- Tom 17:12, 20 Mar 2005 (MST)
It works, but it isn't permanent. After doing it, I can enter the page, but it's only a few minutes before another one pops up again. Anyway to get rid of this for good? (And I checked even though I'm not supposed to, this is a Mozilla-only problem.) --Joshua 17:15, 20 Mar 2005 (MST)
The problem is with your cache. You can try clearing it agian, and I guess if it keeps happening you could reinstall. Either way, the problem isn't really on our end, so there isn't much we can do. Sorry. -- Tom 12:12, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)
Actually, this is a bug with MediaWiki and Firefox (Bugzilla report here). I run my own version of MediaWiki, and it has this same problem, too. --screetchy cello 12:47, 31 Mar 2005 (MST)

Missing Information

Hey, I got some information on the 'Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon' that you guys forgot to post. When Strong Bad and The Cheat are behind the fence with the Poopsmith all tied up, you can see a statue of the original sketch of Pom Pom's dog that was never put on the site. Just telling you in case this was a mistake. Thanks.

If you see a mistake, go ahead and try to fix it. If you're not sure how, play around in the sand box. If you're not sure if it's a good fact or piece of info, post it in the STUFF page first. --Joshua 13:25, 17 Mar 2005 (MST)

Removed Page

I had begun a page about Coach Z's accent that included the phonetic representation of all the words that he butchered. It was very hard work getting those oomlouts, tildes, etc. to show up. I expected that other readers would continue what I had started, but the page got deleted without my notification. Was I just silly to create the page, or did someone make a mistake? I thought I was making an interesting linguistic page. --homestar3.14 10:28, 22 Mar 2005 (MST)

The page was called "accent"? From what I can tell, the content of that page was mostly non-canonical and was deleted accordingly. Coach Z's accent is covered on Coach Z. Additionally, articles aren't "yours" as this is a community effort. Also, it isn't the responsibility of a sysop to inform individuals when articles are deleted. Everything is recorded in the deletion log. -- Tom 12:10, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)

Character Evolution

I think that we shouldn't include the Yello Dello versions of the characters in the character evolution pages because those weren't ever solid designs. I feel the same way about the Reddest Radish designs (although the designs themselves in the Reddest Radish are valid, the drawing aren't as they are just for that one toon). Should we get rid of them?

I agree with you. I thought the same way the first time I saw them. Although this isn't really the right place to ask this. --Joshua 19:32, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)
Where should I put it then? I couldn't fins a suggestions page anywhere..
It should have gone in the "Discussion" page for Character Evolution, but don't worry about it.

Strongbad email.exe

How can I access the Strongbad email.exe page? I've been able to view the main page by searching for DVD, but any direct link I use brings up a Download dialogue, and the same when I attempt to access the discussion page. Is there something I am missing here, or is the page title incredibly inconvenient?

Try DVD, a redirect. That should work for you. I find it odd strongbad_email.exe brings up a "Save as..." dialogue for you. I'm thinking something might be set weird in your settings or something, as myself and countless others using Firefox and a slew of other browsers haven't had a similar problem. Under Tools --> Options... --> Downloads, is there anything odd in the "File Types" box? Or do you have any download modifying extensions installed? -- Tom 13:55, 26 Mar 2005 (MST)
Note: resolved here. The problem was an offending extension. -- Tom 21:57, 27 Mar 2005 (MST)

New Pages

This probably sounds stupid, but can non-admins create new pages? There are a few topics that don't have pages that could be on the site. Just wondering.

The nice part about a wiki is that just about anybody can do just about anything. I myself am not an admin, but I've begun several pages. So if you think we need a new page, feel free to jump right in and create it.
It's easy:
  1. Up in the title bar, right after "index.php/", type the name of your new page. (Be sure to capitalize it how you think it should be, and include any appropriate punctuation (subject to the naming restrictions).) You will be taken to a blank page.
  2. Next, click on the "edit" tab at the top of the page. You're all set to write your content!
  3. When you're just about done, click "Show preview" at the bottom.
  4. Carefully look over your text, noting any problems with spelling, grammar, formatting, or broken links. Fix these as necessary, and click "Show preview" again.
  5. Repeat the previous step until you think the page is ready to be published.
  6. Finally, click "Save page" and voilà.
If you haven't already, read the Standards page. You can also get a sense of the style by looking at the source code of other pages.
If the page is useful, it will be kept and embraced by thousands of HRWiki-goers. (You should note, however, that it will be edited mercilessly. And if enough people don't think the new page is useful, it could be removed altogether. Not that it will be removed, mind you, but you should be aware of that going in.)
The main thing is not to worry; you don't sound stupid. And if you make a mistake, that's okay too, because there's a whole bunch of us who've got your back. — It's dot com 16:13, 8 Apr 2005 (MDT)

Okay, we didn't need a new topic for that. Anyway, I just looked it up, and there seem to be issues with a new system that won't let some (all?) new users have user names. You can stil make edits without a user name, but you can't have a user page (sorry.) --Jay 21:11, 11 Apr 2005 (MDT)

The swf files

Is it legal to download the files for toons, emails, and other homestar pages that this site supplies in ".swf" format? If so, what kind of media player could be used to view them? Quicktime and RealOne reject it.

1. You're already downloading it every time you view the page. So, no, it's not illegal, unless you were trying to sell them for some reason. 2. Your browser should work, actually. Aurora the Homestar Coder 00:36, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

No, I meant download them as files. Like, onto my hard drive.

Believe it or not, you do download them as files to your hard drive every time you access them.... And the answer to your question is, still, no, it's not illegal to deliberately download and save them. Aurora the Homestar Coder 21:55, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Inappropiate Context?

My friend wants to know if this other character email on the Fanbase is legal, or if it he would get in trouble if he makes it public. It's just a story, but it has questionable content. It currently isn't public, it's just in the history of the page. I need an admin's opinion on this, he doesn't want to get in trouble for having something like this. -- Joshua 09:08, 10 Apr 2005 (MDT)

Why did the stinko man game dissapear from the website?

Internet hates me right now, so I can't check if it's gone. (I really can't believe it.) But if it's gone maybe that means we'll be getting those new levels soon. (Remember that the KoT and Yellow Dello toons were gone too when TBC were making DVD versions of them?) Kvb 09:21, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I think they are adding new levels or something. It'll be back soon. «Rob» 10:30, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Recent Changes Page

What exactly do all the little symbols on the Recent Changes page mean? (especially the red exclamation point) --The Real Zajac 11:11, 2 May 2005 (PDT)

The ones I know of are that:
    • The red exclimation mark signifies that the page is not patroled (meaning that no-one agreed to continallu watch the page)
    • The m signoifies that the creator of the edit signifies that this is a minor edit
    • The N signifies that this edit created a new page.
Correct me if I'm wrong. -- Posted by: -erson Talk 18:15, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
The red exclamation point means the particular edit hasn't been "patrolled". To patrol any edit, click the "(diff)" link next to the edit on Recent changes and then click "Mark as patrolled" on the top right. By having a group of people patrol all the edits we can keep spam to a minimum. I recently started a Recent changes patrol to help with this effort. If you're interested, please consider joining and helping out. JoeyDay (Talk) 18:26, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Bitmap?

Um...you guys never mentioned this. Are bitmaps allowed? Just Wonderin' Stongbah

Yes we have mentioned it. It's in the Image use policy, which clearly says "BMP formats are never desirable.". The filesize of BMPs are too big. PNG format is the best, good quality, and small filesize. «Rob» 06:21, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

Fanstuff Uploading?

I was wondering if an image is uploaded here is it possible to post it on the fanstuff wiki? And if there is an upload page on the fanstuff wiki? I've been looking for one for days. - T.C.

Helloooo?

Are you gonna respond or am I gonna have to kick your ass?

I might not know much, but I do know that threatening the adminstration will probably result in getting your account blocked, instead of taking them action. --Gafaddict 02:36, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
45 minutes between asking question and saying "I've been waiting for a response a good while now" is a bit short, don't you think? If you really need an answer quicker, try here. --phlip 02:50, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
There is an upload page on the fanstuff wiki. Go to the fanstuff wiki. Then look in the "toolbox" box on the right. Right there is a link to the upload page. Please be patient when asking questions on the FAQ page. «Rob» 06:27, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
Sorry. I didn't notice. I'm also sorry, but I was born without patience. - T.C.
I fixed Rainer's link above so it points to the upload page on the fanstuff wiki. One thing that may be tripping you up is that uploads are only available to users who are signed in. If you're not signed into the Fanstuff wiki as a registered user you'll never find the upload page. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:28, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

FAQ Reform

In case anyone wonders what I'm doing, I'm going down this talk page list and adding worthy questions to the main FAQ. We've got a good base of real-life questions here, so I'm working to make the FAQ a little more robust. I'm planning to add several questions and then break it into sections that make sense. If anyone feels like helping out, be my guest. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 15:36, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

Well, I think I'm done. There were fewer questions than I thought there would be. Many of the "real-life" questions here are too specific for the main FAQ page. I'm a lot happier with the FAQ, and feel confident that more people will actually find the answer they're looking for there. Feel free to clean up after me if you think I did something stupid. Thanks. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 17:15, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

New Main Page

I love the new main page, it's really spiffy and all, but I can't find a lot of the things I used to go to without having to use the search engine. Things like the WikiTroll page, the Sandbox, List of Users, STUFF, etc. are all kind of hard to find. Can I get some help here?--Because, It's Midnite

I agree. It was good having all those wiki-related pages listed in the one spot. «Rob» 10:49, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

I don't like the change at all. I had to go through my watchlist to find the darn FAQ. The old page linked to all the important areas, but the new one wastes space with the updates and "?featured article?". What's that all about, anyway? Call me a reactionary, but I move for a revert. Of course, I doubt anyone will be able to find this page anytime soon, what with the confusing main page. --homestar3.14 14:04, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

All the important stuff can be found at The Stick. Kvb 19:41, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

haha, thanks man, I totally missed that! Because, It's Midnite

The Stick lists those pages, which makes up for it a bit, but it's still hard to find those important pages. Of course, it's not a major problem, it's just harder. «Rob» 10:09, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Lists

How do you make those lists, like the ones on the bottom of all the Strong Bad Emails show the list of all the emails? -Stinkoman K

It's quite confusing to explain, actually. You should just be able to copy the whole list, then add what you want and delete the email names from the list you've copied. Make sense? —FireBird|Talk 19:38, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
The list at the bottom of the Strong Bad Emails aren't really special - someone simply sat down and typed them all in (though it only went up to pizzaz when it was first started). The magic happens because they weren't typed into the bottom of each email, but rather into Template:Strong Bad Email. Then all you have to do is put Strong Bad Email at the bottom of each email to get the list. Magic because the list is only in one place, so when a new email comes out they just have to change the template and all the email pages are updated. --phlip 11:12, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Dangeresque 1

I have found Dangeresque 2 and Dangeresque 3 but where in the world is Dangeresque 1?!

  • A remake of Dangeresque 1 can be found in the sbemail called "Dangeresque 3". The real Dangeresque 3 hasn't been made yet, and most likely never will be. Kvb 17:09, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
The only things Dangeresque can be found in is stunt double and dangeresque 3. The email "stunt double" is "Dangeresque 2: This Time, It's Not Dangeresque 1" and the email "dangeresque 3" is the directors cut of "Dangeresque 1". I know Kvb told you, but I thought I'd clear things up a little more. —FireBird|Talk 18:28, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Deleting a picture

I just uploaded a picture that is was going to use as my personal picture, however I found out that there was a black background on it that was not visible on the black background of the webpage that I got it from. Is there any way that I can dedete it, or do the Sysops have to do it?

The filename is rockman.jpg

Unofficially patrolling?

I was looking around The Stick, and I saw some things about the recent changes comittie, so i read them., I decided I'd try to patrol a page to see what it was like, so I did what it said, and it worked fine. My question is, couldn't someone write vandalism on a page and falsely patrol it, so that there i no exclamation point next to it? Sure, it would be found sooner or later, but I think you should somehow make it so that only people on the recent changes comittie can patrol pages, and make a small process to go through to get on the recent changes committie. Thanks - Ju Ju Master (Sorry about the unsigned post, and i don't have those squiggly dashes on this comp)

That's impossible- you can't strict patrolling edits to the committee. Only logged in users can patroll, though, and trolls usually don't create usernames. It doesn't happen to often that a patrolled edit is trolling without something done about it. I don't think you have to much to worry about. (Oh, and please sign your posts.) —FireBird|Talk 17:51, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I highly doubt that there's a way to restrict certain users to patrolling pages. I'm not a big fan of the patrolling thing, so I look at all recent edits regardless of patrolling. Aurora the Homestar Coder 17:52, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
"Mark as partrolled" is hardly the be-all-and-end-all, most edits are seen by a lot of people both before and after someone actually clicks that button - the patrol is just one part of the community that keeps the wiki clean. --phlip TC 18:28, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
There really isn't much point in that, because most of the recent changes are unpatrolled. I personally think the patrolling isn't that useful anyway. «Rob» 05:44, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Protocol for personal message?

Is there a Wiki facility for anonymous personal messaging, like a send-email form that doesn't reveal the recipients address? I want to contact a member privately but can't find them on the wiki forum. Should I just post a note w/ my email address on the user's talk page? Eric 14:40, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You can try contacting them via the email page, which is visible to everyone. Or you can see if they are also a user of the forum and use its PM feature --phlip TC 15:25, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Eric, we have exactly what you are talking about. If a user has their email address correctly set in their preferences, another registered user can send them an email using the Special:Emailuser feature. Just go to the user page of the person you wish to email and you should see a "E-mail this user" link in the toolbox on the left. More information can be found in the user preferences documentation. -- Tom 17:42, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

How do you make a snapshot?

With all the screenshots from toons and games, how do you save them and upload them on? I can't just draw them myself. Amy Whifflepoof

If you're not using a Mac, there should be a button labeled "Print Screen" on your keyboard. (Or "prt sc" or the like.) Press this. Then open up the art program of your choice (Paint works, Photoshop works, whatever) and press Control-V (or Edit -> Paste). Trim whatever you don't want in the shot and you're finished. To my knowledge, Macs work a bit differently here, but it's been a long time since I used a Mac so I couldn't tell you. --Jay o'Lantern (Haunt) 03:22, 4 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I CAN!!!!!! Okay, to take a picture on a Mac, hold Command + Shift + 4 and your cursor should turn into a crosshair. Drag the cursor around the section that you want to take a picture of, and release it. Then, go to your Hard disk, and in it should be a file called "Picture 1", which is the picture you took. You can save it, rename it, whatever you want with it. But it maay not upload properly on the wiki, so if you have another site, upload it to your site and link to it from the wiki so ppl can see it. --—Darklinkskywalker|Talk_|i did this stuff_ 02:55, 22 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Pictures in a signature

SomeImage:small_logo.pngthemed username
Some HSR themed username 01:44, 5 Jul 2005 (UTC)

You need to find out the URL of the image (which for the image you want is small_logo.png), then externally link to the page you want (the full URL, which is for your userspace http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/User:Some_HSR_themed_username). So just use this code: http://www.hrwiki.org/images/a/a6/small_logo.png. That'll put a little box with an arrow coming out icon, so you can put <div class="boilerplate plainlinks"> </div> around it, but that'll add an extra line (for some reason). «Rob» 01:54, 5 Jul 2005 (UTC)

The first one means the page is 60 kilobytes long. Some browsers have problems editing pages that long. Don't worry about it. The second means that your browser is not unicode compliant. • Thank you, once again! I have a couple more questions though about my userpage.

1. Is it possible to have a moving picture, if not just a picture,on my userpage that everyone can see the moment they look at it, and if so, how do I do it?

2. Is it possible to have music playing on my userpage, if so, how do I do that as well?

3. If a picture I want to use was created by another user, but I asked permission for it, would I be able to use it?

Thanks in advance!--Thecheat1234 18:22, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Guidelines for user pages can be found on HRWiki:User page. Please note that a user page is provided to facilitate communication among participants in our project. We are not a web host and your user page is not your website. I don't know what kind of "moving picture" you are talking about, but I know for sure that you cannot have music playing. And I don't understand your third question, could you please elaborate? Also, for further information regarding editing the Wiki, please see Help:Editing. -- Tom 20:20, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)
I think the last question has to do with the situation in the next section. — It's dot com

If I upload a file, am I taking credit for it?

I don't know if I have been doing something wrong, but I don't think I did anything right either. Here's the story:

I was looking for an avatar, and I found this really great one, and it was made by another user. She said that if I wanted one, then I had to leave a message saying that I was going to use it. So I did, and I thought to make it my avatar, being brand new here, and not knowing anything about computers in the slightest, I should upload the file. Big mistake. It's now on my contribution page in my Fanstuff account, and now I think that I have accidently taken credit for the picture. Am I correct, and if I am, how do I delete the picture from my contributions.--Thecheat1234 18:36, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Well, it shows up in your contributions because you uploaded it. There's nothing you can do about that, and you shouldn't worry about it. I don't think anyone's going to accuse you of trying to steal credit, and if they do, you can politely correct them. If you want to use that image, I don't see anything wrong with uploading it to the Fanstuff. I mean, who knows whether that external link will remain active, right? — It's dot com 18:53, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Avatar? Are you talking about the forum, Thecheat1234? I don't see any image uploads in your recent edits. Forum questions should be asked in the helpdesk over there, as you'll probably get a better response. Of course, I see you've started a thread there as well, so I'm unsure if your question has been answered or not. -- Tom 20:12, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Upload to mirror?

The mirror currently has some of the Quotes of the Week, A Jumping Jack Contest, and Marshmallow's Last Stand (toon). It isn't designed to be assesed via the directory listing. I fixed that.

Can regular users upload to the mirror?—S*R 00:13, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)

No. -- Tom 02:53, 4 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Missing Image

What does it mean when I put in an image and it says
Missing Image:imagename.PNG
-^Gordon—584^ my talk
The problem was that you had entered .png instead of .PNG. The software needs the correct file extension. Make sure the image entered inside the tags matches the uploaded images. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 14:34, 10 August 2005 (BST)

Just not so great at English

Hey,

I have a few questions about the wiki/fan page. My English is, because I'm Dutch and 15 years old, very crappy. I've made two HR-related drawings, and I would like to show them on the fan page. Do I have to sign up to do that? And if so, where can I do that? If you want to show an image, does it have to be already uploaded somewhere on the internet? And my last question, are there more Dutch fans around here ;-) HR is totally unknown in Holland.

Grz, Henrieke

Hi there Grz. Just create an account on the Fanstuff Wiki and then you'll be able to upload images there. The images you upload need not be on the Internet, you can upload them straight from your computer. As for Dutch people, after a quick serach I found that User:King Nintendoid says he is Dutch on his userpage. Good luck. -- Tom 15:30, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Help!

My cousin was posing as the brothers chaps on the forums a while ago and he got my IP banned! Could I please be unbanned? - Shadow 23:27, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, Shadow93, but it was your fault you got banned. You wouldn't stop after InterruptorJones told you to. For that, you got banned. Shame. —FireBird|Talk 23:32, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

But it wasn't me! my cousin was over and he went on my computer! he just told me what he did now!

Sorry, but the answer is still no. —FireBird|Talk 23:36, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Well is there any way i can contact the webmaster to sort this out?

You could ask InterruptorJones, who banned you. Try e-mailing him. —FireBird|Talk 23:40, 13 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Trouble Finding Pages

Ever since the Main Page changed, I've been having trouble finding pages, such as the list of users, the WikiTroll page, and the Welcoming Committee page. I try to search for it, but I get no results. And now I have to either Google it or go to the History part of the page and click on the page. Can anyone tell me how to go to the pages not listed on the main page without using the search? Happy 20:07, 13 Aug 2005 (EST)

Homestar Dresser

On the HomestarDresser Fanstuff Game ( http://www.deviantart.com/view/2810064/ ) Is there any way to save what you made into an image? Shadow

I'd imagine that since the game is done in Flash, the only way would be to take a screenshot. If you have any other questions, it is probably best to direct them to the maintainer of the game. -- Tom 21:16, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
You could look here for how to make a snapshot, if you don't know how.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 21:27, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

How to make links

To make a link to another page, do I just copy its contents onto the edit page?

To make a link, all you need to know is the title of the page you want to link to. Let's say you want to link to Homestar Runner). You'd make the link using the following code: Homestar Runner. You can learn more about how to format things in wiki code by reading the wiki markup section on the Help:Editing page. Hope this helps. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:31, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Archive

I REALLY think we need to archive this page. It's too long to edit (some browsers may have problems editing pages over 30 kilobytes long). And by the way, when I go to http://old.hrwiki.org it just says:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to MySQL server on '(insert random Ip address here)' (113) in /home/hrwiki/public_html/old/lib/db.php on line 17
Error connecting to database.
Please contact the administrator for assistance.

Thank you for your concern. If you are having trouble editing this page, please use the "edit this section" links. As for the old wiki, what specifically are you attempting to access? -- Tom 21:09, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Doesn't matter what page, it always gives me that message every time. --—Darklinkskywalker|Talk_|i did this stuff_ 02:31, 27 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I just wanna see the old wiki. --—Darklinkskywalker|Talk_|i did this stuff_ 17:19, 27 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I can't help you there. Perhaps the Internet Archive would help? -- Tom 03:53, 28 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Then what purpose does old.hrwiki.org serve? --—Darklinkskywalker|Talk_|i did this stuff_ 02:00, 3 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Replacing an Image

How do you replace an Image that is already in existance? Like, to resize it or something?--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 18:32, 28 Aug 2005 (UTC)

You name the image the exact same title (including uppercase and lowercase PNG/png) that is on the wiki. A much nicer way to replace images, I've found. —BazookaJoe 18:34, 28 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Thank You!! I wasn't sure if non-sysops could do it.--minibaseball.png Bkmlb(talk to me·stuff I did) 18:43, 28 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Links using images

I asked this question on my talk page. Just read my talk page under the "your sig" section, but read the part starting from the "I have another question" part. Basically, I want to link a picture on my sig from here or uploaded on here to my talk page. If that doesn't make sense... then just read my talk page! If you have any ideas, then please answer here, or on my talk page! --arrow4.PNG~Rebecca~ RJMT speaker-noise.gif 00:14, 2 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Add <span class="plainlinks"> ... </span> before and after the above code to remove the arrow (look at the source code of my sig below if that's not clear). There will, however, be a gap between the speaker and whatever follows it, like this: — It's dot com Speaker.gif05:54, 2 Sep 2005 (UTC)

changing an image's size

exacly how do i do that because if you look at my user page you can see that the right h*r logo is not totally by the edge. so i need to make the picture of the cheat smaller. can you tell me how to do this?

You usually only need to ask a question in one place. See the reply here. — It's dot com 18:31, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)
