HRWiki talk:2007 Spring Fundraising Drive

Might I suggest getting a tremendously cheaper account with DreamHost instead? You don't need a lot to run a wiki. Not a lot at all... -- Someguyerson

Actually we use a lot of bandwidth. The SBEMAIL page just by itself has been accessed 1,241,528 times. We had to go to a dedicated server a year or so ago to handle all the load. I R F 05:21, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Hmmmmm. About how many gigs of bandwidth? If that's not too personal a question! -- Someguyerson
Read up at HRWiki talk:2005 Fall Pledge Drive#Server cost. — Lapper (talk) 05:22, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
And that discussion is nearly two years old. Our usage has far surpassed what we were doing then. Hundreds of gigabytes. This is a popular site. As they say, you get what you pay for, thus we pay a lot so that each user's experience here is as hassle-free as possible (which, besides legal reasons, is why we don't have ads or anything like that). — It's dot com 05:27, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Dreamhost and Bluehost offer right around 2tb (that's 2,000gb) of transfer.. I'd be scared if you guys were actually using that much in a month. --AndrewNeo 15:24, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
For free, I'm sure. — It's dot com 23:36, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
For extremely cheaper than a thousand dollars! -- Someguyerson
Thanks AndrewNeo. That's exactly where I was going with that. -- Someguyerson

Wikia

Just a reminder - the offer of free hosting from Wikia is still open. It would mean ads, but if you look at Uncyclopedia, you'll see they are quite discrete. I've always liked the way this community is run and I would love you to welcome you all to Wikia if you ever find the hosting costs get too much. Angela 05:46, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Agreed. But that's because I'm an uncyclopedian aswell. Why not those Google ads undeneath the external links? --AAA! (AAAA) 10:48, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah. Why not move to Wikia and just pay for a redirect? --147.124.152.117 17:47, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

We apologize, Angela, but the conspicuousness of the ads is not the concern; any profit made off of this site would be a horrible violation of the "free use" that our wiki so rests on. Our relations with TBC are such that this would not result in an immediate lawsuit, but we still don't need to go down that road. — Lapper (talk) 18:22, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
If they aren't our ads (as in, we aren't using them), it really doesn't matter much. But ads suck anyway. >.> - Joshua 03:51, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

First of the Month

Is it just me, or is it April 1st??--Murgatroid 07:43, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, the pledge drive is probbly a prank.--extremejon— 66.41.238.151 (Talk | contribs) 08:55, 1 April 2007 (left unsigned)
It's not — pledge drives are a pretty ordinary occurrence around here. The "The Homestar Runner Wiki has been shut down." message is the extent of the prank. Trey56 08:57, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I only meant the "Shut down" message - I wouldn't accuse fundraising to be a prank--Murgatroid 10:08, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Okay, let me get this straight. The main page is a prank, the pledge is real, and the image code down there is... what? -Brightstar Shiner 12:01, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
You know what? This year was even better than last year! (For those who weren't around last year, there's a recap here.) No drastic redesigns, no crashing skins, no confusion; just a quick, effective scare and then business as usual. AND it's for a good cause - the wiki! But...er...since I'm a student and don't have my own credit card/paypal account, I can't really afford to donate. Sorry. Maybe when I'm older. – The Chort 16:17, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
I noticed it never actually said "april fools!" Although this is pretty much clear, it's still good, just to be safe, to maybe put that up. -Guest

Get rid off the message saying the wiki was shut down!

People might take the message seriously, and this wiki might lose viewers, and rumors might spread! It should be removed!

Well, it's got the "info" link under it, and I think people may be interesting in seeing why. Plus, it's a perfect message to show how much we need donations. If you're annoyed by it, just bookmark Homestar Runner Wiki. Bluebry 21:19, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately the "info" link doesn't look like a normal link (no underline unless the mouse hovers over it). 21:59, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
That's absurd to think that people will only read the first line without looking for answers, then never return to the site again (and on April Fool's day too). —BazookaJoe 22:09, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Especially if they happened by last year... — Lapper (talk) 22:11, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
It's April Fool's day. Come on.Image:Stinkwing.gif »Bleed0range« 22:14, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
The guy above me, got a point. It's all good. though it did scare the bejesus outta me. A to the M: Fallen Star hr.png P.S now it says Dag, yo. heh
I hope that if you were freaked out that you donated! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png
"OK, I'll give you all my money!!! Just don't show me that message again!!!! AAARGH!!!" – The Chort 17:43, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Fellowsites

Following Stux's question "Does and/or should this wiki advertise fellowsites anywhere?", a quick search showed me that there is indeed no permanent official mention of Fellowsites outside an archive. We should make Fellowsites more widely known. For example by putting it next to the Goleman link at the bottom or somewhere on the donations page. Loafing 20:51, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
