Homestar Sawyer

Homestar Runner letting Strong Sad think a "date with a wall" would be fun is a reference to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, in which Tom lets other children think that painting a fence is fun because he doesn't want to do it.

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 02:48, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Arguments for:

Arguments against:

  • But Tom Sawyer goes out of his way to trick other kids. Homestar doesn't actually trick Strong Sad; if anything, Strong Sad just misunderstands what Homestar is trying to say.

Pet the Kitty

The title of the page, "Sittin' with a kitty...", is a reference to the Sonic Youth song "Kool Thing," which contains the lyric "sittin' with a kitty."

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 14:52, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • "Cool Things" is a reference to "Kool Thing," the source of the lyric.
  • There's no other explanation for the title of the page.
  • TBC have referenced Sonic Youth before (Stinkomanual).

Arguments against:

  • This is a coincidence.

Additional comments:

  • Is it "kiddie" or "kitty"? There doesn't seem to be an online consensus as to the actual lyric. This site says "kitty", while this site says "kiddie".
    • Is the one from the Sonic Youth site (the first one listed there, "kitty"), an official version? It does say "status: confirmed" on the page. Does that carry any weight? I think "kitty" makes a little more sense in the context (from what I could tell), and it's a better rhyme with "pretty". Last, I think TBC were trying to get it right, so if the Web references are split 50-50, we should use their spelling.
  • Uh, it could be non-coincidental if they've heard the song and like the song.
  • TBC would definitely make page title the first line from a song with the same name of the toon. Besides, "Sittin' with a kitty" is not a common phrase and doesn’t make sense otherwise. "Cool Tapes" in the toon sounds (albeit only vaguely and not enough to warrant mention in the Fun Fact) similar to "Kool Thing."
    • However, as noted before, TBC seem to love apparent non sequiturs; (the Stinkomanual and thoraxcorp.com are full of 'em) this page title may as well be one of them.
      • May as well be? I don't think so. Here's a quick summary: Lyric: "Kool thing, sittin' with a kitty"; Toon Title: "Cool Things"; Page Title: "Sittin' with a kitty...". How can it be plainer than that?
      • The Lucky Charms fact you referenced was a total stretch. If Strong Bad had said "They're always after me email charms", that would have been a reference, but the quote was nothing close to that. The Stinkomanual and thoraxcorp are intentionally bizarre, way more so than the regular part of the site.
        • Um, I was referring to this quote: "TBC do have a tendency to write silly, random jokes that don't appear to make any sense whatsoever (Thoraxcorp.com and the Stinkoman 20x6 manual are chock full of 'em). It's completely possible that this isn't a reference at all." The line "Sittin' with a kitty..." could have come out of nowhere, other than the fact that Homestar and Marzipan sitting on the couch.
      • Could be, but as with most unverified cases such as this, whichever answer is most probable is usually what we accept as a group.

Hoppity Frog of Lesser Value

Bubs's comment on "lesser or much lesser value" is a reference to "equal or lesser value" in part-time job.

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 02:12, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

Arguments against:

  • This is not just a reference to the email. It first began at the KOTs characters page.
  • In previous instances of "lesser value", the wording has been backwards (you're actually getting a good deal). In this case, it works in Bubs' favor, like you would normally expect it to.
  • This is merely a play on common advertising legal boilerplate.

Strong Sad paints Marzipan's House?

The exterior of Marzipan's House was blue the only other time it appeared, in 3 Times Halloween Funjob. Now it's yellow. A reasonable explanation might be that Strong Sad, having no more detailed information than "a wall," painted the outside wall.

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 01:21, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • It's been suggested that Marzipan's house only appears blue in 3 Times Halloween Funjob because it is dark. However, Homestar's house is also yellow, and in Homestar Presents: Presents we see what yellow becomes in the dark: gray.
  • It just seems important that, in a 'toon so concerned with yellow paint, a house we've always assumed was blue is shown to be yellow.

Arguments against:

  • There's no other reason to assume that Strong Sad painted any wall.
  • Her house was seen as blue earlier because it was dark. (Note that the grass also turns blue when it's dark.)
  • Homestar's house has changed colors depending on the time of day and the weather. Compare the two examples in the comments below.
  • Homestar's house was gray because of the snow on the ground.
    • The bushes in the background of the "Homestar Presents" shot are gray-ish, lending support to the "house matches bushes" theory.
  • Both Homestar's and Marzipan's houses have gone through significant renovations over the course of the show; it is more likely that she simply had it redecorated beforehand.

Additional comments:

  • The fact that Homestar's house is yellow might be confusing; some have already theorized that various rooms generally accepted to be in Marzipan's house are actually in Homestar's, or that they are in fact the same house. However, comparison of the exteriors--Marzipan's in 3 Times Halloween Funjob and Cool Things and Homestar's in rampage and Homestar Presents: Presents--show that the porches are consistently different (Marzipan's has more top step and righter angles).
  • I hate these arguments about the colors of the houses. Keep in mind that TBC said people shouldn't get caught up about inconsistencies in their cartoons.
  • This is an interesting hypothesis... but nothing more. There's no hint of proof.

The non-dripping yella shades

The dripping yella shades are, in fact, dry when Homestar returns them.

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 17:57, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • They really are. If you look at them when they are on the counter, the paint is no longer running. Also, there are no yellow spots on the counter where the wet paint would have landed.

Arguments against:

  • It's seen dripping in the scene just before; paint does not dry that quickly.

Additional comments:

  • Even if they are, so?
  • They may not be dry, but they're certainly not dripping! Might this be revised as a goof?
    • That sounds more plausible.
      • I think it is a goof. They are dripping one second and stop when it cuts to a wide shot.

Cool, Cool Glasses

Homestar's shades are the same style sunglasses he wore in dangeresque 3.

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 14:14, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • They are. Compare them. The fact was worded carefully so as to say they were the same style, and not necessarily the same pair.

Arguments against:

  • So what? It's not like there have been many alternative kinds of shades showing up. It's just the graphic TBC use for "cool shades"
    • Dangeresque's cool shades are different than these, however. So the Brothers Chaps DO have some alternative shades.
  • They're also similar to the glasses he wore (on TV) in Bug In Mouth Disease.
  • Sunglasses are a common item; if you have to look closely to see what style they are, then it's not noteworthy.
  • If they truly were the same style, you'd be able to see the venetian blinds under the paint, but you can't.

Additional comments:

They're just one of many sunglasses
  • Upon further investigation, Dangeresque Too's shades appear to be a variant of the ones from the bet and Bug in Mouth. This fact needs revision.
    • Upon further reflection, sunglasses are a common item, not a reference. This fact needs declination.
  • There is a subtle difference between Dangeresque Too's and the one from Bug in Mouth. The frames don't curve in the one from Bug in Mouth. Dangeresue Too's do. The ones from Cool Things are Dangeresque Too's.
    • Disagree. They curve just as much.
      • Diasagree. Look closesly. Bug in Mouths are more like a block. They keep their width and they don't curve. This one loses its width and they curve.
        • View the SWF file of the bet, pause, and zoom in on Homestar's glasses. They curve at the top.
          • Yes they do curve. But it's not nearly as noticeable as the other.
            • So what if the shape is similar, the lenses are smooth, not venetian blinds like in the email.

Proposed revision:

Homestar's shades are the same shape and style as the ones first seen in the bet.

Arguments for:

  • Corrected for the above's errors of first appearance.

Arguments against:

  • This still isn't notable.

Additional comments:

  • They're just sunglasses. Typical sunglasses. They're not really from anything.
  • Main Page 3 contains yet another variant of these sunglasses. Linking to Homestar's Shades would suffice.

Introducing silhouettes

The members of Cool Tapes being silhoutted in different colors while moving around the screen greatly resembles Intro 2.

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 14:29, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • It's true, it's the first thing I thought of when I myself saw it.

Arguments against:

  • It's really more of a music video staple or cliche.
  • The colors aren't the same.
  • The silhouettes in the intro are static; those in the toon move and have instruments.
  • Aside from being silhoutted there is absolutely no similarities between the two.

Additional comments:

  • Silhouetting is a common technique. Each use of it is not a reference to other uses.

Button Dance

The original button to this toon on the main page read "hey, a new toon!!"

From: Cool Things
Posted on: 13:45, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Arguments for:

  • You're going to decline something that's true?
  • It's just another interesting, yet useless, remark - like all the other remarks.

Arguments against:

  • We never make any remarks to what the new updates button says on the toon's article.

Additional comments:

  • That's true, but maybe we should start.
    • Perhaps. But it certainly shouldn't be a fun fact. It isn't as though the button for this toon is any more interesting than the buttons for other toons. If you're so set on noting it, maybe it could go up the top of the article with Page Title etc.
  • No. We shouldn't.
    • Why not?
  • If it changes later, won't we note both versions on the update page?
