== Guided Tour ==

Wikicities has a feature that lets people [http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/Wikicities:Wikicities_tour/List_of_wikis_in_this_tour tour different wikis] to get to know their feel and the way that wikis in general work. It might be helpful to new users if we added a tour to the [[HRWiki:Introduction|Introduction]] pages. It could help show people pages like how a page for a toon looks, how a gallery page looks (eg. [[Characters]]), [[STUFF]], etc. It would be a good way to show new users all the different types of pages on the wiki and help get them into it faster. -[[User:AtionSong|<font face="BankGothic Md BT">AtionSong</font>]] 02:42, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

== Merge Crazy ==
Don't you think we're going a little crazy with merging things like random food items and companies and such? Are small pages so bad? I'm fine with having stuff from one general location merged, such as radio stations from [[radio]] and made up animals from [[animal]], and even [[Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters]] simply because there's so many that they're almost an inside joke, but I sort of liked all those various food, company, etc pages lying around. Although there are some drawbacks, they're easier to link to and distinguish on seperate pages. - {{User:Joshua/sig}} 04:23, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

I suppose it was a somewhat hasty decision to merge them though. It could be reverted again, but I think some standards are desperately needed. At the very least, the redirects are all still there. ::::I bet a lot of people would have liked to give input but (1) this is a holiday week, and (2) the time between the proposal and the implementation of the project was just a few hours. When someone proposes major changes like this, no action should be taken for ''days'', not hours. And here in the case of the merged pages, after the first page was done, there should have been time to give feedback to consider whether we wanted to make even more sweeping changes. As a comparison, consider that nearly all STUFF items stay open for at least four days, ususally a week. The more controversial ones stay open two weeks. And when we were deciding whether to implement the current STUFF system, the discussion went on for more than a ''month''. :::::I think it was too hasty. For one, I was busy with the Fanstuff Wiki's problems at the time. Anyway, I personally think that things should be merged into one page when they all follow the same theme. Things such as [[Minor Teen Girl Squad Characters]], [[Virus Character Variations]] and [[Made-Up Strong Bad Animals]] are good merges. But things like stuff in [[Minor Foods]]... some of those pages had plenty of content. The only thing that connects stuff like Staple Sauce and Super Mud is that they are food and that only appeared once. ::::::Just in case it is on anyone's mind, I just wanted to state for the record that there is absolutely no technical reason for having things in one page.  Some like to toss around words like "bandwidth" and "space constraints" sometimes, but I want to make very clear that these things should never be a deciding factor when it comes to merging pages.
::::::I happen to have no problem at all with smaller-type articles and have never really liked the longer type pages that group things.  I mean, we clearly don't need an article for each individual [[Floppy Disk Container]] or [[Halloween Costumes|Halloween Costume]], but if a page has even a little good content (a few sentences) and can be linked to from at least one article, then our category system should be taking care of the grouping.

When items are on the same page, two things happen: '''you see them''', even if you hadn't been looking for them, and it's easy to compare them. One drawback in the wiki format is that we have a lot of interesting pages that might never get noticed because no one clicks through to them. So if an article contains fairly important information but someone would be unlikely to seek it out by name, it might actually be an argument ''for'' merging. And in cases where the entries on the page are highly related, merging is good for comparisons: you can look at the [[Halloween Potion-ma-jig Costumes]] and see that exactly 5 are inspired by TV shows while 3 are inspired by movies and 2 by video games. To let you browse through various articles (with minimal information distracting or overwhelming you) so that you can find the one you want or see an interesting article that you hadn't considered looking for and read it. :Wow. This looks strange to me (some of the words I couldn't remember well, so I used the translation software and it gave me answers in a different dialect from mine). I decided not to translate Homestar Runner, a lot of shows translated into spanish do that. I didn't even try to tranlsate his name... (ok I ran it through the translation software but ick!) Oh man, if any of you have heard american shows dubbed in spanish you'll notice that it's always ''the same voice actors for all of the shows!''  You get to recognize their voices pretty well (and they're so off from what the original voices sound like).  I can picture it now... Strongbad having this droopy, dull sounding voice! Wow.  Oh! yeah and the funniest thing would be the segment in spanish!  You'd probably have to translate that back to english:

* 210.100.138.124 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer
* 211.115.69.146 = Resolves to South Korea, but I can't get a specific answer

* 212.138.64.174 = cache4-2.jed.isu.net.sa (Saudi Arabia)

I've undertaken to make all the disambiguation statements as consistent as possible, and developed a suite of templates to help maintain the consistency, save time, and facilitate any future wiki-wide formatting changes.  (As with any adoption of a standard, there are a few compromises to be made, but I think they'll be outweighed by the benefits.) == Punctuation vs. Hyperlinks ==

No doubt this has been discussed before at length, but what's the consensus on formatting links when ambiguity arises?  There's no problem with references like "in the Strong Bad Email [[montage]]", but when both entities get hyperlinked (as in [[Champeenship]]) it gets a bit hinky:

: First seen in the [[Strong Bad Email]] [[montage]].

This makes it sound like we're talking about an "email montage".  Has there been any discussion about adopting a different standard?  Here are a few possibilities off the top of my head:

# First seen in the [[Strong Bad Email]] "[[montage]]."
# First seen in the [[Strong Bad Email]] called [[montage]].
# First seen in [[montage]] (a [[Strong Bad Email]]).
# First seen in [[montage]].

Number 1 solves the problem, but then for consistency we'd probably want to put quotation marks around names of toons/emails/etc. ''everywhere'', and in non-ambiguous cases (the majority) it seems like overkill to have both a hyperlink ''and'' quotation marks.

Numbers 2 and 3 seem overly verbose, and a bit talk-down-to-the-readery.

In short, if you are using a word, phrase, or name in its normal sense (and linking as a convenience), then link only once; if you are using the word or phrase as a title, then link always.  This can maybe be stated alternately as "if the word or phrase is a title that would need quotes, italics, or underlining in print, then link always".
