Wiki title

I think we should move this page to Homestar Runner Wiki (click the link to see what it could look like). That way, it will show the actual title of the wiki instead of boring ol' "Main Page" (which of course would be left as a redirect). The MediaWiki front page is an excellent example of how it could be. — It's dot com 01:24, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

I really like the idea. It shows exactly who we are upon entering. If I was in charge, I'd've done it from th' start. --DorianGray
I also support the idea, maybe we should make Main Page a dis. page, though, for Main Pages and Homestar Runner Wiki. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 01:30, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Support. —FireBird|Talk 01:33, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Rogue Leader: Main Page and Talk:Main Page would have to redirect to the respective Homestar Runner Wiki pages, due to the amount of links to them, both internal and external. — It's dot com 01:34, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Complete Support: The Main Page talks about The Homestar Runner Wiki not Main Page --Dacheatbot · Communicate 01:44, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
It's dot com: That can be accomplished simply by changing the text of MediaWiki:Mainpage from "Main Page" to "Homestar Runner Wiki". — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 01:56, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Heh. Yes, I know. :) I wanted people to be able to see a preview without being too drastic. — It's dot com 02:06, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I like your idea, Dot com. I'm surprised nobody ever thought of this before. — Seriously (Talk) 02:08, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I support leaving it Main Page. Most to all MediaWiki wikis (257,000,000 at this moment) leave the title as the default. This page is the sole exception to the "articles are in the main namespace" rule, and giving it a different title would make it seem as if this was an article about the Homestar Runner Wiki (remember, we already have an article for that at HRWiki:A History). This is the main page of the wiki, it's our cover page and our table of contents. It's not the Homestar Runner Wiki. The entire wiki is the Homestar Runner Wiki. (I also never liked it when our main page was called HomestarRunnerWiki way back when.) -- Tom 02:14, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Most to all wikis use Main Page because they either don't know they can change it or don't have the access. I myself didn't know until I saw MediaWiki. If we're going to have one exception in the main namespace, shouldn't it be such that the title of the wiki can be on the front page? — It's dot com 02:23, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Tom. SaltyTalk! 02:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, isn't there some sort of weird developer stuff (I know, I'm vague) that you could do to change the description at the top from "Article" to "Main Page"? I think that would solve the whole problem. — Seriously (Talk) 02:39, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree with seriously. Although I like Its dot comes Idea.--H*Bad 03:25, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Following with what Tom said, I completely disagree that Main Page should be changed to Homestar Runner Wiki. The front page is not the whole wiki, it's just the main page. It has links to the other pages that make up the Homestar Runner Wiki. The pratical use of a "Homestar Runner Wiki" page would be to talk about HRWiki, which would go under the HRWiki: namespace, therefore calling itself HRWiki:About, which we already have. — Lapper (talk) 03:27, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Although it would be rater inconvenient. It may just be me, but that seems like to long of a title for the Main Page.--H*Bad 03:31, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Lapper: I think you're splitting hairs here. The reason for the change isn't so that we have an article about the wiki itself, it's so that the words "Homestar Runner Wiki" will appear, as a title like in that link, at the top of the page all professional-like. I suppose one could make a case that a page called "Homestar Runner Wiki" is just fine for a table of contents of the wiki, and certainly "Talk:Homestar Runner Wiki" would be a good change, since the page is devoted to general discussion about wiki matters and isn't really used much to talk about the contents or format of the front page. — It's dot com 03:43, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
That's not what I was saying; I was saying that that would be the pratical use for such a title. I prefer the term "Main Page", although "Talk:Main Page" is somewhat misleading, as most of the time it isn't for discussion of the Main Page. — Lapper (talk) 03:46, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
It looks much better as Main Page. That might confuse some users.(Not too sure about that, but maybe.) Plus it already says Homestar Runner Wiki on it.--H*Bad 03:50, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm happy with leaving it as Main Page. Sort of a "If it ain't broke..." type mentality, but at the same time I think it looks better and is more common and descriptive as it is. Thunderbird 07:08, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I think we should make it the Homestar Runner Wiki way. It looks better and makes more sense. Dagger (talk · edits) 17:43, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Support. I can see the arguments for both sides. The strongest argument against, I think, is that the main page is not the whole Homestar Runner Wiki, but just the entry portal. That being said, I can't see that confusing anyone or causing problems. "Homestar Runner Wiki" would look a little nicer, and it would make the purpose of this talk page more clear (it took me a long time to realize that discussions about the wiki in general were occurring here). Trey56 18:59, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't care too much, but I would prefer that it stay as the Main Page, for all the reasons above, and most people will already see from the logo that this is the HRWiki, and the Main Page title will complement it by saying that it's the main page. Plus, I don't want to stare at a note that I was redirected when I enter the site. Another Option: we could do what Wikipedia does, and cut out the title completely. Something inside me tells me that WP editors got into the same argument we are, and found this to be the best option to satisfy both sides. —BazookaJoe 19:26, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
There would be a redirect message? If so, I agree; that would be ugly. Trey56 19:57, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
No, there would be no redirect message, assuming you don't type all the way out to "/Main Page" each time you load the site. — It's dot com 19:58, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
It would just look weird. Plus I like the word: Main Page as the title.--H*Bad 19:31, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Something to point out is the fact that Wikipedia can't do this, because they already have an article about the encyclopedia itself in the same place where the title article would go. Most other wikis don't have this problem. — It's dot com 20:17, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm kinda in between... on one hand, it really is the Main Page and that's a descriptive title ('Homestar Runner Wiki - Homestar Runner Wiki' would look weird but maybe that can be fixed). On the other hand, 'Homestar Runner Wiki' looks a ton nicer and more welcoming. I'll say I support. It wouldn't look like an article about the Homestar Runner Wiki any more than 'Main Page' looks like an article about the Main Page on H*R. Ed lim smildE / talk
To support, I would have to see a benefit to the change, one that is a noticeable improvement over how it is now. If it is changed as proposed, we shall still have a name that does not adequately address the page. THe only problem I've seen noted about the current title is that it is "boring" - but being an encyclopedia, this wiki should not be trying to be "exciting", rather it should be noting what is exciting about Homestar Runner. Since I see no real benefit from such a change, I must decline.
However, I counterpropose: change name to "Homestar Runner Wiki - Main Page". This allows the page to be identified as exactly what it is, but also serve as a suitable cover for the encyclopedia. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:20, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
I support moving it to Homestar Runner Wiki.Trelawney
In response to Qermaq, although this is indeed a "compromise", I believe that that title is rather long, not only for a URL, but for the H1 title itself. Perhaps it is an accurate description, but it is slightly wordy. — Lapper (talk) 01:25, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Why not move it into the HRWiki: namespace? There's no real reason why we couldn't... If the appropriate MediaWiki pages are changed, there's nothing stopping the main page from being HRWiki:Main Page, or HRWiki:Homestar Runner Wiki or something like that... and it would answer the question about it being a Main Page, rather than being about a Main Page. And for those that are wondering: would correctly load the right page, no "Redirected" message. Main Page would have to be kept as a redirect though, for people that have bookmarked, or as an external link on their page. After enough time, it could concievably become a redirect to Main Pages with a disambig notice to the new main page, but that's a discussion for then, not now. phlip TC 13:54, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Phlip's idea of HRWiki:Main Page holds merit, and I would support it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:31, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
I would rather leave it unchanged than do that. To borrow a phrase, it is not a noticeable improvement over how it is now. — It's dot com 21:39, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
"HRWiki:Main Page" is a pretty good compromise, and it might even solve the talk page ambiguity problem. "HRWiki talk:Main Page" does sound like the main talk page for the Homestar Runner Wiki. If "Homestar Runner Wiki" doesn't fly, I could definitely support this one. Trey56 13:41, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
I support either leaving it as Main Page or eliminating the page title a la Wikipedia. Moving the Main Page to Homestar Runner Wiki would be a bit too drastic in my opinion. — Kilroy / talk 23:46, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't think that's what they're planning to do, I think they'll just change the title a different way so the URL is still Main Page but the title displays Homestar Runner Wiki. Which, by the way, I support --Ju Ju Master 18:35, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
I must respectfully oppose any action that would move the Main page from where it is now. I too believe that the current setup is fine the way it is, and the main page content makes it quite obvious what it is that we are visiting (as if the big H*R wiki icon on the top left wasn't a big enough hint ;).) I originally thought changing the MediaWiki:Mainpage text as well, but the first line right under the title already says Homestar Runner Wiki. Finally, I am concerned (only in a very minor way) that even though it be a redirect, not all links, internal or external, would work in the same way (of course that's the paranoid in me talkin' :) ). --Stux 01:58, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Oh I just realized that the second-to-last comment before mine, was dated june 24th, so I guess this might be a closed argument, but in case it isn't, I leave my comment. Ta ta! --Stux 01:59, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
I don't understand what all this talk is even about!! There is already an Image right there that says what this place is called. Main Page tells you it's the Main Page of that. So any person who is smart knows that it's the Main Page of the Homestar Runner Wiki. This is a lot of discussion for something that really doesn't need changing. I think it's ridiculous. There's no point in it. And if you WERE going to change it, you could just change it to Homestar Runner Wiki: Main Page or H*R Wiki: Main Page. But that again, is just repeating the obvious. I say just leave it alone. --Image:Stinkwing.gif »Bleed0range« 07:51, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Dates for updates

They seem to be a month too far. was last updated in May, yet the front page claims it was updated yesterday, which was exactly one month later than it actually was.

No... It says 5-22-06. --DorianGray
(S/He means the Wiki's front page claims it was updated yesterday, Dorian. :) ) —BazookaJoe 00:32, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
You're right, the last big update was in May. But there are several smaller updates that have been happening that are not noted on the main pages. The dates of the Podstar Runner releases and Store updates are indeed accurate. —BazookaJoe 00:27, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

I really think that we should have a category for commercials. How would I go about creating one? It's not really that hard I think, but I just don't now how. Can somebody response. --Homfrog 20:07, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

You can add [[Category:Commercials]] to any page that needs it, and it's link will be red at the bottom where the rest of the categories are. You can click on the red link to type a description of the category, then continue adding [[Category:Commercials]] to any page that needs it. Hope that helps. —FireBird|Talk 20:34, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Well if you believe that we need a category called that, then create it, and the community will decide if we need it.--H*Bad 20:20, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Whenever something weird happens on the web, like things looking out-of-date, or in the wrong places, or not appearing at all, always try clearing your cache first. It's amazing the crud that can turn up in that thing. If that doesn't work, clear your cache, then restart the browser. Only if that still doesn't help should you start actually looking into what the problem might be. Wikipedia Article for Deletion

The Homestar Runner Wiki's article on Wikipedia may be deleted soon. Dang, yo. - Joshua 04:19, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm going to say right up front to anyone who is going to vote keep only because they like Homestar Runner and the Wiki, don't bother. Rather, I beg you not to. Thanks. —BazookaJoe 04:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I second that. Their deletion vote policy is a bit different than ours, as I once found out the stupid way hard way. I like ours better. But that's beside the point. I think they vote more on the article rather than the subject, and so you all should to--if at all. --DorianGray
That may be true but it annoys me that ppl would go right to AFD instead of trying to post suggestions for fixing and all that. Huff! --Stux 05:08, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Oh! And reading through the article again, it really needs serious editing to make it sound more professional. It sounds more like a story than an exposition, and I can only do so much. So if anyone can help, super! Okay, I think I'm done yapping. --Stux 05:20, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
It's making me a little upset too. They've "successfully AfD'd" Encyclopaedia Dramatica, yet are voting keep in Uncyclopedia's AfD. Also—I hate pointing fingers like this—Wookieepedia's article doesn't have any cited sources or Google News like ours. I'll decide what my final vote should be later. —BazookaJoe 12:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, and there are tons of other wiki's that have their (totally pertinent and decent) article and have not been AfD'd. For example the Meatball Wiki, Memory Alpha, etc. etc (all the ones here). I totally agree that a rewrite is necessary, summarizing some of the main points of the article, but having this deleted or otherwise shrunk to one line bothers me. How long are AfD's supposed to be active? It seems to me that this number is arbitrary even in Wikipedia: I've seen brief AfD's and long ones.
As for voting: if you're reading this, please vote, but as the forward-thinking user's template states, do so with a reason, that is just go there and state what you think and give an intelligent reason for it! Even if you hate the article. :(
Sorry, but I am starting to get irritated by the whole AfD process as I've mentioned before, it seems like a sledgehammer solution for a problem that requires pliers. What's worse it seems no one cares. As I mentioned in my wikipedia comment, my tone sounds bitter, and I apologize, but this is frustrating on both ends. --Stux 17:56, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

The result was apprently to merge & redirect. Someone got the redirect really quickly, but forgot to merge. Oh, well. I took care of that.

If you want to see the HRWiki get an article of its own, go to Wikipedia:Homestar Runner, edit the HRWiki section, add relevant material, and suggest that the article be split once it gets too large to remain in that page. ~ Laramie, Why? ~ 23:33, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

And the image for the Featured Weekly Artcile is not loading, it just looks like the code: <img src= in a light blue link Nothing else loads. The text below that messed up code in the Featured Article isn't there, and neither is the blue Strong Bad box. HELP ME! Maybe I sholud purge it? What does that mean anyways? --Homfrog 10:56, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
This is how it looked to me, but suddenly it went back to norrmal as I came to this page.

That just looks like a normal timeout to me... the browser had loaded everything up to that <img src= bit, and then decided the server was taking too long and gave up. If it keeps looking like that, clear your browser cache and try again (the browser might be caching the incomplete version of the page). phlip TC 11:15, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Database Dump?

Is a database dump offered for hrwiki? I would love to localize all of this great info. 08:34, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Not sure what you're asking, but a link here would direct interested readers to all the info on H*R they could want. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 08:41, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
No, we don't offer database dumps. If we ever did take on a localization project, we'd probably use the interlanguage feature of MediaWiki. -- Tom 13:07, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
I believe he was thinking of a local copy, not a translation. Hence the database dump. Sounds a bit questionable with respect to copyright protection. Loafing 13:28, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes, similar to what Wikipedia does here. 14:21, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Heh. Localization can mean many things. But yeah, we don't offer database dumps. -- Tom 03:46, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Easter Egg character variations

I couldn't figure out the best place to put this, and I wanted opinions of others. It seems to me that there is a running joke in many cartoons that a fairly insignificant offhand comment by one of the characters resurfaces at the end of the e-mail and/or in an easter egg as a minor character variant. I don't know whether this ought to be classified as a running gag, a subcategory of character variants, or what. Maybe people don't think it needs to be here at all.

Some examples:

Some more minor examples include:

There may be other examples I haven't thought of.
