The Brothers Chaps show off some of their early work that never made it on the website.

Transcript

{Mike and Matt Chapman are sitting in their chairs as in most of the bonus features. Matt pretends to take a drink from a water bottle (which actually still has the cap on it) and then smacks his lips.}

MATT CHAPMAN: Ahhhh...

MIKE CHAPMAN: Refreshing?

MATT CHAPMAN: Yes. You know what else is refreshing? {points toward the camera} This next bonus feature.

{Mike takes a drink from another water bottle. Then, the screen cuts to a heavily contrasted black-and-white scene. Strong Bad is walking through rain, and Homestar appears from the other side walking in the other direction. Through the rest of the feature, Mike and Matt narrate.}

MATT CHAPMAN: What's this style, Mike?

MIKE CHAPMAN: It's a little black-and-white, uh, film noir style.

MATT CHAPMAN: Dad—our dad would like that.

{Cut to a closeup of Homestar and Strong Bad.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: Yeah. High contrast, rain... I think that's all you need, right?

{Cut to a scene of Homestar running in the rain, still in "film noir" style.}

MATT CHAPMAN: Yeah. The streets of Vienna.

MIKE CHAPMAN: {snickering} Oh.

MATT CHAPMAN: Perhaps?

MIKE CHAPMAN: A Thin Man?

{Cut to a scene where Homestar, Strong Bad, and Strong Mad are again walking toward the center of the screen. Now, the style is much brighter, with solid colors and no outlines.}

MATT CHAPMAN: The Third Man?

MIKE CHAPMAN: {laughing} The Third Man.

MATT CHAPMAN: What's that style? It's the Crunchberries movie style.

{Cut to a scene of all the main characters except Homsar in the "Crunchberries" style.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: Yeah. Flat, kinda cartoony.

{Cut to a scene of Homestar running across The Field in the same style.}

MATT CHAPMAN: Uh, really. More than before?

{Cut to a scene of seven characters on a roller coaster, still in the flat cartoony style. Homestar and Marzipan are in the first car, Pom Pom is alone in the second car, Strong Bad and The Poopsmith are in the third car, and Strong Sad and Coach Z are in the last.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: Uh, that's not the right word.

MATT CHAPMAN: Uh, now what's this?

{Cut back a bit to show that the roller coaster is in the shape of the word "bubs".}

MIKE CHAPMAN: This is the Bubs roller coaster! You know that!

MATT CHAPMAN: Wow. What are they doing on there, Mike?

MIKE CHAPMAN: They're going, like...

{Cut to a closeup of the roller coaster. They go over a hill.}

MATT and MIKE CHAPMAN: {as if they're on the roller coaster; Matt imitates several characters in the process} Aaaaaaaaaaaah! Ooooooooh! Whooooooa! Hey!

{Cut to another roller coaster scene.}

MATT CHAPMAN: {as Strong Bad} Coca-cola.

{Cut to a scene that looks like an Etch-a-Sketch, with Homestar walking across it.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: Here's a little Etch-a-Sketch action.

{Homestar reaches the edge of the Etch-a-Sketch, walks off of it, and reappears on the other side.}

MATT CHAPMAN: What were you gonna do with this, Mike?

MIKE CHAPMAN: Well, you know, I was just messin' around. I used to enjoy just... doin' stuff. {laughs} Not so much any more.

MATT CHAPMAN: You don't enjoy it any more, do you?

MIKE CHAPMAN: No. I don't experiment with different graphical styles like I used to.

{Cut to a needlepoint picture of Strong Bad, where Homestar walks up and moves his lips as though speaking.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: ... A little needlepoint action...

MATT CHAPMAN: I like that a lot. What—

MIKE CHAPMAN: This came in the, uh...

{Cut to The Field, which looks normal, but a crude Homestar made out of LEGO bricks walks on.}

MATT CHAPMAN: What's that texture in the background? Was that a paper towel? {Imitating a robotic walking noise} Eee! Oh!

MIKE CHAPMAN: {Imitating the same noise} Eee! Oh! Eee! Oh!

MATT CHAPMAN: {as Homestar} I am walk around block!

{Cut to Strong Sad at a slide projector. Homestar, Marzipan, and Coach Z are seated in front of him, watching it. A digital readout that says "9:25" is on the slide.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: Here's a vacation slide show of Strong Sad's that we never did.

{The slide switches to Litigation Jackson.}

MATT CHAPMAN: What do you—there, that looks like Litigation Jackson!

MIKE CHAPMAN: Yeah, and a gorilla...

{As he says this, the slide switches to a gorilla.}

MATT CHAPMAN: {as Strong Sad} Oh, he had a high forehead.

{The slide switches to a Thanksgiving feast, where Perry of Limozeen is standing nearby.}

MATT CHAPMAN: {still as Strong Sad} And there's a paper turkey head on that pineapple.

{Another switch, to another scene of Litigation Jackson.}

MATT CHAPMAN: These are some crazy photos, Mike.

{Another switch, to a digital readout of "9:26".}

MIKE CHAPMAN: And now it's nine twenty-six.

MATT CHAPMAN: Time to go.

Easter Eggs

• The dialogue can be heard in a bad British accent by switching your DVD player's audio language selection while watching.

{The opening with Matt and Mike is identical to the normal version. Over the film noir scene...}

MATT CHAPMAN: All right, what've we got here, Mike?

MIKE CHAPMAN: Well, we've got a little black-and-white action on this one, uh, film nwaaa, I believe the Frenchies, the frikkin' Frenchies call it.

MATT CHAPMAN: Right, right. It looks real nice. It got harsh...

MIKE CHAPMAN: Running...

MATT CHAPMAN: ... Harsh shadows, there.

MIKE CHAPMAN: High contrast.

{The flat cartoony style begins.}

MATT CHAPMAN: Right.

MIKE CHAPMAN: We've got, uh... some berries... have grown... on the trees.

MATT CHAPMAN: Field's gone stripey, it looks like a watermelon.

MIKE CHAPMAN: It's been mowed. Freshly mowed.

MATT CHAPMAN: The whole thing...

MIKE CHAPMAN: Freshly mown.

MATT CHAPMAN: Oh, the gra—

MIKE CHAPMAN: Mowed or mown?

MATT CHAPMAN: ... the grass.

MIKE CHAPMAN: And we've got a little roller-coaster action, like at, uh, cri-cri-cri-cri-critty park.

MATT CHAPMAN: Oh right! Critty—

MIKE CHAPMAN: We call 'em critty parks here on my patch of the pond.

MATT CHAPMAN: Critty— {laughs} Ah, 'sright?

MIKE CHAPMAN: Aaaaaaah! Blimeeeeeeey! Aaah, crikey!

MATT CHAPMAN: They must be, uh...

{The Etch-a-Sketch scene starts.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: This is a teletron. Ah, it's a little baby techa-teletron! Nah, it's an Etch-a-Sketch. They call 'em, uh, Higher-Arts-a-Sketch...

MATT CHAPMAN: Really. I don't know. I don't know if that's true.

{The needlepoint scene begins.}

MIKE CHAPMAN: It's true. Ah, it's like me mum used to knit in the...

MATT CHAPMAN: Ah, needlepoint!

MIKE CHAPMAN: A stich-a-ma-coo-roo!

MATT CHAPMAN: Back when we lived in...

MIKE CHAPMAN: Stitch-a-ma-roo!

{LEGO Homestar appears.}

MATT CHAPMAN: Uh, (?)!

MIKE CHAPMAN: {imitating a robotic noise as in the regular audio} Dang! Gron! Dang! Gron!

MATT CHAPMAN: Oh, now that's... that bloke...

MIKE CHAPMAN: Look at that bloody bloke!

{The slide show scene begins.}

MATT CHAPMAN: Ah, look, he's been on holiday!

MIKE CHAPMAN: Oh! Uh, what did he do on holiday? It's like we looked at an alarm clock!

MATT CHAPMAN: Yeah, it's some type of digital mobile.

MIKE CHAPMAN: Yeah, who's that— who's that fella—

MATT CHAPMAN: Call— hey, call me on my mobile, why don't you?

MIKE CHAPMAN: Look at this! What is that celebration they've got there with turkeys and... fruit...?

MATT CHAPMAN: Ah, it's Thanksgiving, they call it.

MIKE CHAPMAN: Thanks... what are they giving thanks for?

MATT CHAPMAN: Oh, thanks for nothing.

Fun Facts

Explanations

• Film noir is a film style often used in low budget detective movies in immediate post-World War II era. A famous example is The Third Man starring Orson Welles.

Goofs

• In the next-to-last scene with the roller coaster, the coaster is simply flipped left-to-right, so everyone who was sitting on the left side of the roller coaster is suddenly sitting on the right and vice-versa.

• Coca-Cola is the #1 sold soda in the United States of America and is known for its high-caffeine content.
• Etch-A-Sketch is a popular children's toy featuring a glass screen on which pictures can be "drawn" using two plastic knobs.
• "Crunch Berries" is a cereal containing pieces shaped and flavored like berries, famously advertised in the '70s and '80s with brightly-colored cartoon commercial spots. It is a branch of the Cap'n Crunch cereal brand.
• The Thin Man is a famous detective novel by Dashiell Hammett and became a series of movies in the 1930s.
