Transcript

{Wind is heard blowing through a dimly-lit Flash 5 interface. An image of Strong Bad's arm is visible in the Library panel. A hidden door opens, and Strong Bad peeks his head through. He jumps out and closes the door as the scene brightens.}

STRONG BAD: {shaking his arms in the air} Surprise!! Happy birthday, Flash 5! {lowers his arms} And to a lesser extent 6, 7, and 8! {looks up} Oh, Flash 5, we've been through it all together. {looks down} Except... when I needed to embed video.

{Cut to a medium shot of Strong Bad.}

STRONG BAD: {looking around} Where's the Align panel, where's the Align panel?! {points toward the Align panel} Align panel, get over here, get over here, you little scuppernong!

{Align panel makes the Homsar walking sound effect as it wobbles its way over to Strong Bad. He puts his hand on the Align panel and leans onto it.}

STRONG BAD: Align panel, do you remember that time when you and I were—

{Strong Bad's mask, head, mouth, body, gloves, and feet are moved to the left side of the screen.}

STRONG BAD: Ohh!! That's what I'm talking about! Align left edge! Now space me out all equally, to the stage, to the stage!

{Cut to a wide shot. Strong Bad's mask, head, mouth, body, gloves, and feet are spread out equally on the work space.}

STRONG BAD: I like it, I like it!

{Strong Bad realigns back together. The Frame Actions panel pops up in front of him.}

STRONG BAD: {leaning to the side of the panel} Oh, man! Who invited those pretentious guys? Shouldn't you be at a developer conference somewheres?

{The Frame Actions panel bounces a few times, then makes the Homsar walking noise as it wobbles offscreen to the right.}

STRONG BAD: Yeah, say hi to tellTarget for me.

{Cut to a medium shot.}

STRONG BAD: All right, Flash 5. I got you a little something...

{Record-scratching noise. Cut to a wide shot showing Homestar on the left with a sign around his neck reading "pwesent?"}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Happy Days reunion, Photoshop!

STRONG BAD: {points at Homestar} That is not what I got you. Huya! {turns and "hits" Homestar from afar, with the accompanying sound effect}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {transforms into a box in wrapping} Ooh, shape tween.

{Cut to the box. Strong Bad pops out of it as the background turns blue.}

STRONG BAD: HAPPY FREAKIN' FLASHDAY!!

{The top of the box floats back down onto Strong Bad's head. "HAPPY FLASHDAY!!" is written above in white text, "from homestarrunner.com" below. The toon loops.}

Fun Facts

Explanations

  • "Except for when I needed to embed video" is a reference to Flash 5's lack of Flash Video support.
  • The first versions of Adobe Flash, then called FutureSplash Animator, were released in April 1996.
  • A scuppernong is a large type of muscadine, a grape native to the Southeastern United States, home of the Brothers Chaps.
  • In Flash 3 and Flash 4, the tellTarget() global function was the primary means of controlling one movie clip from another. It was used to invoke functions such as play(), stop(), and gotoAndStop() on remote movie clips. It was deprecated in Flash 5 in favor of object-oriented syntax or the with statement.

Remarks

  • The title for this toon is "Flash's 10th Birthday" on the DVD cover, but is written as "Flash 10th Birthday" on the DVD menu.

Inside References

Real World References

  • Happy Days is an sitcom that ran from 1974 to 1984 and depicted a sweet vision of life in the mid-1950s to mid-1960s. The show had two reunion specials, in 1992 and 2005.
  • Photoshop is another product of Adobe.

Fast Forward

DVD Version

  • A disclaimer is displayed at the beginning, reading:
In 2006, Flash celebrated its
10th birthday. We made this
toon for the folks at Adobe to
show at their big birthday
celebration. We barely got it to
them in time. Originally, the last
few lines of dialog were recorded
in a bathroom in Brooklyn with
a system microphone and a towel
over Matt's head.
  • The animation does not loop at the end.
