Arrested Development is a sitcom following the dysfunctional formerly-wealthy Bluth family. Edited in a documentary-influenced style, with writing that combined satire, running gags, interwoven storylines, a large cast of characters, and absurdist humor, the show was highly acclaimed and influential despite generally low viewership.
Matt Chapman praised the humor and originality of the show in a 2005 interview with Giant magazine.
[edit] Appearances
- Strong Sad's Lament — The August 17, 2005 tagline was "We're just blowing through naptime", a line spoken by the childlike Buster Bluth in the episode "Bringing Up Buster".
- Halloween Potion-ma-jig — Bubs' line "Baby, you got a witch's brew goin'!" refers to "Baby, you've got a stew going!", a quote from Carl Weathers. The actor portrayed a fictionalized version of himself on Arrested Development, where he behaved as an extreme cheapskate – including saving leftovers from a party to make into a stew later. Bubs dressed as Apollo Creed, one of Weathers' most famous roles, from the Rocky series.
- Lookin at a Thing in a Bag (DVD Commentary) — Ryan Sterritt and Matt quote lines from the juice-obsessed Buster in response to the drinks Homestar Runner gets from Bubs.
- Email magic trick (DVD Commentary) — Strong Bad's magic is compared to that of Gob Bluth, a poorly-skilled magician who uses over-the-top theatrics and expensive props in ill-fated attempts to pull off impressive "illusions".
- Cheat Commandos: Two Part Episode: Part 1 — Reynold's Brother is "Mr. Manager" at Jaded Teen Pizza, referencing a gag where a newly-promoted George Michael is confused if he should be called "Mr. Manager" or just "manager" of the family banana stand.
- I Killed Pom Pom — Homestar dresses up as Tobias Fünke. His costume includes the cutoff jeans Tobias uses to manage his "never-nude" condition. The blue body paint was worn by Tobias during his stint as an understudy for the Blue Man Group; Homestar leaves a blue handprint similar to the ones Tobias would leave around the family home, despite his lack of hands.
- Mario Paint Thursdays — A page of "Stew Homework" asks "When is it appropriate to use the phrase, 'Baby, you got a stew going?'"
