"OW! my browser!"
This article is about the homestarrunner.com's previous 404 page. For the fake error pages in the Homestar Runner universe, see Fake Error Pages.

For most of homestarrunner.com's existence, 404'd was the Teen Girl Squad-themed error page that would come up when one typed in a file name that did not exist in the homestarrunner.com domain. It was eventually replaced with the Neon 404'd page.

Were you just making up names of files or what?

day, but come on! it's like you're not even trying.

in closing, go away.

{The Ugly One is being impaled by arrows coming from the Arrow'd Guy's mouth. Her speech balloon reads "OW! my browser!"}

Fun Facts

Remarks

  • There are nine arrows sticking into The Ugly One from behind, but twelve heads are visible coming out of her front.

Goofs

  • If you got a 404 error while in a different directory from the root directory (e.g. www.homestarrunner.com/stinkogame/), the Flash files for 404'd and the navigation bar would not load. This was due to relative linking. That means, since the 404 page called on the file "404error.swf", the page would look for "404error.swf" in that folder, and since the files don't exist in that folder, it would not load. Since the page is using just the file name, it is assumed that the file is in the same folder as the page linking to it. An easy solution to this is pointing the error's Flash file URL to "http://www.homestarrunner.com/404error.swf", and the navigation bar to "http://www.homestarrunner.com/main_nav.swf" instead of plainly "404error.swf" and "main_nav.swf", respectively.

Fixed Glitches

  • Sometimes, for unknown reasons, a 404 error wouldn't bring up this page, bringing up the stock IIS 404 error message instead.
  • Accessing 404.shtml, the common file name for a 404 page by most web servers, would give an HTTP error of 403 (File Forbidden) returned by IIS, due the risk of running an executable on the server.

Inside References

  • The image on the right of the message is a modified version of a shot from both comic and Teen Girl Squad Issue 1, in which The Ugly One is arrowed.

Fast Forward

  • In the Stinkomanual, the end boss of Level 3 has a quote, "Stlunko need a reason to live.", attributed to "Stlunko, 404".
