'''DaVinci's Notebook''' (DVN) is an a cappella singing group consisting of Bernie Muller-Thym, Greg "Storm" DiCostanzo, Paul Sabourin, and Richard Hsu. Two members of the group, Paul and Storm, performed [[Ballad of The Sneak]]. The song is available on a CD entitled "Paul and Storm: Shame and Cookie Dough."

The group was formed in Virginia in 1994 and has [http://www.davincisnotebook.com/pastperf.asp performed] at stages and festivals across the country. For [http://web.archive.org/web/20060208055324/http://www.davincisnotebook.com/history.asp#openletter personal reasons], DaVinci's Notebook is no longer touring. However, Paul and Storm are currently touring with [[Wikipedia:Jonathan Coulton|Jonathan Coulton]].

==The Making of [[Ballad of The Sneak]]==

DVN discovered [[Homestar Runner (Flash cartoon)|the site]] through a link on Memepool.com ([http://memepool.com/Date/165/ listed on July 4, 2001]). Almost immediately, the band became Homestar Runner fans. According to Greg "Storm" DiCostanzo, this was well before [[The Brothers Chaps]] started doing the [[Strong Bad Email|Strong Bad Emails]]. They have been fans of The Brothers Chaps since. According to Storm, the subject of which band member actually brought Homestar Runner to the band's attention first, is a subject of debate amongst the group.

Storm states that Paul more or less stalked the Brothers Chaps because DVN thought the Brothers Chaps were utterly hysterical, and because Paul had a talent for getting in touch with interesting people. Paul wrote that he "used his mad Interwebs stalking skills and a phone book...and it was early enough in their career that they were more flattered than creeped out when I tracked them down." They eventually convinced them to come see one of DVN's gigs when they came to [[wikipedia:Atlanta, Georgia|their town]], and a friendship was born.

The Brothers Chaps at one point said they'd love DVN to contribute a song. Later, the Brother's Chaps specifically asked DVN to write an [[Old-Timey]] themed song for [[The Sneak]].
Aside from describing it as ''Old-Timey'' and being about the Old-Timey version of [[The Cheat]], the Brothers Chaps just let DVN do their thing.

Paul and Storm passed lyrics back and forth (over email, mostly). The song was ''very'' loosely based on [[The Skate Party]]'s [[The Cheat Theme Song]]. It was recorded at Paul's house, and the vocals are mostly Paul. Storm recalls that they wrapped it up pretty quickly, though they worked on it in between a lot of DVN projects and tours over a month. The actual work time was a handful of hours. Paul added that the many random sound effects were put in the song mainly to see what they would end up doing with them.

Paul noted that the chronological inconsistencies (references to Tammany Hall, the Hully Gully, the Kaiser, prohibition, etc.) were, for the most part, intentional; partly to keep with the overall feel the Brother Chaps had established with the toon. The goal was to contribute to the overall Old-timeness and partly to see if people would point them out.

Storm recalls being very excited to see how the song would be interpereted by The Brothers Chaps. They wondered if ''Ballad of the Sneak'' would match what they had in their heads (It pretty much did). About a month from when DVN sent the completed song to The Brothers Chaps, ''Ballad of the Sneak'' toon appeared on the Homestar Runner site.

Here's an interesting tidbit:

::I think that's meant to be a perspective view ''through'' the floor, with the joists running parallel to the camera angle. The lighter framing is the ends of the joists and of the planking, which face us. The "darker wood" is the sides of the joists and tops of the lower planking which recede away from us. :I was pretty young, but I seem to remember that when I was living in Arkansas during its sesquicentennial, it would sometimes be hastily pronounced that way, particularly by those with more pronounced Arkansan accents (which is related to a Georgia accent). But Strong Sad's not the type to hastily pronounce anything (except [[origins#Real-World References|Moleskine]]), so that's probably not relevant. == Drawings and Eyes ==

There appears to be some disagreement (based on the edit history) of whether [[Coach Z]] and [[Homestar Runner]] should be included. I personally think no... A drawing of a person doesn't count as an appearance of them. Perhaps some consensus should be reached here so that people don't edit it back and forth.

Also, does that pear actually have [[Googly-eyed Objects|Googly Eyes]]? If so, the transcript should say so, IMHO. If not, it's not a reference. I think it does, but again, don't want it to be edited back out again.

:Let's examine the googly-eye question logically, shall we? First of all, Strong Sad literally calls it "a pear covered with eyeballs". That description is not quite compatible with a pear covered with stuck-on googly eyes. However, the prop itself could be simply that, so it still doesn't rule it out. Thus we have to examine the picture and deduce what we can from the visual evidence. And the visual evidence consists of two important bits. First, that the pupils of the eyes are not all pointing in the same direction. And second, that there are no markings on the drawing, as there would generally be on a well-done storyboard, indicating motion of the pear. A pear covered with googly eyes that is not in motion will have all the pupils pointing downwards, thus this cannot be intended to be a drawing of such an object. Since it's not what Strong Sad said, and it's not what Strong Sad drew, it would be a huge leap to call these googly eyes. The pear with eyes reminds me of a 30's film, I think it was French, where random objects had eyes...and the main character held up an object covered with eyes...most likely from the surrealist school. I think it might have been ''The Blood of a Poet'', but I'm not sure...it's been a while since I saw it and it's not the easiest film to get a hold of. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

What's more sensible to accept, really? That these are affixed eyes, or the pear grew them? We're talking STRONG BAD, the guy who wipes permanent marker off the Polaroid and calls it high tech. If he were to use the storyboards, he's gonna use googly eyes. No question.

Nevertheless, the whole question of googly eyes really comes down to one thing. This is a ''drawing'' made by Strong Sad, not a photo, model, or completed film. And that's all it will ever be. He didn't say anything about googly eyes, and he didn't include anything in the drawing to indicate they were googly eyes.
