== Auto Log Out? ==

I occasionally am logged out for no reason when I don't click the "log out" button. Do we have an automatic log out or something, or is there some glitch in the server? [[User:DrPepper42|DrPepper42]] 19:31, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
:Maybe your cookies expired. Happens to me on occasion. --[[User:DorianGray|DorianGray]] 19:38, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
::Maybe. I didn't know that could happen. Which isn't that unusual. Thanks! {{User: DrPepper42/sig}} 21:14, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
:::I find there's an inevitable period of time when I come onto the wiki and I am not automatically logged in. Happens. Log in again, be sure to to check the "always keep me logged in" and go. A few times a year ain't a problem. {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 23:45, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
::::I'm talking about moving from page to page on the wiki. I don't use "always stay logged in" because I've got a little brother who will probably get me banned. {{User:DrPepper42/sig}} 00:27, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
:::::It might be that you're moving between <span class="plainlinks">[http://hrwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page hrwiki.org] and [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page www.hrwiki.org]</span>, which even though they are the same thing are treated differently by your computer. To avoid the problem, I log in on both. &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 03:07, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
::::::I'd consider that a glitch in the server. {{User:DrPepper42/sig}} 18:22, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
:::::::Without going into too much horrible detail: {{pl|l=http://hrwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page hrwiki.org}} and {{pl|l=http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page www.hrwiki.org}} are considered by your browser to be two different sites for technical reasons. This is not a trivial thing to fix. Similarly, the cookies do not translate from one site to the next for ''security'' reasons. So, no glitch, just something you gotta keep your eye on. --[[User:Stux|Stux]] 02:08, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
::::::::Given that this is a pretty low security site (no personal info, etc.), you could just set the cookie with a domain of .hrwiki.org --[[User:Tabacco|Tabacco]] 15:04, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
== Background Image ==

Okay, some questions about the greyscale field background:<BR>
#Where is the actual file located?<BR>
#Is there any interest in replacing it with the most up-to-date field/sky that TBC have been using?
#*If so, is there any interest in manipulating it to be a "tiling" background so that it would be seamless for use on any resolution?
#*If not, can we resize the existing one so that it's at least 1280 pixels wide? (1440 pixels wide would be my preference, actually)
Yes, most articles are large enough that the background is almost never seen, but for "young" talk pages it'd be nice for the background to get ''some'' pleasing visibility. IMHO. {{User:OptimisticFool/sig}} 07:46, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
:It's at [http://www.hrwiki.org/skins/monobook/headbg-kb.jpg www.hrwiki.org/skins/monobook/headbg-kb.jpg], 1250 pixels wide and 24kB large. My screen is 1680 pixels wide, and I don't think I noticed the [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=HRWiki:Sandbox&oldid=571751 awkward tiling] until now. I don't think we should make the image wider. It will increase the file size, and who knows when the next user comes with an even wider screen. But yeah, a version that repeats seamlessly ''would'' look better and might even reduce the file size. Having said that, I don't think it's too important to change, either ;-){{User:Loafing/sig}} 10:50, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
::Also, the image right now is 523 pixels in height. I don't think many HRWiki'ers use 800x600, so its height could be increased too, by adding to the sky... and there's plenty of sky to work with. That would make the field visible on the screen for longer. And having an increased-size jpeg can't be ''that'' much bigger. But unlike any given article image, I guess it is a file that's loaded by thousands more people so maybe that little increase could be a big deal. Anyway, a tiled background wouldn't be entirely authentic to TBC's work but could still make sense. And yes, I know it's not too important to change it, but I'm always [[User:OptimisticFool#WANTED|asking]] for a challenge (of the image variety). I'm going to play around with it for a bit. {{User:OptimisticFool/sig}} 17:02, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
:::Hey! I use 800x600, and I like it! Well, that's when I'm on my computer. No idea what the resolution is on my TV when I'm on my Wii. {{User:Superfield Credit Union/sig}}
:::::Are you [[Dislike of Old People|60+]] or do you just have bad eyesight? =] {{User:OptimisticFool/sig}} 18:53, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
::::I'm pretty sure the Wii's Internet Channel emulates an 800x600 screen as well. As for the tiling background issue, it definitely would look better if it were either widened or changed so that the tiling is seamless, though I don't think it's too important to change, as there aren't many pages on the wiki where we end up seeing the entire background image. {{User:Kilroy/sig}} 18:07, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
:::::The Widescreen setting on the Wii makes the resolution something else. Though my laptop is Hi-Definition. (which is wide) {{User:DrPepper42/sig}} 18:13, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
::::::For your information, I prefer not to have everything on my screen about the size of a grain of sand, and I have excellent eyesight. And I do set my Wii to widescreen. {{User:Superfield Credit Union/sig}}
:::::::''{kills colons}'' What does having grain of sand stuff have to do with anything? Hi-Def leaves stuff the same size, but with a better resolution. {{User:DrPepper42/sig}} 20:18, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
::::::::''{adds another colon anyway :D}'' Actually when you set the Wii to widescreen mode, the screen width stays at 800, but the height is changed to something else.. I think it lowers it to around 450 or something. Oh, and I have my Wii set to widescreen mode and text is, for the most part, readable to me. Though whenever I use the Internet Channel on a standard-def TV, the text definitely is grain-of-sand sized. :S {{User:Kilroy/sig}} 20:39, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
:::::::::''{kills the new colon}'' Oh. I thought he was talking about Hi-Def laptop screens. {{unsigned|DrPepper42|20:42, 21 June 2008}}
::As you can see from my awesome colon indentation, I was not replying directly to your post but was rather commenting on this discussion in general.{{User:Loafing/sig}} 00:23, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
[[Image:Field.png|thumb|Fit to be tiled]]
Here's [[:Image:Field.png|the tile]] and [http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/2048/fieldtiledtr0.png this is what it looks like tiled]. :::Awesome job, OptimisticFool! {{User:Kilroy/sig}} 19:46, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the support so far, juys. Now here's what I suggest: Replace [http://www.hrwiki.org/skins/monobook/headbg-kb.jpg this 23.5k jpeg] with [http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1783/fieldgreyxd2.png this 11.2k png], thus turning [http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3047/fullbeforeiu5.png this] into [http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7641/fullafterpl8.png this]. I added some extra cloudless space at the top of the greyscaled image since it will always be completely covered up. <small>(There are two exceptions (that I can think of) to this: (1) someone blanks a page completely, and (2) a <nowiki><pre></nowiki> goes long, [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=HRWiki:Sandbox&oldid=571744 like this] (hint: scroll right).)</small> So, yeah, the extra space allows the background to be visible for longer. Any other suggestions? {{User:OptimisticFool/sig}} 07:38, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
:So, umm.. is this being considered? {{User:OptimisticFool/sig}} 21:19, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
== Accepted Spelling ==

I think the wiki ought to be consistent in its spelling. Recently the spelling of [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Weclome_Back&diff=prev&oldid=573690 donut/doughnut] reminded me of this. Another one is [[Talk:bedtime story#Gummi vs. Gummy|gummi/gummy]]. Has the broad subject of consistency in spelling been brought up before? I think it kind of goes in the category of flavor/flavour, as well. Another one that comes to mind is y'all/ya'll. So, do we or should we have a page to list our "decisions" regarding spelling, with its accompanying talk page available to reach a consensus for each of these and others? {{User:OptimisticFool/sig}} 23:02, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
:Such things would probably go under [[HRWiki:Manual of Style#Spelling]]. &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 23:32, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
::As a general rule, we spell it like TBC do. If they have not spelled it out, or they have been inconsistent (and we always agree with their spelling in related situations) then we generally use the most accepted spelling based on what evidence we can collect. "Doughnut", IMO, trumps "donut" which is clearly a shortened, slang form. "Y'all" is the correct form; however, we use "ya'll" when TBC do. And obviously American spellings are used over British. {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 23:37, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
:::I don't agree with you on the spelling of donut.. =] ..but my purpose in bringing this up here was not to gain consensus, but rather to find out where I ought to take these questions of spelling. Since [[HRWiki:Manual of Style#Spelling]] is where the topic is addressed, I'll take it to the talk page of that article. {{User:OptimisticFool/sig}} 00:05, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
== Timeline/Historical Dates for homestarrunner.com ==

As someone interested in reconstructing the history of how the Bros Chaps developed the Homestar universe and website, I would really like to see a feature on the wiki that would list all the content according to the date when it was first added to the Homestar website.

Most articles do currently feature dates, but to my knowledge there's no page where the cartoons and other material on the Homestar website are listed by date.
== Search Engine Addition In Firefox ==

Firefox cuts off the search engine name, and labels it as '''Homestar Runner Wiki (En''' is there any discussion or whatnot to have the name of the wiki shortened so that it fits? Because it's annoying to see that I can still add '''Homestar Runner Wiki (English)''' to the search engines list (The search box also says a new search engine can be added even though I've already added this engine.) You can always bring it up over at Mozilla.com's bugzilla or something, but I'm sure the bug will immediately be marked as invalid. I'm also sure they'll mark it as an invalid enhancement, and state that "The website can shorten its name, there's NO reason why it isn't possible for them to shorten that name."

For instance, Why not use HRWiki as a name? {{User:Iyeru/sig}}
:I don't get why it should annoy you. That being said, there's no reason for the wiki to shorten its title to something less descriptive just so you can have the full name in your search bar. If you care so much, download the source code to firefox and change the code yourself. As for the "Add Homestar Runner Wiki (English)" still being there, that happens with all search engines. Go to any site that you already have on that list, it will do the same thing. Basically, none of what you said has anything to do with us. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 23:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
::[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qX8bZASFNA I have to disagree] with the very last statement there. I'll make it harder for you to see (with this youtube video) since you apparently haven't seen it yourself. {{User:Iyeru/sig}}
:::Fine, you're apparently right. It doesn't happen on other sites. It's still a result of something that has nothing to do with us. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 02:08, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
::::I'll admit I'm at a loss to understand what the issue is. Can someone summarize in small words, please? {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 02:11, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
::::(edit conflict) <strike>The "Add Homestar Runner Wiki" thing at the bottom is there because Firefox is detecting a search box on the current page. For example, go to any random page that has a search box on it, (say, https://addons.mozilla.org/) Check that drop-down and you'll see what I mean.</strike> (Post edit conflict note: the other issue is aethetic, the name for the wiki is wider than the space Firefox displays it in). {{User:GreenHelmet/sig}} 02:14, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
:::::Ignore the first part, I see the problem now. I'm guessing that because the truncated string doesn't match the full string, Firefox doesn't properly detect that you've ''already'' added the search. {{User:GreenHelmet/sig}} 02:17, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
::::::Qermaq, it's an issue that the firefox search bar only allows names of up to 24 characters. He's suggesting that the wiki shorten its name so it fits, inconveniencing others but fixing his minor annoyance. GreenGuy, no, he's saying it's there even though he's added it already. He's right, this bug in FF causes this as well, but it's a FF problem, and i don't see any reason for the wiki to change to suit one person with one glitchy program. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 02:17, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
:::::::I see the issue. It's not an issue. It's just a bug in FF3 and will likely be corrected down the road. I fail to see the negative consequence of this behavior, though. You can select "'''Homestar Runner Wiki (En'''" and type in, as I did, "sbemail50" and it works. {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 02:22, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
::::::::I can see how it would be a minor annoyance, but seriously... {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 02:25, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
:::::::::I see now. Anyway, yeah I'd say just deal with it (24 is a very small limit to impose, I wouldn't be surprised if the mozzerella coders increase that in future releases). {{User:GreenHelmet/sig}} 02:42, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
:All that at this time is confirmed and publicly available is that the forum moderator ramrod pulled a prank that was taken by the admin team as a sign that his account had been hacked. --{{User:Super Martyo Brother/sig}} 06:20, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
::Lemme clear up a few things. I'm probably not even supposed to say half of this, but since no one else will...
:::1) Ramrod did pull a prank, but it ws well-known what was going on between all of the active mod team. He was eventually de-admined due to a misunderstanding. - the "senior admins", Stu, Dot Com and Tom, assumed his account had been hacked and removed him in haste.
:::2) The uproar among users caused by his removal from the administration was a large reason as to why the forum was locked. Dot Com, Stu, and/or Tom put it into read-only mode so that all angered suers would calm down.
:::3) Stu resigned from his place as an admin a few days after the forum was locked.
:::4) The H*R themed boards are planned to re-open. The Off-Subject boards will not, and will remain locked as an archive.
:::5) We moderators have no idea as to why the forum is still locked, as I am fairly certain everything that needed to be sorted out was done so long ago. Dot Com has not responded to any of our recent questions, nor has he said when the forum is planned to re-open.
::Hope that answers a few of your questions - Ju Ju Master.
:::I have no inside knowledge here, but let me make a suggestion. CHILL. If the forums reopen too soon, there will be a fountain of drama. No one worth considering wants that. So it may take a while for things to simmer. Be patient. A watched pot never boils. Ignore it, and when you least expect it all will be right. {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 08:12, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
::::Too soon? It's been three weeks. I've been a mod there for a year, no event0based drama lasts more than 24 hours after the event. And you can't supress stuff like that. It'll end up somewhere, no matter how long you wait. Besides, anyone who could potentially cause drama has moved to a whole new forum. - Ju Ju Master
:::Qermaq: I do not believe that telling Ju Ju to chill was warranted. Many of the "regular" users on the HRWF--users that have been there for years, and chose to visit both the Homestar and Off Subject sections of the place--were stirred up when this conflict came up, and since many of the Wiki users posting in this discussion section do not seem to understand the situation too well, Ju Ju chose to inform everybody about what exactly went down. I have to agree with him: three weeks is definitely enough of a cool-down time, especially since the Off Subject sections have been known to be permanently locked since nearly the beginning of this issue.
:::It is obvious that the HRWF will never be the same, and it is obvious that many of the regular users to the HRWF are now happier with a better system over at a new message board, and will definitely not go back to the place. Personally, with this change now solidified, I am happy that we have gone our separate ways; the HRWF as just a discussion board for Homestar Runner has never been done before, and I am sure that it will grow in its own way, as our other board grows in its own. - DS_Kid

"4) The H*R themed boards are planned to re-open. The Off-Subject boards will not, and will remain locked as an archive." D: *Leaves* {{User:16 BIT MARIO1/sig}} 21:34, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
::Dot Com: That's good to hear. Please do it soon, or if it will take longer, at least explain why. I don't even plan to return and I'm agitated over this, I'm sure your active users are even moreso. - Ju Ju Master
Maybe our admins (and other users) should get designing more skins. anyone who has an account on [http://super-smash-bros.wikia.com/wiki/ SmashWiki] will know why I am saying this. there are only two that I like. Many users are probably in the same boat. Seriously, we need some more skins. {{User:DrPepper42/sig}} 00:27, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
:What skins are enabled is a developer decision, so it doesn't rest with me. Still, I can't see why we need more skins, especially when the developers have many more pressing matters to attend to.
