:My, Nikolce, what interesting questions you have.

:#I don't like the new Simpsons episodes. I haven't liked them since about the time Maude died and Barney got sober, around six years ago. When the show first aired, the episodes had a completely different feel. The plots were more straightforward, a lot of the humor was biting and satirical, and the characters had heart and soul. One of my favorite episodes (<span class="plainlinks">#7F19</span>) is when Lisa's teacher thinks she has Lyme disease and a substitute teaches her class. I found it to be so moving that nearly fifteen years later, as I type this, I still get a little misty-eyed. Nowadays, however, the plots jump all over the place (if there even is a plot to speak of), and it's unusual for story elements introduced in the first act to figure into the last act at all. The humor has lost its edge and is more wacky and non-sequitur (like a bad imitation of Family Guy) or just plain stupid. They seem to have run out of ideas and just rehash the same tired, unfunny running gags. The characters, which used to be more well-rounded, are one-dimensional shells of their former selves. I guess somewhere along the line the writers realized you can't have real character growth if your cast never ages. What saddens me most is that younger viewers, some of whom weren't even born during the early years, think that what they're churning out now is as good as it's ever been, and that's just not so. *sigh*
-
4.do you know a user by the name of elvis?
+
:#Yes, I like Matt Groening's other main creation, Futurama. Being set in the future and largely in space means they can get away with more, and overall I appreciate at as a silly diversion kind of show. I'm not an avid fan or anything, but if I happen to catch an episode here or there on Cartoon Network, then I'll watch.
-

+
:#Well, besides work, getting ready for Christmas, and working on the wiki, I'd say not much.
-
5.did you have a bulling problem in school?
+
:#No, I've never heard of a user by that name before today.
-

+
:#Heh, do you mean was I a bully, or was I bullied by other kids? Either way, the answer is no, not really. Not more than normal kid stuff. What makes you ask?

How to add images

Here's a quick rundown of how to add images:

  1. If you haven't already, read the image use policy. Note that the PNG format is preferred.
  2. Over in the toolbox on the left, click Upload file.
  3. (A) Browse to the file on your computer.
    (B) Write a brief description in the summary area.
    (C) Click the copyright checkbox.
    (D) Click "Upload file".
  4. Place code on your page in the following format, usually at the very top of the page (although you can place it in other places):

To make an image gallery, use the wollowing format:

<gallery>
Image:image1.png|caption 1
Image:image2.png|caption 2
Image:image3.png|caption 3
</gallery>

Start each picture on a new line. You can use links and full wiki markup in the captions.

Click on these links here for a tutorial and more technical info and syntax info. HRWiki policy allows one uploaded image per user with no questions asked. For an example, I placed the following code at the top of your page:
That's all. Have fun! — It's dot com 22:33, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanx a bunch for telling me how to add images and adding an image and all that crap. Love your page. Cheatachu72
Anytime, my friend. It's my pleasure. And thanks for your comments about my page. — It's dot com 21:56, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

How to revert a page

  • YO! I do like what you did to my gallery, but I'd like to revert it for the time being. I do want to change it to your suggestion in the future, though. But, um, how do you revert? Cheatachu72 02:56, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
It was more complicated than normal to revert your page since you had already made changes to it. Here are some basic instructions on how to revert:
To completely revert a page to a previous version:
  1. View the history of the page in question.
  2. Click on the time and date of the version to which you want to revert; this will bring up the page as it was.
  3. Click "edit" at the top of the old version; it will warn you that you're editing an out-of-date version.
  4. Type a comment in the summary, usually something like "reverted edit of so-and-so; changed to last version by what's her face".
  5. Click "Save page".
To revert a page and keep some changes at the same time:
  1. View the history of the page in question.
  2. Determine what changes have been made since the version to which you want to revert.
  3. Copy the affected section to the clipboard. If there is more than one section, it may be necessary to do a normal revert (see above) and then make the changes again one at a time in later edits.
  4. In the page history, click on the time and date of the version to which you want to revert; this will bring up the page as it was.
  5. Click "edit" at the top of the old version; it will warn you that you're editing an out-of-date version.
  6. From the clipboard, paste in the new changes over the appropriate old section.
  7. Type a comment in the summary.
  8. Click "Show preview" to ensure that you pasted the new changes in correctly.
  9. Click "Save page".
In the section way above, I've included the syntax for the image gallery for whenever you want to go back to that. — It's dot com 03:48, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Where to link characters

I had a question. On the page for monster truck, should "The Sad kids" and "The King of town" in the transcript be changed to include links to thier respective pages? FYI, the sentence that would be changed is "{The Sad Kids and the King of Town appear on screen respectively crossed out}". —Smileyface11945

No. Characters are never linked in the transcript. Instead, they are listed at the top of the page in the order in which they appear. Also, whenever you post something on a talk page, type four tildes after it, like this: "~~~~". That will automatically sign your name and put a timestamp after it. It looks like this: — It's dot com 01:06, 24 Jul 2005 (UTC)

How to make the vertical line to appear

How do you make this vertical line appear? | It's used in a lot of links in the wiki, like this, but if I want to use the line, I always have to copy it from somewhere else. Can you press certain keys to make it appear? The Chort 14:11, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

It should be on your keyboard. Mine's above the enter key. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 14:30, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Hmm...let's see: | Hey, it worked! Thank you! You're my new best friend at this wiki! The Chort 14:33, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

No probalo... Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 14:34, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I'm glad I could bring you two closer together. I have nothing useful to say here, but since this is my talk page, I feel compelled to comment. The character The Chort is speaking of is called the vertical bar, or pipe. It is used in wiki markup to create piped links, tables, and other things. As Amanda (H*C) said, the key is usually located at the extreme right of the keyboard, just above the Enter (return) key, grouped with the backslash. On some keyboard configurations, the key is on the top row, just to the left of the Backspace (in this case the Enter key is about double its customary size and the Backspace is about half its normal size). To type a vertical bar, you must hold the Shift key. Well, I hope you enjoyed my short essay. I now return you to the wiki. — It's dot com 15:46, 16 Aug 2005 (UTC)

STUFF reform

The note

Here's the note you requested. HRWiki:IRC_channel? -- Tom 17:30, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Okay, I for the instructions, I have this:

{Tom's code moved here: User:It's dot com/instructions code}

You need to fix up Section II, since I have no idea what's going on there. (And quite possibily sections I and III as well.) You also might want to check out some of the bulleted points in the things to consider section for when you write up the instructions. Well, good luck. -- Tom 18:58, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

STUFF help

I would be glad to help you out Dot Com. I'm bored and I'm really digging what you are doing here. Keep up the good work. -- Tony Stony

On an aside note, when the time comes will you need help turning all of the current STUFF'd facts to your format? If so lemmie know and I can help you out. When do you think the big change might occur? -- Tony Stony
I'm shooting for the middle of this week. Maybe there won't be a new toon this week. That would help. — It's dot com 00:34, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Looks like you're about ready to make this happen. I would also be willing to help you and Tony with the big change, if you so desire. You know, taking what's currently in STUFF and putting it on the new page. There's a lot of them there. Just let me know. --Some HSR themed username 03:12, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I welcome any help I can get. I don't know the best way to go about it. I figure we'll have to temporarily close the STUFF page so that people aren't trying to edit it while we're converting it. Also, I want to open the format up for others to test. I'm trying to get that done tonight. I think the format is really easy to use, but I made it, so there could be problems I'm not seeing. I'll leave you a note on your talk page when I have more to report, which shouldn't be too long from now. — It's dot com 03:48, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
In case you didn't notice, I've discovered what is causing the problem in STUFF. Not external links in and of themselves (notice that "The Legend of Credits" has an external link.) It's the fact that there was an equal sign in one of the links. Try plugging a random equal sign into any fact (link or no) and see what happens. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 07:59, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

If you're looking for a response as to the new STUFF's simplicity, I would say it is pretty easy if you follow the directions. I do have a suggestion, though. For the how to revise page you have the entire template out for cutting and pasting, but the initial template setup has the optional things on parts of it. It might make it easier to take the optional notes and the false user votes off of that template so it's easy to cut and paste the entire thing. That's what I think anyway. Other than that, I think the new system is great. --Some HSR themed username 19:27, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I went ahead an implemented everything, including Protecting all the templates and DELETING!! all the test pages I could think of. If there are others I missed, feel free to TBD them. I ended up erasing a lot of old Verdicted facts on the old STUFF page - dig through the history if you really feel you need them. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 07:42, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

New STUFF Verdicts

The new STUFF looks prooty good! One little quibble: it appears that the original posting dates were not included when the open STUFFs were ported. My real question is: how should a VERDICT'D STUFF look? -- tomstiff 13:12, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The date thing was my fault. Anyway, I guess that a VERDICT should be another template or two, and should be put in place of the arguments and votes. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 17:02, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I fixed the dates. For verdicts, we can either move the items to the talk pages (like we do now), or they could be moved to a different subpage, like HRWIKI:STUFF Archive/pagename, for example. If we use an archive subpage, we should put a reference link on the talk page with the fact in question and the verdict.
As items close, they should definitely be moved somewhere. Otherwise, if down the line someone STUFFs something new from a page, all the old, closed facts will still be there. Once a template subpage is empty (all the facts have closed), the template subpage should be deleted. — It's dot com 17:13, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The rest of this discussion has moved to HRWiki_talk:STUFF#Verdicts.

My ace in the hole. You rock. Good prize. —BazookaJoe 06:15, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Well, thank you! (But what specifically are you referring to? And what does "less than three" mean in this context?)It's dot com 06:18, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Haha, "less than three" in this context means, "Yay! Heart!" This is just a random compliment for you. You know, because you're always cool. —BazookaJoe 06:25, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Of course! Now I see. (I'm not a big emoticon user myself, so you'll have to forgive my ignorance here.) And thanks for the encouraging words! Great jaerb on the Biz Cas Fri 1 transcript. It's always fun to help on those (especially since I rarely get the chance to do one — they're always done so quickly after a toon is released). Keep up the good troll fightin' recent patrollin' wiki gnomin' work! — It's dot com 06:38, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I already congraturated you once, but way to go, again, STUFF guru! -BazookaJoe 01:45, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

As always, you are welcome. Just curious, what made you think to say that this time? — It's dot com 01:46, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Well, I was sitting in Recent Changes... and just looking at the two jillion STUFF edits you make every two jillion seconds. That's very cool. -BazookaJoe 01:48, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Ha ha, it feels like that sometimes. The way I look at it, since I stirred up the waters by coming up with the format, I have an obligation to keep it as well-oiled as possible, and so I do a lot of maintenance on items, even if I don't actually participate in every vote. — It's dot com 01:52, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)
And well-oiled it is. -BazookaJoe 01:57, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

STUFF query

Hey It's dot com, I just noticed that one of bottom 10's STUFF entries is not ever going to succeed due to the author's mistake. (The Knott's Berry Farm one) It is not true, and will not get a single acceptance vote. I just thought it might be best to close that one now and save everybody time. On that note, I have also noticed that you are the only one who ever closes STUFFed facts, and was wondering if you wanted a hand with that. I am willing to help you out if you want me to.
Forever Young, small_logo.pngUsername-talk 20:17, 12 Jul 2005 (UTC)

To tell the truth, I don't mind doing it at all; it's fun. But others are of course welcome to do it (this is a wiki, after all); and certainly you should at least know how. (It's not difficult, but it is involved. The instructions are here.) I dunno, like I've said to BazookaJoe, since I made up the format, I feel responsible for making sure all the gears mesh and turn like they're supposed to. — It's dot com 20:49, 12 Jul 2005 (UTC)
P.S. I took care of that item like you suggested.

Anonymous STUFFing

Okay, it's one thing to say that Anonnies can't VOTE in STUFF facts. It's another entirely to say that they can't CREATE facts; I'd taken it for granted that they could. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:18, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)

The rules state: "You may only edit arguments while logged in." I would think that extends to creating items. If a user cares enough about an item, he can log in to create it. If an item truly is important, a logged-in user has probably already made it anyway. As for this particular item, it was such a stretch that it would have been deleted outright from the page. If you truly feel, however, that it needs to go through the process, resubmit it anew (but I've got a thousand dollars I would bet as to how the verdict will end up). — It's dot com 18:26, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Well, I don't disagree that it was a waste of space. I was more thinking about future reference—if someone actually adds a fact worth STUFFing. I suppose the only safeguards we had specified for unlogged users were votes and editing pre-existing arguments (it doesn't specifically say that unlogged users can't add facts or arguments) so I wanted clarification. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:44, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)
I'll admit, I threw it out on a technicality. A technicality I would probably overlook if it had any merit at all. The last couple of days it seems like people are abusing the STUFF page, STUFFing the most trivial bits of nothing. I was trying to make an example of something that clearly deserved to get the ax, to try and nip this in the bud. — It's dot com 18:52, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Fair enough. For example, I completely deleted a false "Fact" yesterday (regarding The Cheat's bendable arms never appearing before outside of Cheat Commandos, in spite of the fact that they'd been seen in caper and virus), so imagine my surprise today to find that it had been re-added (albeit prematurely Verdicted). Was it the same guy? How could multiple people make that mistake? And, as a result of your previous comments, I modified the "Add a toon/Add an item/Revise an item" instructions; now, all three say that you must be logged in. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:56, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)
"Early," not "premature." When several users find multiple instances that directly contradict an item, it is patently false and therefore not worth our time. — It's dot com 18:59, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Er, maybe my wording was a bit confusing, but I already knew that. I tend to refer to facts as "prematurely closed" when they're closed early no matter what the reason—even if I was the one who did it. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 19:03, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Ah, I see. I took it in the sense of "before it should have been", but "before normal" works too. — It's dot com

Well, I started adding him, and then I got called away from my computer, and by the time I got back you had already blocked him. I did notice this, but since it's such a hassle to add somebody to the table (what with making a list of all their evil edits and whatnot) and since I had already gone to the trouble, I just hit "Save page" anyway. Hi Stux. If someone ever needs to be added to the troll list, then by all means do it. Don't even worry if you mess up the format... if you should encounter problems somebody will be along to fix it. I'll take a look at Hydro now. Thanks for bringing it to someone's (in this case, my) attention. — It's dot com 14:12, 28 Sep 2005 (UTC)

My apologies for bugging you again. I think i'm trying to upgrade my status from being Mr. Fix minor things to being Mr. Pain-in-the-behind Wannabe. What am I talking about? Basically, fact checking. To what extent should we do fact checking. I was checking Matt Chapman's page history and noticed that the last change added the misc fact: "*Can be seen as an audience member in one episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway?" This is very general and my fingers are itching to revert it and leave a 'please provide evidence' note. But I haven't. Perhaps out of pity. Suggestions? (Do you have a fact-checking or fact adding set of guidelines even for admins?) --Stux 01:31, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Well, I hate to interrupt somebody else's conversation, but I checked this myself. If you look at Matt's IMBD page, it lists him as an uncredited audience member near the bottom. --DorianGray
I don't know about It's dot com cuz it's his message bored but I personally appreciate the interruption. Not to mention quick response! Wow, amazing, I didn't think they'd credit such minor things, but they did! Thanks DorianGray! (and thank you It's dot com for letting me use your Talk page!) --Stux 01:43, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for letting me know about the discussion regarding deleted redirects of the first two Strong Bad Emails. I was previously unaware of the accusations by Jay against me. I don't think he was accusing you, just perhaps mistaken. But if it wasn't you, then, obviously, you can't. Ah, well. I think the redirects are going to go forward (if E.L. Cool or others are still up to it). Baseball fan!

Hey Dot com! Are you a baseball fan?--bkmlb

I should probably add this to my user page sooner or later, but I'm a huge fan of baseball, and Major League Baseball in particular, and more specifically the Texas Rangers Baseball Club. I've got my trusty Rangers ballcap on right now, as always. I've been to several games this year and plan on more. I don't live in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, otherwise I would have season tickets at Ameriquest Field. I make up for it by keeping track of the team on TV, radio, and at mlb.com using Gameday, Gameday Audio, and MLB.TV. I mainly follow the AL (my second-favorite club is the Yankees), but I do like some NL teams: the Nationals, the Astros, the Mets, and (sorry) the Cubs, to name a few. Tonight, as it turns out, the Rangers topped the Orioles, 4–2, in Baltimore. Yay! — It's dot com 03:32, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Cool! You're only the second user I've heard of that is a baseball fan (other than me, there are two I've heard of). If you're not a huge cub fan then you won't bother me--and if you're not drunk, I'll be fine.--bkmlb

Not a huge Cub fan, but I do pull for them as the perennial underdogs, especially now that the Red Sox have won it all. Even being a Yankee fan, when Boston was able to overcome a 3–0 deficit, when in Game 4 all Rivera had to do was put out the side in the ninth... well, at that point I was pleased to see the BoSox finally rid themselves of that blasted curse! (I can't remember, who was it they beat in the World Series? ;) ) — It's dot com 14:24, 26 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Yeah. I know, the Cardinals lost. I went to game four of the World Series, I was sad *sniffle*. I remember there were lots of Red Sox fans around us. One guy was talking to his wife on the phone the whole time. When the Sox won, my dad asked this red sox fan next to us, "What will you do now? This is your whole Idenity." And the red sox fan said back, " What year is it 86 years from now?" But the cubs haven't won the series since 1908!--bkmlb

DVD

Hey, how's your stuff for the DVD coming? Are you still working on Puppets on the Road? Oh, and are you doing Sample of Style Too? Because if not, I think I am going to take a stab at rewriting its transcript today. —BazookaJoe 13:35, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I see that the Sample of Style Too main part and outtakes are both just about done. I didn't read the transcript closely... you say you're going to rewrite it? I was working on Puppets on the Road, but I was wiped out last night and didn't finish it. I'd still like to complete POTR, but if somebody beats me to it, I won't be upset. — It's dot com 14:38, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I wrote Sample of Style Too's transcript using snippets of NYU Talk's transcript. There were many differences between the two videos (see Talk:Sample of Style Too). I would love it if you could get Puppets on the Road up. It's funny and popular with fans and I'm sure they would love to read it. I don't mean to rush you, though. —BazookaJoe 04:30, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Nah, I just kinda got slammed with going out of town and then I actually had to go in to my job and do real work. Sometimes, I can goof off here, but not today. And tonight, I was in a softball game. And we won the game. And so we went and got real fruit smoothies. (Really.) I figured at some point someone would just go ahead and take POTR from me if I didn't get a chance to finish it. I'm not even at my home computer (where my DVD is and where I've done all the DVD stuff), or I'd do it now. So to sum up, if somebody else does it instead because I dragged my feet, that's cool; but otherwise, I can do it by later tomorrow. If you should do it, just drop me a note here so I won't worry. — It's dot com 04:45, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Speculation or no

What was this for? It's not merely speculation; it's a likely reference. --195.92.67.69 16:52, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Really? When an item is phrased using words like "could be" and "whether she actually did is debatable," it sure sounds like speculation to me. And you're not considering the fact that Marzipan breaks up with Homestar 50% of the time on her character video. — It's dot com 16:59, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Gah. I hate this wiki. Well, maybe not wiki, more like you and BazookaJoe seemingly cutting every edit I make. In fact, I'm going to stop editing this thing and just watch the cartoons in peace. --195.92.67.69 17:02, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Thankyou so much for all your help and ideas. I hope you can keep on being nice to me and I to you. Email me if you want. --Pertmywert| 02:32, 10 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Pertmywert, to answer the question you asked earlier, I think you're a fine user. You've made several good contributions recently, including some necessary reverts. Also, in all seriousness, I appreciate your willingness to welcome new users. I think your ♥ is in the right place there. (Side note: there's a link in your welcome template that says "me" but actually points to JoeyDay. Perhaps change "me" to "JoeyDay".)
Remember that not everybody stays at their computer every minute of every day, so sometimes patience is required when waiting for a response. And it's an unfortunate fact that many of the users go unnoticed who do a lot of little but important things. It's like an umpire in baseball, who nobody pays any attention to when everything is going fine, but people rant and shout when a call is blown.
A couple of pointers: whenever you're describing your edits, try to avoid emotionally charged words like "useless", etc. It's sufficient just to say "reverted such-and-such to version by so-and-so". Even better, try to find the good parts of an edit see if you can reword them so they fit into the article. (See this edit for an example.)
To sum up, keep up the good work learning, gaining experience, and making quality contributions.
Sincerely,
It's dot com 03:20, 10 Jul 2005 (UTC)

br format

I was just wondering why you changed the <br clear="all" /> to <br style="clear:both" /> on Template:Strong Bad Email. Well, earlier this week I read this: "IE generally does not seem to appreciate using br as a clearing agent. Too, the clear attribute is deprecated in html4 in favor of the style property." Brilliance

You sir, are quite a genius. I was trying to figure out a good way of keeping the two Inside Jokes lists the same. Your solution for its sister page, Running Gags, is perfect. Therefore I copied it on Inside Jokes. Thank you very much, and keep up the good work. Thunderbird 00:28, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, TBird! Organizing Strong Bad Emails in different ways I can understand. But it just didn't make sense to have two lists with identical information organized the same way. We misinterpret "Once and Only Once" around here, but this was a clear case where it fit perfectly. Thanks for the compliment! And I will keep it up! — It's dot com 05:07, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I know, it was kinda a tricky thing. I suggested just making Category:Running Gags the whole page, but Tom said they weren't meant for that. I never thought of just making the page link to the list, instead of being the list. Thanks for thinking of it. Thunderbird 17:17, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)

The Process

Hey, Dot com, it's The Smoking Monkey. As you seem both knowledgeable and up front about how things get done, I thought I'd come to you. Recently, I've been doing the whole recent change patrolling bit, and have come up with the following questions:

  • Do all edits done by anonymous users need to be reverted? I've encountered a few that are correct or beneficial.
  • Conversely, if a registered user makes a questionable edit (say, for example, adding a goof or remark that is open to debate), what would I do? I've reverted a couple, and I need to make sure this is within the rules.

Thanks for any input you might have.

Well, Smoking Monkey, anonymous users are more than welcome to contribute. I daresay everyone (with the exception of the handful of people who actually set up the wiki) started out as an anonymous user. They often have insight or experience that are invaluable to getting to the bottom of an article. The reason we keep such a close eye on people who aren't members is that it just happens that most of the edits that are redundant, obvious, or otherwise non-beneficial come from anonymous users. The vast majority of trolls are anonymous as well. So, to make a long story short, do not automatically revert anonymous edits. (Note: if we wanted, we could prevent anonymous editing with a simple setting; obviously, we have not chosen to do this.)
If a logged in user makes a bad edit, it can be reverted just like an anonymous edit. Logged-in users get a little special treatment, however. First of all, it's polite to list a reason in the edit summary instead of simply rolling back the page. Second, if an edit is borderline, strongly consider starting a discussion on the relevant talk page instead of simply removing another user's work.
I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions. — It's dot com 17:02, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Understood. I don't want to be overzealous in reverting things - the last thing I want to do is step on toes and hurt feelings. But my "common sense" might not be so "common" to everyone. Trying to be careful as I go. -TSM
I just happened upon this discussion and figured I drop a word or two. My general rule of thumb is this: revert bad edits, keep good ones. Rewrite bad wording (there's *A LOT* of it). Have fun, be polite, but be bold! It's pretty simple, really! -- tomstiff 17:06, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the input! -- THE SMOKING MONKEY 17:13, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)
That's an excellent way to put it, Tom (I've always assumed your name is Tom... your user page has never said anything other than "Hello world!"). I'll probably steal your rule of thumb and not give you credit, just so you know. ;) To it I would add one thing: if you ever have legitimate doubt about whether an anonymous edit is good or bad, take the action that leads to more content. That is, if someone adds something but you're not sure, then just leave it. But if an anonny deletes something (especially something big) that you think has merit, put it back.
There's always more than one logged-in user looking at these pages, so it all usually gets straightened out in the end. — It's dot com 17:19, 25 Aug 2005 (UTC)

New Template

Thanks Dot Com, that color looks good. I'm just wondering about the centering. On the Email template (the one I modeled this one after), it's much larger, and fills the whole screen from side to side. This one doesn't, so on larger displays, such as mine, it's shifted to the left. Any idea how to center it? (And for the sizing, it's small on the Strong Bad Emails to save space. I don't think it'd be too bad to have medium font on this template, for easier reading and clicking). Thunderbird 04:53, 31 Aug 2005 (UTC)
EDIT: I think the centering thing could be something to do with 'width="100%"' Thunderbird 04:55, 31 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Er, I guess you haven't looked at the template again yet, because I already fixed the centering. All the other nav templates (SB email, answering machines, CD, DVD, etc.) use <small>, so I figured this one should, too. — It's dot com 05:04, 31 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm... For some reason it still seems askew on my browser. Oh well, I don't care much. Like so many things on a wiki, I'm sure it'll somehow get fixed later, by someone else. And sorry about the sizing thing, I guess I'm wrong on that. In any case, I'm going to bed. Here's hoping the trolls do too. Thunderbird 05:08, 31 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Free Country USA

It's dot com, it's your friendly neighborhood Smoking Monkey again. I just wanted to comment on the Free Country, USA thing earlier today, because I've made you my unofficial HRWiki mentor and seek your advice from time to time on Wiki matters.

In any case, what caught my attention was an anonymous user dumped, say, 50% more info on the Free Country article. I've noticed over the weeks that 90% of anonymous edits tend to be speculation, stating the obvious, or just plain wrong. Let's say the other 9% are helpful typo, spelling and grammar corrections. It's that 1% that leads to doubt. This guy/gal radically expanded a decent article, but I couldn't tel whether the expansion was worthy or not. I know I was previously advised to err on the side of expanded content, but I've seen even registered users get slammed for adding little bits of info to articles. This guy/gal added a lot, and when I first saw it, I balked. It seemed like speculation, so I reverted.

Then Mr. Bojangles re-reverted. I looked at it a second time - this time I saw disconnected thoughts that added only confusion - so I reverted again.

Then you reverted my change, and I looked at it a third time. This time, I saw neither speculation nor confused thinking - only prose that needed refining.

I admit I've been in a bad mood recently, and have been, er, draconian in my enforcement of what I perceive is appropriate for the Wiki. I admit I was wrong reverting this article across the board.

Hopefully I made it up by actually adding to and trying to improve on the additions of the anonymous (and British) user - I got a little too caught up in making sure others play by the rules...

Faithfully patrolling the Wiki, THE SMOKING MONKEY 00:26, 6 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Your characterization of anonymous edits is probably dead-on accurate (except when pages are first being created, which isn't that often, relatively speaking). If someone has something important to add, they usually take the step of registering first. Most of my edits were relatively minor until I registered. In fact, it was when I was trying to add something more substantial that I was encouraged to join.
I appreciate that you consider me something of a mentor, and I take seriously my responsibility to you and others I help. I carefully consider any advice I give, and it is always my hope that each user's experience here is improved by my input. This can't always be the case when someone disagrees with me, but in cases like that I try to be as diplomatic as possible. As far as anonymous users go, I try to incorporate any part of their contributions that I can—anything—so that they will feel important and be comfortable enough to finally become full contributing members.
In this specific case, you may notice that I didn't do a straight revert, but rather cleaned it up a bit before adding it back.
If there's anything else I can help you with, you know I will. Besides, we 28-year-olds have to stick together. — It's dot com 01:42, 6 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I see you're taking your critical, incisive eye to my runway pet project (Free Country, USA)- and it's about time. Of all the times I've proof-read, and internally debated the structure and the "facts" of the article, I knew that others would need to parse and improve on my own thoughts. And, speaking of my own thoughts, all I have to thank for my (irrational?) devotion to this article is some anonymous British kid I tried to censor.
In any case, I think most of it holds up well.
I really need to sleep,
THE SMOKING MONKEY 02:49, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Sleep well, Dave. Irrational devotion to articles, by the way, can strangely be a good thing, and is therefore completely welcome around here. — It's dot com 03:19, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Hey It's dot com! I was wondering what you did with the 2005 updates page? Was it a ploy to annoy the troll? Rogue Leader / (my talk) 02:08, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Hey Rogue. That troll is not a person; rather, it is some kind of bot that searches for the different sections on the page and adds links under each one. My reasoning was that if I removed all the sections, it would have nothing to do, and would quit. In the meantime, I put up a notice so that any regular user who was looking at the page would be aware of what was going on. I don't know whether my actions actually did anything, or whether it was just coincidence that the attack stopped (almost) at that point. Only further research will tell. — It's dot com 02:14, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Another positive consequence: it may help the bot move on to less-visible pages. —BazookaJoe 02:32, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)
It just happened again, and this time I think blanking the page actually did some good. The bot made one more attempt after I blanked it, but then it moved on. — It's dot com 03:27, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Jay here. I see from the Recent Changes page that the two of you were named sysops at the Homestar Runner Wiki. Way to go! Join the elite ranks! I was actually thinking a while back that you two would make [good sysops], though I played no part in the actual decision. I'd congratulate you on the Wiki itself, but, well... (from Jay via email at 09:35, 10 Sep 2005 (UTC), sent while the wiki was locked)
To note, the above was also sent to BazookaJoe (who was named a sysop at the same time). I wasn't really expecting it to appear on this Wiki... Pronounced with an "RWiki"

This is a bit trivial, but an interesting fact. As you know, I'm all hung up on England, and even spent three weeks there. In response to your question 'wouldn't it be pronounced aitch-are-wiki?', the answer is 'no'. Not in England. Just the same way they pronounce the letter Z as 'zed', they also put an H sound in front of H, making it 'haitch' or something thereof. I'm not sure if this is of significance, but it's an interesting fun-fact nonetheless. I think so, anyway. But since the Wiki (and H*R itself) are American-based, your 'an HRWiki namespace' would technically be correct. --DorianGray

Blockquote

How do you make that "blockquote" (i'm not sure what it is called but thats what it said in editing) where it shows what Strong Bad wrote on his computer on the transcripts? Is there a way to do it in HTML or just plain text? I'm just curious, because I think it will be so cool if I write my internet blogs like that.

Thanks again and again. You are the one user that I always go to for help! THANKS!--Martin925 19:22, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in responding. I might suggest that you would get a faster reply by posting questions to the FAQ talk page. Anyway, it's possible to recreate the blockquote style outside the wiki, but you need to know some CSS and where to find it. First of all, the HTML (<blockquote> ...blah blah <br/> ... </blockquote>) is the same as the code you get when you press "edit", so you could just copy one of those to practice. What you need then is the various definitions for "email" found in MediaWiki:Monobook.css (and possibly other CSS files... check the source code of a wiki page to see what they are). Also, you would need the image of Strong Bad's face copied and saved to your server. It sounds kinda coplicated, but I hope this helps. — It's dot com 21:55, 19 Sep 2005 (UTC)

WOW

Hey, Ben. I know you probably noticed, but we had a WOW-style vandal before (Homestar walker). But he...apologized? He seems a tad confused. — THE SMOKING MONKEY 18:01, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Hey, Dave. I did notice. In fact, I deleted all the bogus redirects I could find. I think I got them all. As for blocking him, I wasn't sure whether to do it. If blocking would lead to more vandalism but not blocking wouldn't, then I'm willing to leave well enough alone. I was actually seeking advice from Joey and/or Tom, but neither of them seems to be online right at the moment. Obviously, if Willy or whoever this gets so much as a toe out of line again, he'll get the indefinite block. What do you think? I haven't been able to get in touch with any of the other sysops, either, so he could yet be blocked by one of them and this discussion would be moot. — It's dot com 18:12, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)
'Tis rather curious. I can't help but feel we're being blackmailed by the devil. Thunderbird 21:15, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm...since it was my first WOW-battling incident, I was bit hot afterwards, especially when he came out and said "sorry" and then "if you try to block me, I'll just do it again." It all seemed typically sophmoric to me - clearly he was having fun moving the same four pages over and over and over again, but then he lost interest and indicated he wanted to contribute. Essentially, he was malicious, but only so long as it saved him from being bored.
Your point is well-taken, though: if we can't actually block him because of the AOL loop-hole, then I guess it shouldn't be a problem if he continues behaving like a normal user. I'm not big on holding grudges, and if Venusy and bkmlb (the other two users caught up in the battle against him) don't have a problem with him staying on, then I don't have a problem.
That is, until he gets bored again! THE SMOKING MONKEY 10:56, 24 Sep 2005 (UTC) (Incidentally, the idea of a smoking monkey on wheels is pretty funny in and of itself)

sysops

I was wondering, how do you become a sysops? -lil stiny

I have actually written on this subject on several other pages. Below is a copy of this discussion. — It's dot com 18:19, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hey AtHC, How do people become Administrators? I've been thinking about that... -Kinsey
I don't want to presume to speak for Aurora, but I've written at length about this very subject on this page, if that helps. — It's dot com 19:42, 12 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Here is the relevant text from that page:
Becoming an admin, as they're also called, is a good goal to have, but it doesn't happen overnight. Basically, you start out at the bottom of the totem pole, and work your way up. Over time, people will begin to notice your edits; you'll want to make good ones. If you do, gradually a sense of trust will develop between you and the wiki community. In the meantime, fight trolls, add good fun facts, monitor pages for bad edits, help out with the maintenance of the site, learn the ins and outs of the software. Undertake a worthwhile project (but ... it's best to get approval before doing so). Then, sometime in the future, the current admins will open the floor for nominations for new sysops, at which time another user can throw your name in the ring. Then, we'll all vote on you. They probably won't nominate new admins for a while, and when they do, maybe you'll be nominated, maybe not. Either way, keep on keepin' on making good edits and building up that trust. It's just that simple!
I'm glad you posted that, It's dot com, because it's a good explanation! Definately monitor for edits, learn to recognize good and poor edits, and always be diplomatic in discussions. Undertaking worthwhile projects (with wiki-approval first) is a great way to contribute and be noticed. To all of this, I would add that you should think about why you want to become an administrator. If you want to be an administrator to have more power, that's the wrong reason. It's about responsibility, not power, and it sometimes involves doing unpleasant things. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 19:46, 12 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Super-plain link

Is there any way to link something, but keep it just a regular black color, without underlining or anything? perhaps some kind of color tags or a 'no underline' tag before and after? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Thunderbird 19:42, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Sure. One of the words in this sentence is a link to a page. If you wanted to be really sneaky, I think you could even force it not to show the "hand pointing" cursor that is usually displayed when you're over a link. Out of curiosity, what makes you ask? — It's dot com 19:58, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm... The link is still underlined. And It's not that I want it sneaky, I still want the hand to pop up. I just want uniformity. Is there any way to get rid of the underline? Then I'll let you know why. Thunderbird 20:04, 23 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Reynold

Alright, I have to ask. As my first bold attempt at helping keep the peace in this particular Wiki, I remove a Wikipedia reference to pizza. Why is a link to such a common food necessary? Come back, chocolates!

Where is the harm in including it? The article is interesting, and you might be surprised how much pizza differs in other countries from the U.S. version. — It's dot com 16:52, 29 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Below are some general suggestions for anyone who might be faced with this issue in the future. — It's dot com 21:40, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)

If you find a troll, especially one in progress:

  • Revert each affected page to the last good version (the instructions for reverting are at the top of HRWiki:WikiTroll).
  • Use the edit comment "reverting trolling". This will help the sysops notice something is wrong.
  • Make an entry on HRWiki:WikiTroll for the troll. If no sysops are around at the time of the vandalism, they can check the list and make appropriate blocks later.

Some things to remember, especially in the face of a serious attack:

  • Remain calm.
  • Remain professional.

Some things not to do:

  • Do not feed the trolls.
  • That is, do not put anything in edit summaries that would encourage them to continue their attacks.
  • Likewise, do not try to reason with them or taunt them on their talk pages.

Hope that helps! — It's dot com

It does, thanks!!!! --— talk Bubsty edits 22:14, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)

How does one make editing comments? -Thechamp 21:43, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Click "edit" at the right over there → . Then look just below the editing window. See where it says "Summary"? Type something in that box. That's how you leave an edit comment. — It's dot com 21:47, 1 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Alphabetizing Categories and Catchin' Trolls

This seems like a good place to put stuff... I don't wanna clutter your talk by making new categories, that's why I keep piggybacking my messages. Ever thought of Archiving!? (gasp!) Hehe. Anyway on to buisness:

  • Ooooohhh! Right! So that's what it does. I thought it changed how the entry looked in the category list, and seeing no change, thought it did nothing. I had to remove it cuz it was autolinking to PseudoCharacters edit page, and I am sure I had created the link after I made the page. And I think I tried to purge... the hard way... Maybe? Anyway thanks for the fix!
  • BTW check out my first troll person report!

--Stux 16:10, 3 Oct 2005 (UTC)

If a comment really is a continuation of an earlier thread, then go ahead and piggyback, but if it's a new thought, then it's perfectly fine to (and I prefer that you would) start a new thread. :) I reorganize my talk page from time to time and it helps me keep everything straight. As for archiving, I'm probably gonna put it off for at least a little bit longer. Only recently has this page exploded to the point that archiving would be necessary. If you want to see a page really in need of being split, look at Tom's talk page.
As for the user who deleted things, well, he's not a troll. You may disagree with the things he deleted, but each example was something that is borderline. I even agree with a couple of them. Also, there's no reason to think that he saw the message left him in the edit summaries. Most anonymous users probably never look there. If you need to leave him a note, you should do so on his talk page.
Sorry for removing him from the troll list, because I can tell you're proud of it and that your heart is in the right place. Don't worry... there'll be plenty others. ;) — It's dot com 16:36, 3 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Yeah.... I was proud of it. You're quite observant! :). Bye troll edit :'( ... ;) To me they looked like random edits removing credible information. He was just over that side of the line (except for his first edit). Oh well. Next time! Catch ya later! --Stux 20:36, 3 Oct 2005 (UTC)

IP block issues

Yo, Mr. Dot Com, might I ask why you keep blocking my IP address every time, and also mark me as a "repeat offender?" I asked nicely for you and the other sysops to fix the rpoblem of this, because it's getting extremely frustrating for me when I want to edit something and I can't because somebody with a similar IP addy is trolling the site. This is now the fifth time that something like this has happened, and the second consecutive time that it's been you who has blocked me. I know you're just trying to do your job, but it isn't fair to people who follow all the wiki rules to be blocked just because of idiotic trolls who like to delete pages and add cuss words to them. --ISlayedTheKerrek 01:57, 5 Oct 2005 (UTC)

I apologize for any inconvenience, ISlayedTheKerrek. I will be happy to investigate your situation further, but I need some more information. What was the IP address that was blocked? When did you notice the problem? How do you connect to the Internet? I have reviewed the block log, and any blocks I have imposed for any real length are for what I consider serious infractions. There have been only three occasions when I have used the comment "repeat offender," only one of which was recent. In addition, the IPs fitting this description have had zero legitimate edits. Unfortunately, since this seems to be a recurring problem, it may not have a simple solution. There are some real jerks out there whose mission in life seems to be to spoil the fun for everybody else. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we try to sort this out. — It's dot com 04:23, 5 Oct 2005 (UTC)
My IP address, although I don't know EXACTLY which one it is offhand, is in the 205 range. ISlayedTheKerrek, if you ever find yourself blocked from editing again, please simply email a sysop or the Admins a short note explaining the situation. Well, at least I justified it by doing it for no good reason whatsoever. ;) ...Seriously (and I know you said don't take it seriously), you can fix others' formatting to a point, so long as you don't change the content of their comments. And, for purely aesthetic value, those color words really needed to be colorized. I would have gone with green for "greediest" (which of course is not a color word, just different from "greatest"), but it was already taken by "greenest." — It's dot com 16:35, 5 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Help creating welcome template?

I'm kinda embarrassing, since this is the sort of thing that seems like it ought to be easy to find an answer to—but it hasn't been. I want to start welcoming folks formally, and thought it would be nice to make an adapted welcome message of my own. I know doing this would involve creating a subpage in my userspace—but I have no idea how to go about that. Thanks! —notstrongorbad 05:32, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Oooo! May I? (answer this one?) Making templates and new pages is really easy. So I hope I can explain well. First things first, new pages. All you need to do to create a page is to go to it and start editing it. Make sure you save the page, so it actually writes something down to create the page! Suppose you wanted to create a page called "strombalos" under your user space, then you'd go to User:notstrongorbad/strombalos (notice how it's in red now -- if you click on it now it'll take you straight to the edit page), and start adding information. It's that simple! You can even (from your user page) type the new URL yourself and start it that way. As for templates: all you need to do for the basic form is to put regular wiki code. There is more on templates that you can learn here, cuz they have neat stuff like variables and the like. There is more general help here. Now for your specific case, you want to make a welcome page for our guests. I won't go into detail here, but you must use the template format in a special way. Suppose you had a template User:notstrongorbad/welcome_template in that page. Then you inject the code: into the victims', er, guests page and hit submit. It will inject the code and replace the contents of the template in his page. To practice, you can always use the Sandbox. Good luck! I hope this helps. --Stux 07:57, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)
And that's what I needed to know! DONK! Many thanks. —notstrongorbad 08:12, 8 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Block

Dot com, you blocked me then unblocked me.-24.24.226.13

Yes. You keep messing with HRWiki:WikiTroll, and it's hard to tell whether you're doing so maliciously. I suggest not doing that. The time that I blocked you, I thought you were blanking the page; then I realized those had recently been moved to an archive. — It's dot com 23:10, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Hyphen?!

(in regards to Freshley's) I know it's an apostrophe; I have no idea what I was thinking when I made the edit. Just so you know that I'm not completely stupid. :-) The reason I reverted the edit, though, was even though it's correct, the display of the link is really funky, and for readability, it probably needs to be without the apostrophe, correct or not. Spell4yr 20:19, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean by really funky. I just looked at it again, and it looks normal to me. Either way, it's correct with the apostrophe, so it probably needs to be with it, funky or not. — It's dot com 23:22, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
At least for me, the external link box doesn't show up, unlike next to Mrs. Freshley's and the like, so there's several spaces between the word Shaw's and the text that follows it (such as Shaw's____and then text). But yeah, it does need it. That's why I had added it in the first place, but then I figured that it wasn't in the word because the link looked weird, so I took it back out. So it turns out that an edit of mine that I reverted was reverted back. Or something. My head hurts. — Spell4yr 05:07, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

At least I have a better idea of how play around with this more efficiently! :D --Stux 04:35, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Heh. Yeah, I was gonna follow along with what you were doing, but all that extra stuff kept getting in the way. Oh, well. Glad I could almost help. ;) — It's dot com 04:46, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Regarding the Article of the Day

Thanks for the image revert. I probably should have discussed the choice of image earlier, but hindsight is 50/50. I didn't exactly have my heart set on any one image, since the one I came up with originally was a different one altogether. I could see an edit war happening with this feature, what with like 50 images to choose from. I just wanted something easy to make out and understandable, that embodied the early Fanstuff, particularly drawings (since they don't usually feature those anymore). But the Matrix parody is a fun, clever, simple pic, and one that TBC also meantioned in the FAQ. Thanks for keeping watch. ;) Thunderbird 03:15, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

I've protected images on the main page before. Are we also supposed to protect featured articles as well? — It's dot com 03:31, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
If it's changed again, we could just protect the article. I don't think usually, since alot of users link stuff, fix wording, ect. Perhaps something similar in the future might warrent a featured article overview protect. Thunderbird 03:47, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

2D Boombox

I just rewatch Sibbie. It looks like the radio gets thinner which would make it a goof as it loses normal aspect ratio but I wouldn't care so much if this doesn't make it. I R F 18:34, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Hey, It's dot com. Just wondering what's up with the E-mail this User feature. Whenever you press the link, it says that you need to log in or enter a valid email address in your preferences. Any ideas what's wrong? — Lapper (talk) 02:09, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Oz

Look, it's clear you don't support the Oz reference. Let me at least put it where I intended it to be, and quit moving it. It's about to die anyway, let it rest where it belongs. There is no need to reply. B 04:32, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Too late. It's dead. — It's dot com 04:33, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Well great, and now because of your tampering with it, we have an archive that carries your agenda rather than the question being discussed. Hope you enjoyed the power trip. B 04:43, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh, spare me the theatrics. As explained on the page, the throwaway line in different down didn't even compare to the visuals New Boots provided. If anything, that's where the reference would be. But, like I said there, it's not a reference in the first place. — It's dot com 04:50, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Speaking of theatrics, now you've blanked your page? I don't see why you would leave just because we disagree on which toon this item doesn't refer to. — It's dot com 04:55, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Okay, play nice, guys. It's understandable you'd be frustrated, B, since I agree that different town should have been the only toon in discussion. But on the other hand, it stood even less chance than New Boots, so the change did you a favor of sorts. But either way, I find it's best to separate yourself from pages/edits you create; if they wind up going down, it's not a personal thing. (I say that, but yeah, I still find it hard.) —AbdiViklas 04:57, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
While that item was open, I thought about trying to tie the two pages in together, but after the voting got going, I realized it wasn't worth the effort. I maintain that if the reference were true, both toons would be independent references to the Oz episode, and New Boots—not different town—would have the strongest connection to it. Therefore, B, I resent your saying that I was going on a power trip, since I sincerely believe my actions to be in line with what was best for the wiki. Those who know me well know that I take great pains to avoid the mere hint of such a so-called trip. I do apologize, however, if my actions seemed in haste to you. That was not my intention. — It's dot com 05:18, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
In the interest of fairness to all points of view, I have amended the page with a link to both toons, and I will be including it in the main archive under both names and on both talk pages. I hope this compromise is satisfactory. — It's dot com 05:47, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
The issue is that I have decided that I have better things to do than to remain attached to the seedy underbelly that is the wiki disussion. I will continue to visit, as the site is really cool. I won't make contributions unless no one else can provide what I have to offer, or if there is a blatant error on a page. I may continue to play on the sound effects page. Other than that, I have nothing else to add.
The amendment is acceptable. The beef was not with what was the better referene. My beef was that it kept getting moved and altered. And without comment. The whole event was a display in discourteousness (on both parts, mine especially). I don't do much of this, and I worked hard trying to get that right. I appreciate the re-consideration.
end of line. B 05:55, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Alphabetical order

Here's a puzzle for anybody concerned. It's about Inside Jokes and Running Gags. Try going to each page, and clicking on the 'List of ______'. It seems that the article Inside Jokes, which is also in the category, is listed under 'L', as it should be. However, Running Gags is listed under '*'. Anybody know why this would happen? Is this happening to everyone? I dunno, it just seems kinda weird. Thunderbird 05:39, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Someone put an asterisk in the link so that it would be listed first in the list. I made the other one match (although the dollar sign is coming before the asterisk, which probably should be fixed, but I'm not gonna do it now). — It's dot com 05:45, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
I won't do anything then -- I was about to make a similar change just now. I was actually thinking of doing it the other way: using the alphabet entries, but of course this makes more sense. Anyway, here's Dot com's change so you can see what he did. --Stux 05:48, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Devil's advocate here, but shouldn't that type of be a warning? Say he's only 11 and just an annoying kid but given a warning would stop, but on the other hand, he comes back tomorrow and is blocked and therefore doesn't come back anymore. I think there should be some standard of the severity of punishment to refer to. I R F 22:04, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Personal attacks are not tolerated. It's as simple as that. Joey briefly mentioned perhaps just giving a warning, but after looking at the contribs agreed that a temporary block was in order. We've dealt with this guy's strangeness before. Thanks for asking questions, though. — It's dot com 22:11, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

As an addendum, I realize that he might not realize he was being offensive, perhaps because he's too young or immature. But that's not what I care about. I care about keeping this wiki a place where someone doesn't have to worry about that kind of thing showing up on his or her talk page. If someone isn't old enough to use the wiki responsibly and sensitively, then perhaps that person should stick to reading pages. — It's dot com
I don't know if this matters much, but the remarks that user made seem to stem from this discussion. As you can see, AbdiViklas and I suggested that the discussion should stop, but some kept going on it. I wish there were a way to get people to stop doing this sort of thing. Not that it excuses the blocked user, though. Heimstern Läufer 08:29, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

source code

First off, are you sick or somthing (I ask because of the whole Strong Sad picture)? Can you or someone else let the code be seen for Special:Statistics. I'd like to maybe use one of the type item for my user page. Also is there any place that lists all of the things like this and what each one displays. Is there one the will return the number of edits that I have made? I R F 18:22, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, here is the code:
There are $1 total pages in the database.
This includes "talk" pages, pages about SITENAME, minimal "stub"
pages, redirects, and others that probably don't qualify as content pages.
Excluding those, there are $2 pages that are probably legitimate
content pages.

There have been a total of $3 page views, and $4 page edits
since the wiki was set up.
That comes to $5 average edits per page, and $6 views per edit.
As you can see, it uses PHP variables instead of MediaWiki variables (except for sitename), so it wouldn't work on your page without editing the source code for the project. But there are ways to do interesting things with your page. A lot of Wikipedia users have developed custom tools like this. Unfortunately, I don't know where to tell you to look for them or even whether they would work on our wiki. I seem to recall Lapper experimenting with something like this, but for one reason or another he couldn't get it to work. Sorry I wasn't much help here. — It's dot com 18:31, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
And, no, I'm not sick. That's for a friend. — It's dot com 18:32, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
I took out the <pre></pre> syntax and did show preview to see what it would look like, and nothing happened. Does it only work on that one page that i mentioned above? I R F 19:31, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
Right. Those variables are filled in by the code that generates that particular page. — It's dot com 19:33, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, here's the code:

Don't change anything except what's in red. See the red number 1 there? That controls the stress level. It can be 1, 2, 3, or 4. The 150px controls the size of the image, which you can adjust. Last, you can make the caption anything you want. — It's dot com 01:33, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

You could try talking to Teh Pape. He's got a special cursor on his Talk page, and I don't know how he did it. I don't know if you're able to do it with custom cursers though, or if he's got one of a few options or something. Thunderbird 23:32, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
I knew there were other users that had done this... yeah I checked out his source and he has the following code: <div style="cursor:pointer;"> Insert your regular wiki code here </div>. I know someone else has a crosshair in their page. I don't think you can upload your own, these are standard cursors as far as I know. It's possible that maybe the cursor: option may allow a url for an image but you'll have to do some research on that.
If you hover over this bold text you'll see it in action

Hey there it's dot com, how have you been, can i ask you something, what does this mean:Thank you! The Homestar Runner Wiki raised over $980 in its 2005 Fall Pledge Drive. Unfortunately, we didn't reach our pledge drive goal. You're still welcome to make a donation.

We apologize, but due to circumstances beyond our control, new-user registration and anonymous editing have been disabled. If you are the vandal responsible, please email mail_icon.giftom@hrwiki.org. Thank you.

Also whats your Top 10 Sb emails, and your botton 10?

Nikolce Kocovski 06:55, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

I'll let It's dot com field the favorites, but I can answer your question about the header. I'm not sure which part of it you were asking about, but:
  • The Pledge Drive was a time to encourage users to donate money voluntarily to help pay for the wiki's costs (explained in that link). It's a way of raising money that some organizations use over here, especially public radio. We didn't raise as much money as we had hoped; discussion about that is at HRWiki_talk:2005_Fall_Pledge_Drive#Looking_ahead.
  • We had to stop letting people register as users, or edit pages if they weren't users, because of an attack by a vandal who used over 1,000 usernames to vandalize pages.
  • By the way, I'm not sure which internet browser you're using, but FireFox has a plugin that lets you click on a word to look it up in an online dictionary. I can imagine this being very helpful to people for whom English is not their first language; if there's an English-to-Macedonian online dictionary, you could even customize it to that! —AbdiViklas 03:07, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

A telegramophonic thank you!

Salutations, Sir Dot Com! Stop Thank you for reccomending the user name change! Stop However, it appears that I always have new electronic messages even though none are present in the actual talk area. Stop Can you perhaps suggest a remedy? Stop Thanks again! Stop Sir Strong Bad

I've heard of several people having this problem. I assume you've tried simply refreshing the page? And visiting your talk page by clicking the "new messages" link? If so, I'm guessing the next thing you'd hear from a lot of people is "clear your cache" (seems to be a popular cure-all). You could, of course, make an edit to the page yourself, which should clear it up. —AbdiViklas 03:17, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
AbdiViklas is usually right, but he's wrong in this case. I posted this on your talk page, but I'll put it here for anyone who's just passing by. When we upgraded to MediaWiki 1.5, it introduced a bug in the way the system handles the new messages indicator. Currently, the only way to get the message to go away is to click "unwatch" at the top of your page. This is necessary even if you yourself are the one who edits the page. We have done what we can to make sure the people who design the software are aware of the problem and we hope they will give us a patch to fix it. — It's dot com 03:26, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

More crappy stuff

Hooray to Abdi, but I'd still like to bring this to your attention. The precedent I've seen is to delete the section entirely but I am not the experienced on in these matters. Concerned, --Stux 00:16, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, my first thought was to simply delete his edit, but I thought I remembered something about preferring strike-throughs on talk pages. Plus the "aka Riley" part suggests that maybe they know each other in real life or from elsewhere. (But even if the Col. was making a good-natured in-joke, the wiki isn't the place for it.) —AbdiViklas 00:37, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
My better judgment told me that it should be removed, and I did so accordingly, and moved your reply to his talk page. If I have overstepped my bounds (Dot com, Tom, or any of the other admins) then you may revert my changes, please accept my apologies, and inform me of the proper procedure. I felt it would be best that the comment not be ther in order to not allow things to escalate. Thanks! --Stux 00:42, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
That whole thread was weird. I don't think the user who was accused is technically capable of what he was accused of (unless he's deliberately trying to appear younger than he is). I personally don't have a problem with removing (rather than striking out) things that never should have been here in the first place, and this is probably a case where it's okay to just delteat it. Let me know if anything else develops on this matter. Thanks. — It's dot com 15:40, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
Right; I didn't want to say that on his own talk page, though ("Actually, I don't think someone who can't spell or communicate coherently in writing could do that!"). —AbdiViklas 16:16, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, jeepers. It's dot com's just a-jumpin' up the ladder, eh? Awesome. Anyone will say you deserve it (and everyone probably will, sooner or later. You know how these things spread on talk pages). --DorianGray
Yea, I could see that one coming. I've thought of your technological know how, diplomatic mannar, professionalism, and zeal for the wiki as top knotch bureaucratic quality for some time now. Congratulations man. Thunderbird 01:20, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Absent minded does not begin to describe it...

Oh crap! Did I just do that!? Man I should know better! I was looking at it and went back and forth through things and at some point I forgot I was looking at the archives... grr! I was thinking about reverting both votes, but um, but I guess you left them both to clarify things? I'm starting to think (at least due to my absent-mindedness) that having different background colors for archived stuff would be a good idea to provide a visual cue as to what's archived and what's not. But I see they use the same templates and there's no way that I can think of right away to um... differentiate things without having to retype things. Maybe a big red border to indicate these are the archives? I should be doing my homework right now. --Stux 20:07, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

I left your vote and added one of my own, because it solved a technicality: namely, that version of the item was declined even though it showed more accept votes. By evening out the vote, there are no longer two revisions with the accepts in the lead. What really happened is that those two items were merged and the revision that was winning overwhelmingly was accepted. That whole mess was kind of confusing. As for the archive, I considered making it different colors, and then decided it wasn't worth the trouble. In the five months since we've been using the new format, we've only had two, maybe three, instances of people voting in the archives. Usually they see the big gold banner at the top that says not to vote there. ;) — It's dot com 20:31, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
Gee. Rub it in why don't ya? ;) --Stux 01:18, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

Time zone

I've noticed you going around asking for a general idea of where people live so you can figure out when they're usually awake and whatnot, so I decided to head you off at the pass before you could ask me. I'm a Floridian, but I'm in the Central timezone part. (The Panhandle) - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

The Panhandle's in CST?! (Well at least part of it...) I'm in Michigan, and I'm still in EST (of course we're the furthest west in EST... strike that were the furthest west now that Indiana may be joining us. --Stux 17:05, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, I've found that around here, your time zone has very little bearing on when you edit the wiki. I like knowing where people are from because it's fun to realize that all the quirky little usernames can be traced to real people out there (who themselves are at least as quirky). As my user page says, I'm from Texas, so I'm in the Central time zone (I'm discounting the fact that the absolute western tip of the state (El Paso) is in the Mountain time zone). Thanks for letting me know where you're from! — It's dot com 04:23, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Hehe, cool! I once knew someone from El Paso ... a long time ago. Now, I'm curious -- have you by chance compiled some sort of table and/or computer generated map of the locations of all the wiki-pedians you have interviewed :) --Stux 05:18, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Table, yes. Map, no. ...or at least, not yet. :) — It's dot com 05:20, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Copyrighted Images

Well, now that we're getting rid of all those images from the pages, they should be deleted, yes? Can you do that yourself, or should I find 'em all and put a removed for copyright reasons tag on all of them for you? I ask coz certainly they don't need the tag to be deleted, but it might help you (or any other sysop) find them all in a jiffy. --DorianGray

Two things: is it possible that there might be some caveat of fair use for these images? I mean these pictures have been displayed at the H*R site and we have had a habit of displaying anything and everything from the site. And nevermind on the second thing. Also I missed the discussion :( where did it happen? Oh, I found it. I guess i'm just regurgitating what was said in the discussion. It's just so boring without the pictures... --Stux 05:47, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Boring, perhaps, but that's what the official site is for. Why don't you mark them for deletion, DorianGray (or whoever wants to help). I won't delete them myself. Rather, I'll let another sysop do that. That way, my actions will have been ratified by the community instead of being unilateral. Make sure none of the images are being used as a representative example (which is okay) before you mark them. Thanks. — It's dot com 05:49, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, just in case you didn't see, I marked 'em all. It was kinda fun, actually. Glad to help out (especially when I was gypped out of a couple other projects I promised to you that I'd do). Call me when you need it done again. --DorianGray

Trusted Group

Exactly what things can a user in the trusted group do over a regular user? -- Super Sam 23:12, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Currently nothing. There is no longer any such thing as the trusted group. We created it specifically to allow access until such time as all the malicious usernames could be blocked. Once they were all blocked, regular access was restored and the trusted group was dissolved. If you look in the list of users, the "trusted" label still appears next to various users because of the way the software stores it, but at present there is no mechanism for me to either remove the label from those who already have it or to add it to those who don't. If we ever need to re-enable the group, only then will any of this be imprortant again. — It's dot com 23:30, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Can I figure out if I was in the "trusted group"? (I'm probably hoping a little too much here. :P) - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

IRC Error

Hey, It's dot com. Sorry to bug ya, but I suddenly have an error with IRC. While I was talking earlier, I accidentally hit some key(s) that opened my email inbox in the same screen. I hit back to get back to the chat, which wouldn't work. So I went back to the HRWiki page with the links to sign back in, and it kept erroring, not signing me in and saying that my name was already in use. The exact words of the error is:

Connecting...
Logging in...
-- *** Looking up your hostname...
-- *** Found your hostname, welcome back
-- *** Checking ident
-- *** No identd (auth) response
DorianGray Nickname is already in use.
DorianGray Nickname is already in use.
Error : Closing Link: 127.0.0.1 (Connection Timed Out)
Disconnected from irc.freenode.net

If you can log me out or something, I'd be much appreciative. I even signed off the internet, but that didn't fix it. Nor did trying to sign on to the fanstuff chat. --DorianGray

Sometimes you leave the room but the program thinks you didn't. Eventually the situation rectifies itself, and at this point in time it has. I think if you try again now it will work. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 04:38, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
If you're registered with nickserv, you can always log in with a different nickname and then user "/msg nickserv GHOST <username> <password>" (I think that's the format, you can type "/msg nickserv help GHOST" for help). It'll kill your phantom account and then you can change your nickname with the /nick command (i.e. /nick DorianGray|all_fixed). --Stux 04:49, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Well, I dun even know what nickserv is, so there you go. And it's not yet corrected itself... Still coming with the same error. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow afternoon, when I wake up. Nice to know it's nothing really major, though, right? --DorianGray
Nickserv is a service that allows you to control your own nickname (and not let anyone else use it). Once you are able to log in, just type "/msg nickserv register <password>" (and make up a password of course) and it will register your nickname. Every time you log in just type "/msg nickserv identify <password>" and it will know it's you. Chat clients are good for this cuz they allow you to enter the password so that it can automatically identify you. Anyway once identified you can do all sorts of cool things with your nickname. As of right now, yeah your nickname's still logged in and hasn't timed out. Tommorrow it should, but you can always use a different name until tommorrow. --Stux 04:57, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
'Kay. Just thought I'd tell people that it's all fixed now. Thanks for all the help. --DorianGray

Thanks! I've decided I'm going to make a message for all major holidays. You've reminded me, though, that it's time to take down the turkey decorations. — It's dot com 06:46, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
In my elementary methods (music) class today we were discussing abortive attempts to recognize/celebrate everyone's heritages and December-vicinity holidays. I realized that, although I see the importance of connecting kids with their heritages, maybe it's more important that they learn about other heritages; once you make it a matter of "your music" or "your" holiday it gets personal. I mention all this because I came to the conclusion that in the interests of recognizing the celebration without necessarily personally owning it, I'm going to start wishing everybody a happy {blank} on every obscure and minor holiday I can find. Accordingly, happy Mauritanian and Albanian Independence Day(s). Oh wait, it's past midnight—happy Electronic Greetings Day. (I kid you not!) —AbdiViklas 07:07, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
I have long maintained that the solution to the problem is just to have everyone celebrate everything. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 07:14, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

My Watchlist

Hi Dot com, I'm just curious: I just noticed that for some reason I cannot add my talk page to my watch list? (Although my User page is on my watch list.) I'm curious to know, why is that? --Stux 17:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

It's part of this bug, which is the "new messages" bug. If you want, you should log in there and vote for that bug, so that they will give it priority to be fixed. — It's dot com 17:24, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Did I miss something? How does a bug go from "unresolved" to "it simply vanished"? or even "works for me" status? I was a little confused when I first read it, I still am, unless the person was referring to MediaWiki's 1.5.3 release. Unfortunately I couldn't find a detailed changelog without having to download the distro. I'll have to look at it later. Anyway I just wanted to let you know the change in status and ask about it. --Stux 00:15, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Diff Problems

Is it just me or is the media wiki edit conflict fix thingy, actually being buggy? Seems to me like certain things got overwritten during the frenzy. And I don't think our editors would've simply ignored edit conflict warnings and would have just haphazardly overwritten stuff. I did find a problem when editing the same page myself with two windows at once, but I thought it was just a problem when the same user did the edit. I fear I may be wrong. --Stux 05:01, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

I'd reason a guess that it's just users not being careful when they get an edit conflict warning. But you might want to direct your questions at the users invloved as to whether they actually got warnings or the edits just went through. -- Tom 05:26, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Although, Joshua made consecutive edits at one point, and stuff was lost between the two versions. Strange... — It's dot com 05:35, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
I have posted my question to Joshua to see his take on this. --Stux 05:39, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Hi guys. I just got a response back from Joshua, and it indeed seems that something is amiss:
I don't recall making those changes, and I never got an edit conflict on "portrait". - Joshua 12:29, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
So... strange, huh? --Stux 16:19, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
I was going through bugzilla and i think that this bug may be the one we're looking at or related. --Stux 16:33, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
I was reading the bug report and came to comment #28 (previously all other bug comments focused on the problem centering around the same user doing the changes with two windows), and i think this paragraph describes what may have happened here, (however I'd probably like to ask Joshua again if he did anything like this, which I doubt, so I still think we have new behavior to report to this bug):
In other words, when I am editting, all my edits are made in reference to the version I opened for editting (call it version 1). Then while I am editting someone else makes some changes and saves as version 2. Now when I save the first time, it notices that someone else has made an edit and tries to merge them. If this succeeds, then we arrive at version 3A. Now, being dumb, I notice that I misspelled "celebration", so I hit the back button, quickly fix it and save again. This time the software notices version 3A, sees that I also made that edit and consequently, it cancels all edit conflicts. Since I used the back button, my edit is still based on version 1. So this time when it saves, the conflict with version 2 is ignored. Hence, whatever changes which were made in that version are dropped from the new version 3B.
--Stux 22:37, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
Believe it or not, that explanation makes sense. I don't know whether it's right or how to fix it from a technical standpoint, but the lesson here is: never click "back" to move through the software when editing. Always click "edit" anew. — It's dot com 22:46, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
It wouldn't be hard to have two people test this while on IRC. I'd be interested in seeing the results. -- Tom 23:13, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
Confirmed and reported. Good work Stux. -- Tom 00:08, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! I also wanted to let you know I asked Joshua again about the steps he took in editing and this is the response i got:
Hey! I wanted to ask you... yesterday when you were doing your edits, do you recall if at any moment you hit the back button to go back and fix edits? --Stux 05:25, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
Umm... I'm not sure. I might have, but I usually don't. - Joshua 13:54, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
I hope this gets the ball rolling on the fixes. --Stux 20:55, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Something in common

Greetings there it's dot com, how have you been, i've been doing great, i saw on your user page and we have something in common, i too like simpsons and family guy, but i have a couple of questions(is there another word for question) regarding this and other unrelated topics:

  1. don't you like the recent episodes of simpsons?
  2. don't you like a cartoon made by the simpsons called futurama?
  3. what have you been up to?
  4. do you know a user by the name of elvis?
  5. did you have a bulling problem in school?

Nikolce Kocovski 11:27, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

My, Nikolce, what interesting questions you have.
  1. I don't like the new Simpsons episodes. I haven't liked them since about the time Maude died and Barney got sober, around six years ago. When the show first aired, the episodes had a completely different feel. The plots were more straightforward, a lot of the humor was biting and satirical, and the characters had heart and soul. One of my favorite episodes (#7F19) is when Lisa's teacher thinks she has Lyme disease and a substitute teaches her class. *sigh*
  2. Yes, I like Matt Groening's other main creation, Futurama. Being set in the future and largely in space means they can get away with more, and overall I appreciate at as a silly diversion kind of show. I'm not an avid fan or anything, but if I happen to catch an episode here or there on Cartoon Network, then I'll watch.
  3. Well, besides work, getting ready for Christmas, and working on the wiki, I'd say not much.
  4. No, I've never heard of a user by that name before today.
  5. Heh, do you mean was I a bully, or was I bullied by other kids? Either way, the answer is no, not really. Not more than normal kid stuff. What makes you ask?
