Question! What kind of bear is best- Oh, no, wait, I mean, would you be interested in a Homestarrunner TV series? I know I'd be all for it, especially if it took the form of something like Animaniacs where it was broken up into a few different cartoons for the half hour. I think it could be awesome.

Thoughts?

I dont think that would be a good idea becuase they have much more freedom on the web than they would on tv. It would also have to be on like TBS or something becuase kids networks dont say crap and other risque things on it.

Aw, I was just about to make this topic! Well, anyways, I have a list of pros and cons...

Pros

-It would be awesome to see them on TV
-They would get more recognition and more people would know about the site

Cons

-People would call The Chaps a sell-out
-The show would be focused on the gags rather than the characters themselves (TBC stated this themselves)
-They would have to work longer hours on it, and the toons would be lower-quality
-Some things I can't imagine seeing on TV (e.g Teen Girl Squad)
-They wouldn't have full control of the show, as it would have been their first series
-Mike and Matt themselves were given the chance twice (by Adult Swim and Comedy Central), and they refused both offers

So yeah... I think H*R would be better as a web series.

Pro: If they were on TV, they'd be forced to get episodes out on a schedule.

I keed, I keed.

Yes it would be more work, but the toons would be HIGHER quality. After all, they'd have a team. You can't make a TV show with two people, that's just impossible. Working 24/7 wouldn't get you that much work done in a week.

But yeah, you make an excellent point about the control issue. They'd have to be very selective about a contract if they did do this, outside of funding it themselves (possible, but expensive). I didn't think of that, good point.

On an actual taking this seriously note, I'm not really sure how Homestar on the tube would play out. A recent episode of Family Guy showed me that the creator(s) don't always get the control over their show they should. It would be great if the Bros. weren't asked to make any changes and they could produce it as they wished... it seems too good to be true though.

I rather watch Homestar on the web! If they put it on TV, I think it wouldn't be all successful.

I would LOVE it on TV! You guys are kinda wrong about having to put it on Comedy Central or Adult Swim, though. My fighter against me: That show thats not on Comedy Central or Adult Swim, I can't remember it's name. It's on Cartoon Network, And I'm just guessing the name here.. "Lights, Drama, Action?!" I don't know.... with the fat guy with the t-shirt that has a maple leaf on it, and two girls that have matching clothes, and it's like a ballerina suit thats white black and pink, and a goth girl, And a hot boy they probably copied from LOST, Sawyer. he looks EXACTLY like Sowyar.

Well JKR... I can see where you're coming from but think of it this way:
I believe that if a TV producer saw H*R they would immediatly look at the animation style and dump it on some kids channel where TBC would have to adapt it for kids (for instance no more references to 30 year old video games).
Another problem is that flash is meant for computers and even though the H*R dvds look fine on TV I'm pretty sure that TBC would be forced to use another animation style.

I think I'd like to see a TV show by TBC, but it shouldn't be H*R. If they make a different TV show and it flops, they can say "OK, let's forget about that and move on" - but if they make an H*R TV show and it flops, no-one new will ever watch the site again. It'd be like, "You should see this site! It's called Homestar Runner!" "What, that crappy show? No way!" Whereas, if the TV show is a success, it doesn't matter whether it's H*R or not, because existing H*R fans will watch anyway because it's TBC! So I don't think H*R should be a TV show, but that doesn't mean TBC should stay away from TV altogether.

Ah, but several successful shows have been created in nothing but Flash. Do you know Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends? It was a brilliant animated series on Cartoon Network and was done 100% in Flash. Total Drama Island is another, plus Luca Dore (is that how you spell it?) and a bunch of others. Flash is moving in all sorts of directions, and TV is certainly one of them.

I get your point about it being strictly for kids based on the style, though. I think most executives would indeed see it that way. Again, that's why you'd have to be very careful about whatever contract you went with. I think it could still work...

When I think "Homestar Runner TV", I think, "DIC Entertainment/Cookie Jar strikes deal with creators of popular web cartoon".

Yeah, the Chapps were smart not to try to get HR on-air. (Didn't they actually reject an offer?) I believe so because of what Kevin Smith told his fans about the CLERKS animated series; if he'd done a web series instead of trying to pander it to TV networks (& the wrong ones to boot), that series would have gone on for years instead of one short season. I also believe that being aired on TV absolutely RUINED Pucca.

I believe that at one point they pitched the idea to Cartoon Network, but were denied, and have since decided that the web is the only medium that they're comfortable with.

The only Homestar toon that ended up on TV was Experimental Film.
It should stay that way, I think.
