A friend of mine recently committed suicide, and it got me thinking,'What happens when you commit suicide?" I'm wondering this from a spiritual point of view. I know that the Church used to say that it was a mortal sin, but now has said that a person is not in their right mind at the time they sommit suicide. What I want to know is, what do you think happens? I know that we have a few members of the church that belong here, so I want to know what they think.

I cannot answer that question. I do not know the condition of your friend's soul at the time of his death. Nor does the Bible itself give an ultimatum on it. I do not believe that God's mercy will exclude a person on the sole basis of a suicide, though (although I wouldn't push that point with someone considering suicide at the time). Most of the arguments are based on prohibitions of murder, but even murder can be forgiven (just ask King David and the Apostle Paul, both murderers who repented and were forgiven).

I am deeply sorry about your friend. I cannot imagine what grief you must be feeling right now. Just know this: whatever else, God himself, the same one who wept at Lazarus' tomb, also feels your grief.

I don't know for sure, but if you like, I could give you the Jewish standpoint...

Very sorry to hear that, btw.

Damn, sorry to hear that.

Personally, I reckon what happens to people who commit suicide is the exact same thing that happens to everyone else.

Yeah, that's what The Church used to state, but now they've changed their teachings.

What is the Jewish standpoint? I never learned about suicide in Hebrew school.

Yeah, what are you talking about? I'm sure there's more than one Jewish person on earth that has committed suicide...

What about King Saul?

My Hebrew professsor in college argued that Samson committed suicide, but in my own thinking, he was more of a martyr than a typical suicide. That is, he sacrificed himself to protect his people. That's different than killing yourself because you don't want to live anymore.

Judas Iscariot was the disciple that betrayed Jesus to the Temple authorities. When he realized that the Temple authorities were going to kill him, he killed himself out of shame.

I don't think it matters the reasons for killing yourself, it's still considered suicide.

It does matter. Some guy who overdoses on pills because he can't stand the pressures of everyday life is entirely different from the guy who singlehandedly takes out an enemy army and dies in the process.

Besides, you might want to take a look at that word "typical" in there.

But it didn't say "typically involving not wanting to live anymore" it just said "intentionally killing oneself." I'll just say that Sampson was a martyr who committed suicide.

I am very sorry about your friend, ramrod. But, what made his life so bad that he killed himself?

He was going through a lot of stress. And right before he died he had a huge argument with his dad, which got him kicked out of the house. He was a cool guy too. He was the one that no-one would ever expect to die so young.

I get that felling with some of my friends too, you see all the dateline specials about a kid that burned so bright and ended up fizzleing out because of drugs or stress or other stuff.

I've contemplated (and actually attempted) suicide before, and I've never gotten a clear, solid answer if I'm going to hell if it actually works,

If there's any doubt as to your ultimate destination, I would advise against suicide. Actually, I advise against it, anyway. Nothing is so bad that you should commit suicide. NOTHING.

It's not like I've stabbed or shot myself or anything. Just attempts to suffocate myself in my bed, & swallowing a buncha toothpaste (CONTACT POISON CONTROL IMMEDIATELY). Stupid methods, nothing serious.

Wow. Feebleness. Maybe that means that I'm really not taking suicide so seriously.

Leaving the earth by suicide is no different to me from leaving it any other way. God wouldn't treat someone who committed suicide any differently than someone who died unintentionally. Personally, I was suicidal a while back, and I'm not ruling it out as a future option if things get worse than they were.

Ramrod, BTG, first of all I would like to say that I am very sorry for your friend.

My opinion is that if the person believed in God, then he will forgive him. Many people in the Bible like David committed sins and they were forgiven. I think your friend will be in Heaven if he was saved.
