100% agreed. I can't take it half open, but every time my dad or mum forgets to close it at night, I have to get up and close it myself. It pisses me off too.

NUH-UH!!!

Wait... Remember when we were young and that was the all-powerful way to deny/stop something?

Imagine if that were still true.
A bunch of hippies would be protesting, calling for Bush's impeachment and he walks out and goes "NUH-UH!!".

Another pet peeve to add to my list is when USB ports are in the front portion of laptops. Since I have little space to work with for my laptop, its mile-long mouse cord dangles freely off the side of the desk. This results in my tiny mouse falling off my laptop on a regular basis because of the extra weight the cord adds to it.

Ok if that was the case, then why did 51 people say "Keep them going?"

Do we even have 51 regular users?

My thoughts are that most of the people who voted are upper-forum only people or new users who just said "oh a poll lol" and voted keep it just for the heck of it.

Yes. (around 70 active ones from that list, though I haven't really updated it recently)

A new pet peeve of mine is when users debate over whether or not people care about the Forum Awards. :P

Pet peeve: I hate it when people say that the Chinese word for "crisis" is a combination of danger + opportunity. It isn't.

Another linguistic rant (one that I might have already said here; I'm not going to bother checking): I hate it when people jokingly suggest that the plural of "virus" is "virii". The fact that it wasn't the real Latin plural isn't what bothers me. What bothers me is that it indicates ignorance of how Latin does form plurals. There are no Latin words where -us becomes -ii in the plural. The -us must become -i, yielding "viri". The only times where -ii is seen in the plural is because the singular ended with -ius (like "radius"); the first "i" is simply the same "i" that comes before the -us. Some people do the same thing with the word for a certain body part, changing -is to -ii. This is even worse, because no Latin words change -is to either -i or -ii. I think if you're going to play on words by making up plurals, you should at least get it right. No, you shouldn't have to learn Latin just to make a joke, but that "virii" is nonsense was obvious to me long before I ever thought about learning Latin. All you have to do is notice that there are no words ending with -us or -is that change to -ii in the plural.

In case you're wondering, Latin didn't actually have a plural for "virus", because it was used as a mass noun, so the singular form also functioned as the plural. However, if it did have a plural, it would probably be "vira". (Some have suggested that it would be "viri", which clashes with the real Latin word "viri" meaning "men", but I think all neuter Latin nouns take -a in the plural.)

I proposed the question near the start of the awards because there was a discussion on whether the awards should continue or not.

While there are linguistic rants on the page...

I hate it when someone finds out that I'm learning foreign languages, and act as though they are useless.

News flash, America, not everyone in the world speaks english. And even in places where the people are bilingual, you might find that you get types of respect if you know the native language.

I'm not staying in staatsburg, NY for the rest of my life, and I'm not getting a crappy job. I was looking into foreign language-based jobs online today, and the base salaries are amazing.

Oh well. some day, these very kids will hire me.

Translation can be a client based business, so if they want something translated or a tour guide or something, they may very well be at my mercy some day, but not vice versa.

Pet peeve: when people use an apostrophe instead of apostrophe-s after the letter x. Example from Wikipedia (which I naturally fixed): "Unix' ELF shared libraries are supported to an extent using the GDC compiler."

And, of course, apostrophe misuse in general gets on my nerves, too.

I don't like it when people put just an apostrophe over a name that ends in s (ex James' instead of James's). That's only okay in rare instances, and for some reason it seems like in those rare instances (e.g. Jesus' is correct and not Jesus's), people STILL always get it wrong...
