[OOC: It appears that some of Marcus's stupidity has rubbed off on me. Carry on. XD]

"I see that gate, Mister Tem!" Marcus looked back and smelled for Prosper. Good, he made it in.

Narulin said: "Alert! Hostile magic detected. There is a metal gate ahead that has been ensorcered. Do not attempt to open the gate or it will set off a Cloudkill spell. However, it can be bashed open without setting off the trap."

Tem stopped in his tracks: "Who said that? Oh, it's your ring. You know, it's always a surprise for me when that thing talks. The thoughts that precede words don't resonate in the Ether for it like they do with you guys."

Micheal said: "Cloudkill, eh? I've head of it. Dangerous spell. Indiscriminately harms or kills anyone in the area of effect. Hrm... anyone here immune to poison?"

"With the possible exception of Taryn..." Eruantian inserted "I don't think anyone here would be. However, I could just summon an ice hammer and bash it open like Narluin suggested, that is if no one minds the ear-splitting racket and ice clouds."

Taryn and Acedia managed to slip into line behind Eruantian. Taryn's natural slight luminescence made Acedia's life easier - she had both Eruantian's glow and Taryn's to see by, since this far back from the Fool's Glow spell it was considerably darker. When they reached the gate, Acedia busied herself removing the small rocks that had seen fit to jump into her shoes. Next town they reached, she decided, she'd get some new shoes. These - these were barely more than slippers with reinforced soles. Not at all suitable for such travel. And Acedia had a feeling this wouldn't be the last cave they explored, either.

"I'm actually very vulnerable to poison," Taryn said with a nonchalant shrug, not seeming to care about the potential ramifications for revealing such a weakness. "Bash away. Maybe let Marcus help, just to ensure that the gate opens. If it doesn't shatter under both your hammer and his...body, then we're simply not getting any further."

Captain Sealem said: "Very well. I say Mister Marcus should have a go at bending the bars. Less noise that way, better chance for us to continue undetected. What say ye, good corporal? Are you up to the challenge?"

Prosper stopped up at the gates, which the party had just come upon. He looked at it closely, trying to determine any quicker way of getting through.

Before Marcus had a chance to speak up, Eruantian took that order for himself. He was wearing a ring of strength enhancement, after all, so he might as well use it. He locked his hands onto the bars as tightly as he could and applied all the force he could muster.

The bars stared to shake... the bars stared to shimmy... and the then the bars snapped in two.
No death-dealing poison gas cloud was released.

"No need to strain yourself this time, Marcus. I've got this one covered." Despite Eruantian not being able to read people very well, he could quite easily tell by the others' facial expressions that no one saw that coming.

Marcus made a jump at Eruantian, but the Captain stepped in to prevent him from giving the Half-Elf a good slashing.

"You can do it this time." The Lizzard crossed his arms and flexed. "Just this once. But next time you need some REA: muscle, you know who to call. At least let me try it first before some magic ring helps you."

"What? Afraid of I'll steal your thunder?" Eruantian said with a smirk "Very well, if it makes you feel better." Truth be told, Eruantian no longer feared Marcus. The new rings made him feel more than capable of handling him should he lose his temper.

Marcus didn't say anything; he only growled a bit and hissed his tongue.

Are you ASKING for a fight? He thought. I can beat those silly magic rings any day.

<GM's Note: Ring wielding Marcus, I'm afraid. But don't forget, Eruantian is only stronger while he's wearing his strength enhancing ring. In D&D terms, it gives you 25 STR, while Marcus has a natural 20 STR (He's extra-buff, even for his species). Without his ring, Eruantian only has 10 STR, which is about average for a human. To compare, Maria has 15 STR, Micheal has about 8 STR, Captain Sealem has 16, Taryn is about 18, Prosper has 9 STR (which is amazingly good for someone his age), Maxwell has 14 STR, and Farnham is a 13. Andrew has 18 STR and Horin has 17 STR. Quinn has 18, Aceidia has 15, Coren has 18 STR, and Tem has 10 STR. Your average Drow Warrior probably has 12 or 13 STR, but Drow Elite are buffed up by strength-enhancing magic (either temporary from a time-limited spell or permanently from ritual magic). Also remember that Marcus's naturual armor and constitution are excellent, so he can take a lot of damage before he will fall. Eruantian, on the other had, has powerfully good armour while he wears the ring, but his natural constitution is still only what you would expect for someone of his background (that is to say, it's nothing special.) If someone manages to get an attack through Eruantian's magical armour it will disable the ring's powers, which means it will probably kill him outright. Marcus, on the other hand, just might survive such an attack because his natural constitution is better.
NOTE THAT THE ABOVE NUMBERS ARE FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES ONLY: If you don't like how they reflect on your character, then they're not cannon. 'Nuff said.>

Tem said: "You know, that gate never used to be locked. That's new... I wonder what else is different. Anyways, from here we either go down into the mines or we can get into the city. I think we should go up, hopefully we can hook up with some sort of resistance fighters. I'm sure there's some High Flayers who can help us. You know, tell us where things are kept, how many guards are where, who the big-shots are, that sort of thing."

Maxwell said: "Well, sure that'd help, but the place is probably crawling with Drow. Don't you think they'd recognize us?"

Micheal piped up: "Actually, I was looking at Aclabar's book while I walked, and there's an illusion spell buried in margins. Looks like he scribbled it in himself. If I can learn it, it should be able to disguise one us as a Drow."

Andrew said: "Just one?"

Micheal said: "I'm afraid so. It's not a mass-effect spell."

Marcus, predictably, volunteered to go to the city and round up some fighters.

"I'm no good with magicks, so I dunno how good of a Drow I can be. But I can prolly find some guys who can help us out."

Prosper watched the almost-confrontation between Eruantian and Marcus with growing unease. Eruantian was becoming more and more powerful, and it was starting to mess with his head, and if he got TOO cocky it could mean trouble for all of us.

Prosper would've broken into the conversation, but at that point he didn't know what to say. He'd be willing to go, but he wasn't sure how the other's would react to the idea. He was begining to remember his place.

Horin cared little for the well-being of the lizzardman, the creature sort of disgusted him. So... Uncivilized. He did, however, not want to see the half-Elf hurt.
"I get the feeling, then, I wouldn't make a great Drow." Horin said, chuckling.

<Breaking in here, but does anyone remember what skill I choose for my last level up? I don't really pay detailed attention to those, but it gives me a good perspective. It was stealth-like wasn't it? I wen't looking, but gave up.>

"I've essentially spent my life sneaking into places unnoticed," Taryn piped up. "I could go. You wouldn't need to waste a spell on me, though, I don't think." It was true in principal -- that was what Taryn was, after all. Whether or not she could still disguise herself as a convincing Drow was debatable. It's one thing to look like a Drow but something else entirely to act like one, and it had been a long time since she'd been among them.

Beyond the gate was a chamber about tweenty feet by tweenty feet square, with a staircase bounded by another locked iron gate at the top.

Micheal said: "I bet I could disguse Prosper. He's already good at sneaking around, and that amulet of his should still protect him from the Drow while he's up there. I think can even make him look like a adult Drow warrior, if I'm reading this spell right."

Maxwell said: "Maybe one of us should go along and pretend to be his prisoner."

Captain Sealem shook his head and said: "I don't know about that idea; The Drow don't normally take prisoners. It would call too much attention to us if we went up there pretending to be prisoners. Too many questions would be asked."

Maxwell nodded his head: "OK then. When can you do the disguise spell, Micheal?"

Micheal said: "I need to sleep first. I can do it first thing in the morning."

Maxwell said: "Is it safe to stay here that long, Tem?"

Tem said: "No, but nothing we're doing around here is particularly safe. I guess we should be relitively safe to sleep in this room. This part of the complex was secret in my day, but like I said the gates weren't here when I knew this place. We may have some uninvited guests, or we may not . I really don't know."

Maxwell said: 'OK, then. We'll sleep here for the night. I'll take first watch, Marcus you take second, and Farnham can take third."

Prosper was surprised. Him? They wanted him? The boy was immediately exicted and incredibly anxious. It was pretty dangerous after all. He said; "Sure I can do it. But he's right, sleep first."
Prosper then headed to bed.

The sleep-period passed uneventfully. In the morning, Maxwell passed around the "Never Ending Sandwich" for breakfast. It was good. And available in unlimited quantities.
Micheal made fresh water for everyone. Then he made Prosper look like an Adult Male Drow warrior, complete with dark-mail armour and a transformed spear.

<So, does he just look like a Drow, or does the illusion carry over into sound, and smell as well (I'm also assuming I don't gain racial Drow abilities)? Oh, and does he experience the sense of being taller? I hate posting without playing but I'd like the information.>

<GM's Explanation: It's an Illusion spell, not a Polymorph spell, so Prosper isn't actually a Drow now. The spell just grants the illusion of him looking, smelling, tasting (if you lick him), and feeling like a Drow. As far as Prosper haveing the sensation of being taller, the answer is yes; The illusion works both ways, apparently.>

Micheal just said: "The spell will last until the next sunrise, so you've got exactly that long to spy on the city above before you've got to be back here. Good luck, my friend."

Prosper looked down. Everything seemed smaller, and he felt (although he knew it wasn't true) somewhat stronger. He examined his new, taller spear, which was of a darker wood and had a longer head than his regular one, not that that would matter, since it was only an illusion.

Tucking his amulet into his mail, Prosper thanked and good-byed the party and headed up towards the city.

While walking, Prosper contemplated what he was doing. He was walking into enemy territory with a temporary disguise (and here he reminded himself of the time limit) to try and find help for a possible rebellion that they would lead in an effort to (once again) thwart the plans of the Drow.

And why was he doing this? It wasn't that he didn't want to, or that he didn't think he could, but Prosper, up to this point, had considered himself a small cog in the parties' machine. He had begun to feel more powerful, but recently had been reminded of his place. Now once again, he was at the forefront, and he realized that, despite everything, each of the party, great or small, had a role to play and that eventually each of them would get their chance to shine.

And this is your moment. he thought.

The boy also realized how much certain members of the group, the leaders and Sealem, and even Micheal, to some extent, beleived in him. He wasn't quite so sure, however, about the others.
So, with his mind wandering (which is probably not a good thing when your on a mission behind enemy lines) Prosper, the rouge Psudo-Drow worrier, walked through the darkness.

Marcus didn't see anything during his watch, except for a couple tasty squirrels.

Tem joined Prosper at the top of the stairs and said: "Alright, here we go. Follow me. If anyone asks, I'm your slave. I'll translate the Drowish language for you in your head. And before you ask, no I don't speak Drow. When you read someone's mind, it all comes out in your mother tounge, regardless of what language the guy is thinking in. So i'll read the Drow's minds and then pass it on to you."

<GM's Poking: If Acedia and/or Taryn want to join Prosper and Tem, now would be a good time to speak up.>

Taryn, in retrospect, didn't really feel like make-believing she was a Drow right now, but Acedia was getting a little fidgety and so she decided to go along as well, putting on the rat medallion once again and scurrying after drow!Prosper, crawling up the side of his leg and settling on his shoulder. She would've climbed up onto Tem, but felt she could hide more easily if necessary on Prosper. She was only along for something to do, but who knows - there may be a use for her, as she, too, has experience sneaking around where she would not ordinarily be welcome.
