I kinda always surmised that the real definition of "emo" was someone who responded to environmental stimuli with a strong emotional reaction (in whatever direction--happy, sad, angry, joyful, etc.). It could be seen as someone who is emotionally unstable, and most people just concentrate on the negative emotions and the reactions associated with those emotions when they think of someone who is "emo." I kinda figured that this definition would fit the reason why most emos are teens and preteens, since this is the stage in life in which people go through many drastic changes, wherein emotional stress can become high.

Flagrantly wrong, dude. Everything emo HAS to go against the mainstream. Otherwise, it doesn't fit in with the "nobody understands me!" attitude. How to make an Emo kid's head explode: Tell him that nonconformity is just conformity of a different kind.

Yeah. I believe the emo going around right now is just a fad. These emos are just influenced by MTV.

Non conformity is a non conformity. If someone does something because a lot of other people people are doing it, it's not non conformity, and if they say otherwise, they're either lying or mistaken. That's the joke of the goth kids in South Park.

But were they there when they sacked Rome?

Okay. Strong Bad and Strong Sad are watching Limozeen: "but they're in space!"

TEEG DOUGLAND: I'm afraid I've got some bad news, boys. We've been knocked off the charts in the Forbidden Zone by an alternative rock band.

PERRY: But their bassist is a girl!

MARY: And the drummer's got short hair!

LARRY: And the lead singer wears glasses!

{Cut back to the couch. Strong Bad throws the remote at Strong Sad.}

STRONG SAD: Ow! What was that for?

STRONG BAD: For you and your kind destroying metal! Chuck Taylor-wearing, low self-esteemers...

(From the transcript at the wiki)

He's not talking about emo people, he's talking about musos and teenagers and alternative people. It's band geeks and musos who wear Chuck's. I just bought me some all black chucks the other day, and I hate all these emo crap! So... um yeah... I'm a muso! Hooray!

I think it's cute that the band geeks tried to come up with a name for themselves. "Muso." Hehehehehehe. How amusoing.

Note: I heart band geeks. I just think people are funny.

Strong Bad was talking about low self esteemers. Sounds pretty emo to me.

Muso and band geek describe different things, I think.

Uh, guys, there's no way to define emo. Emo is, at the end of the day, "music emos like." I mean, what the heck do Dashboard Confessional and Norma Jean have in common, anyway?

You don't get to decide how a word enters the vernacular.

Aye, you are correct. If I did get to design the vernacular, I would just declare that emo never be used as a noun and everybody would be happy. But since I do not, I must resort to slapping people who say things that sound stupid, and emo as a noun sounds very, very stupid.

What about when people use nouns as verbs? Like in ARROW'D! or SWORD'D! or LADY-ING!

Usually I'm cool with that, as long as it makes sense. I could probably even deal with emo as a verb, like, "My girlfriend's brother invited himself in and just emoed at me for an hour..."

(Also, I find it delicious that the noun 'verb' has been turned into a verb, i.e. verbing. That's so meta.)

ooooh jeeez. there's so many misconceptions here, folks. i'm sorry. my head is about to explode.

emo is not about glasses.

emo is not about chucks.

emo is not about cutting, or black hoodies.

(and it isn't outdated)

it's a genre of music, above all--remember? and it's doesn't have to be anti-mainstream but that certainly does help. but emo music and by extension emo kids are all about emotion (duh) usually, those happen to be love songs and things about anguish and the like. it's really an inaccurate label because honestly, all good music is about some kind of emotion or another. even if that emotion is anger or happiness (ones that emo tends to stay away from, but not always.) real emo bands are stuff like Dashboard, and old Death Cab and Fugazi and Further Seems Forever. A lot of this new stuff like "the academy is..." and ohhh dang what's that other one... lots of makeup (wait there's like a hundred of that) are just another type of prepackaged crap that so similar to things like the Backstreet Boys that it hurts.

This is totally true, emo is a genre of music, and people who are called 'emo' (As an adjective, Jonesey, plz dnt slp mi) are just people who enjoy that music.
I just don't like those kind of people who wear all black and have the hair and the clothes because they think they're being all different and original and alternative, and the best way to do that is to look exactly like another large group of people.
But, if they want to do that, I respect their choice, if they feel they're being a part of something or whatever.
I also don't really like the bands/songs that have what can be decribed as 'emo' lyrics, because after a while they all start to sound the same, I like music that gives you a new perspective on things or a new idea or whatever, not the same thing repeated over and over.
But this is just my opinion, and I wouldn't be surprised if others do not agree, and you're free to do that.

What do you think about emos? not the general stereotype of ppl with black hair and stuff, but in the sence of the word emotional.

Dude, everyone is emotional. It's part of being human. Not all of us are so self-absorbed that we only think that our problems are the only ones that matter and refuse to see the good in life.
