I also need a good graphical person to make us some moderately cool looking banners or antipixel buttons, whatever. Something to show participation. If you wish to do that, go ahead, I'm not accepting applications.

I fully support the spirit of legibility! As long as the campaign is about promoting clarity of communication through the rules of language, (rather than promoting spelling and grammar for their own sakes) I'm in.

Do I actually have to correct people's grammar and stuff, or is this just a statement of principle?

This still sounds like a very bad idea. How can you be sure some people are not just going to go around yelling and nitpicking about every little thing to everyone?

Ah, this is what I've been trying to say and ask, but could never get it to sound...civil. (thanks keet!) It's just hard to tell what the goals of this thing are exactly, and as a budding linguist I want to make sure I don't align myself with strict prescriptivists since I know that's a failed way of thinking about language. Especially since the formal rules of English grammar most people learn are way out of date and the spelling of English could use some chaos so that maybe when the dust clears the letters would actually match the sounds like in... every other language with an alphabet.

Please tell us what exactally we are doing, besides saying "make cool banners.".

Now, I'm afraid I can't make it any clearer. We are not here to nitpick. That would be annoying to everyone. We're here as a sort of force to increase awareness. We function in the same sort of way as a grammar textbook, as in, you can read/hear it, or you can not read/hear it. We're just trying to tell people that using proper and/or better grammar would be nice and helps us to understand the person's postings and meanings a bit clearer.

The basic principle, or Prime Directive, is:

We are not about correcting, but informing.

So it wouldn't be like calling people out every time they use incorrect grammar, but maybe creating a FAQ for new forum users on grammar that they could read when they join, or that people who are often illegible could be directed to? Or something similar? I guess I'm just saying "informing, not correcting" still doesn't really say what this group does. Or is that something for the leadership committee that's being formed?

Sorry to come in and be difficult, but this could be right up my alley, but I don't like to join anything without knowing what I'm joining.

I think what we want to know is: do we just get put on this list, or are we supposed to [s]correct[/s] inform people by posting replies or by PMing them? Are we just promoting an overall awareness through messages in sigs and stuff? What action do we take, specifically?

Inverse Tiger, I like that idea! An FAQ would be great.

it could direct people to websites that have more detailed info on grammar and spelling, commonly misspelled words and the like. It could also have some general spelling rules like

"i before e except after c"

I can't think of what else might be in there. Anyone have any ideas?

Ugh, that's a horrible rule. There are more exceptions to the rule than words it actually applies to.

The FAQ idea is nice. I think the leadership committee is going to work on this. I have some ideas.
