"Don't worry. We're going to an Herbalist who will give us some Wolfsbane, which will surely help us out against the Dire Wolf. May I introduce you to our leader?"

Marcus walked into the dining room & got Maxwell's attention. "Sir Maxwell, this is..." he turned around, "well, I don't know your name. I'm Marcus, by the way."

"Oh, you must not have caught it before. My names Prosper, they call me the lucky one, think you'll need some on your quest?"he shook Maxwells hand."I think someone else wants to talk to you too," he turned to the girl who had been spying on them.

Wait, you're all after a wolf? It takes ALL of you to take care of one wolf?" Tess asked incredulously, snatching her stuff away from Drek. "Don't you think that's sort of overkill? I mean, unless you guys are all really stupid or something. I guess it might be one of those 'how many paladins does it take to re-light a torch' situations."

Marcus laughed. "This isn't an ordinary wolf! It's a Dire Wolf! 4 feet tall at the shoulder, 9 feet long and 800 pounds, with long, black deeth and HUGE spikes along its spine. Dire Wolves have the blackest of fur, so it's nearly impossible to see one at night. No walk down the road, m'lady."

"I see. So are you getting a reward to do this, or are you just providing this service out of the goodness of your sweet little hearts?" Tess inquired, a gleam in her eye. Oh she knew there was a market for monster killing... she generally preferred the standard pickpocketing and street robbery to adventures but with a group this large, personal risk was less at stake. Maybe it was worth her consideration... not to mention she'd enjoy a bit of company.

<OOC: i realize some of this is repetetive but i'm trying to remain in character and give Tess a reason to tag along >

"Well, I don't know if there will be any money involved. I like the adventure!" Marcus grinned.

"Ah, right." Tess nodded, not entirely convinced. She remained where she was, apparently not intending to leave despite having gotten her weapons back.

Maxwell and Farnham had heard the comotion and had caught up with Tess and the rest of the group. He said: "I'm Maxwell and this is my brother Farnham. We're the ones who commisioned the expedition to slay the Dire Wolf. We could use some extra help on this quest, and I suppose having a theif on our side might come in handy. Anyone who joins us gets a cut of whatever treasure we aquire. We'd also outfit you wioth any weapons, armor or gear you might reasonably need... but this town doesn't have much in the way of shopping. I don't think they even have a blacksmith or a fletcher. Oh, and I'll pay for our meals and lodging. I won't lie to you, this is liikely to be a hazardous quest. We've alredy survived an earthquake and a banditry ambush led by an Ogre-Mage. It's likely to get harder the farther into the forest we go. We do have a wizzardry mage with us, but no healer. Will you join us?"

He looked over at Acedia,"Sir,"he said to Maxwell. "I think someone wants to talk to you."

"So, I see that you're hunting that Dire Wolf"Said a voice. It eventually materialized into a High Flayer, surface-dwelling cousins of the Mindflayers. The thing was that It was slightly translucent, and was missing a tentacle. "It ripped off my tentacle, and then I died of the blood loss. A shaman turned me into a corporeal ghost, so I have some Psipowers, and my ghostly telekenesis. I'm also just as tangible as you, I'm just glowy and seethrough. I want to join you guys.I want REVENGE!!" He clenched his fists. "By the way,"he said"if you find my tentacle, I'll become reincarnated. Name's Tem. Tem Deepwater.

<GM's note: OK, normaly I wouldn't alow you to play a ghost since they're undead. Nor a mindflayer since they are essentialy aliens. But if you play it well, it could be interesting. Just remember the page-one rules. This is about playing out the role, not about having superpowers. Anyways, welcome to the game, ten10.

Maxwell turned to the oddly glowing thing with tentecles for the lower part of it's face. Maxwell was initialy horrified, and tensed up. The surface-dwelling Flayers had long ago broken away from their underground-dwelling cousins and had lived peacefully alongside the other surface-dwlling races for eons. However, ledgends and myths and children's tales were still told that featured Flayers in the role of the monster or the villan. Most humans were prejudiced against Flayers, although some Merchants found the mind-reading abilities of a hired Flayer to be invaluable asset during trade negotiations. Maxwell himself had delt with such a merchant and his hired Flayer mind-reader. That was four years ago, and the strange feeling one gets when another being enters your mind is something Maxwell would never forget. This Flayer seemed to be a ghost, but that didn't make Maxwell feel any more comfortable. Ghosts were something he didn't understand at all. They were the province of holy men and clerics, not a gem merchant. His first instinct was to call for the Wizzard, but he caught huimself and realised that he was being irrational. As much as it made him uncomfortable, Maxwell knew this Flayer could prove to be an asset. He would just have to be carefull with it.
Maxwell spoke up: "Alright, mister Deepwater. You may join with our party, but let me just make something clear first so there's no mistunderstanding. We're on this quest to slay the Dire Wolf, and that is our first priority. Your own personal vendetta must come after that. If it comes down to slaying the Dire Wolf and pursuing your revenge, I'm afraid slaying the wolf must trump your desire for revenge. Are we clear on that point?

Acedia did follow Marcus and Prosper and everyone into the tavern, finally piping up in the brief silence after Maxwell had finished speaking.

"As I said outside, though I doubt any of you heard me - you lot are a little conspicuous to be persuing an intelligent beast such as a dire wolf, don't you think? I've heard tell that they can detect movement across vast distances, but even if they couldn't, you're a little hard to miss, no offense," she said, speaking rather confidently. "An herbalist is a step in the right direction as well, but what good will herbs do you if you can't get close enough to the beast to use them?"

She raised these points mainly because she could help with that. Those medallions, remember? Their use wasn't confined specifically to her. The fact that she had some kind of control over her forms was what set her apart from the layman using the Burcet twins'* magic. And she also had a few more medallions besides the falcon, spider, rat, and panther as well - she'd just expended their magic less than 24 hours ago.

Acedia was shaken out of her thoughts as a ghostly, 3-tentacled High Flayer held out his hand to her."Nice to meet you"He said."I hear that they caught you stealing stuff from them? I wouldn't blame you. Well, time to eat." He bit into his bread."Wait... I thought ghosts didn't eat?"Said Acedia.
"They don't"said the Flayer."I'm a spirit. I'm every bit as tangible as everyone else, and I have to eat, too. That incompetent shaman apparently sprinkled his words with ghostmagic, which is how I look ghostly and whatnot.Here. Take my bread."He said"you need it more than me"

<GMs' note: Yeah, I have to agree. After all, I did write those rules. Please don't put words in the the other player character's mouths, people. You can descibe the actions or words of minor non-player characters (NPC) like townsfolk, monsters, enemies in a fight, etc., but other players' characters are theirs to controll. NPCs that already have said something (ie. Maxwell, Farnham, the Ogre-Mage, etc.) are the GM's to controll. I will rarely put words or actions onto your the player characters, something I don't recall doing except to Clan... and that was punishment for him blatantly doing a game-breaking superpower out of the blue. He was subsequently baned... you can go back and read that part if you want. It isn't pretty.
I'd just like to commend you all for your good role-playing, especialy the new players. >

prosper felt the odd sensation of a mind brushing against his. He shudderd involuntarily. But he saw Tem's smile and decided that it was sincere, no mater how odd it looked. He bravely shook the creatures hand.
"My name's Prosper. What did you mean by 'heard about'?"

"GHOOOSSTTSS!!"said one."Flayers!"said another. Everyone panicked and ran out. 'nice goin' Tem. Once again everyone fears high Flayers'thought Tem. "I'm sorry guys. This happens to me a lot. I wish I was alive again."he said,"Oh, I've almost forgot this other thing I picked up from some all-too-powerful thoughts invading my psi-shield I normally keep up that there's a better Inn nearby. We might wanna head there."

Maxwell said: "So, I guess we'll need another room for the new party members. Erm, I'll see if I can find the innkeeper. The kitchen should be open by now. You guys go ahead, I'll catch up."

Farnham said: "Wait up, brother."

As Farnham hurried after his brother Maxwell, Drek could faintly hear riders aproaching from the south. His keen Elven hearing could just make out the sound off horse hooves hitting cobblestone. It was too faint to esitimate a number from the sound, but he was fairly certain it was more than one. That many riders galloping in the rain was unusual, espcialy in a heavy downpour like this.

Marcus' nose caught on to a somewhat familiar smell...horses, and horsemen.

"Sir Maxwell! I can smell horses coming!"
