Actually, living in a strongly republican state (Georgia), I can say I've met quite a few people who think Bush was/is one of the best presidents ever.
An interesting thing that has hovered in the back of my mind ever since 2000 is a book I read about Abraham Lincoln's life, and all the trials he went through. It's interesting, he was hated, literally hated by much of the American public. He even had several assasination attempts (in his first term, at least) during his run, not just that one. People raved about how horrible he was, but now he's revered as one of the greatest presidents of all time and one of the key factors of what held our country together during the Civil War.
