As you guys might know, I'm not an anti-gambling kind of guy. (I was a semi-pro gambler last year, and made $16k that year, solely from gambling.) I wouldn't quite classify my position as pro-gambling, but I still think if a guy really wants to play poker online, heck, let him. Unless he's an addict (and I think addiction is far less common than the press would have you think), it's hardly the worst thing he could do.

At the same time, I understand how some people want to ban this stuff. Lord knows that this allegedly free country has to protect people from themselves! But I think even if you're anti-gambling, this law is ridiculous. You commit a felony just by playing poker online? What's so bad about poker that it has to be a felony? There are people who make a living playing poker, but won't be able to if they have to pay a $10,000 fine or serve a jail sentence here and there.

What do you guys think? Do you think it's as ridiculous as I do?

I think that's a little harsh, to say the least. Granted, there are some people who get addicted, but why should they ruin it for people who play for fun?

I don't see why people outlaw gambling in the first place. As has already been said, it's not as addicting as the media would lead us to believe. I mean, they might as well ban all forms of alcohol, tobacco, and pornography while they're at it. Just because some people see something as "sinful" doesn't mean they should ban it entirely--not without any sort of valid secular argument.

It's tough dealing with things like gambling, pornography, drugs, etc. because while there are many people who can handle these things, there are also those who cannot and ruin their lives.

Should the gov't protect us from ourselves? I can't say for sure either way.

Yeah, there are people that can't handle these things, but there are also people who can't even handle mowing the lawn....hence why products have to come with such inane warnings as "do not attempt to lift mower to mow hedges" (that's a REAL warning on a lawnmower).

Maybe we should let natural selection take over and stop caring for the stupid people, let them kill themselves off instead of trying to save them.

You know, Pianoman, some days I tend to agree with you.

However, there are people who do not know the dangers of drugs, alcohol, etc. I worry about them. If everyone in the world could be educated as to the risks involved with these things, then I say sure, let the dumb ones die. They're just polluting the gene pool anyway.

:(

My last comment in the tiny text was meant to be facetious...
