Post subject: Why do couples have children?
PostPosted: Mon Mar 20, 2006 4:47 am
This question came to me yesterday morning when I was walking in the park. I was alone that morning, untill I came upon a father and her daughter. He looked like he was about 35, and she was about 5. It filled me with some warmth to see them playing together.

So a thought came to me, "Do parents have children because they would become lonely and sad without any?"

Discuss.

I think because parents just want to have children. It provides a challenge and having children is a major accomplishment. It is a great feeling to have kids, it gives you the feeling of having done something meaningful. Not to mention, it is difficult to have kids. I can tell you that personally, I was my Mom's 4th pregnancy.

Well, the logical, biological response would be the parents have children first and foremost to keep the species alive. As for lonliness and all that...I guess that's an added bonus. But parents don't sit around thinking "I want to have a baby because we need to keep the human species alive"--most don't, anyway--not concioussly. However, I'm not sure if they're doing it as a response to feeling lonely--perhaps it's just the indescribably joy of raising a child and being a parent. Can it really be explained?

Because God designed us with this in mind: to have children and love them. But any type of relationship is more important to us as humans than material possessions, so I would say having children you can love and feel loved.

Because abortions are expensive. :p

It's because of instinct, I think. You know, the natural urge to want to keep your species alive, to pass on your DNA. But I guess there's a natural need for companionship too.

The feeling of the biological instinct is not felt, I think, because it's no longer necessary-societal pressure is enough to do it, nowadays. I'm not saying that's a bad thing; nor am I trying to suggest that parents do it against their will because society expects them to. But there is some measure of that expectation present in society-it's indirect pressure.

To state what I mean by those pressures... the family the media tells us is a typical family usually has at least two children. And to suggest a norm usually causes the perception that there is an expectation. They see "normal" families with kids and say "Should we have kids? Normal families do, so...", although in fewer words. And of course, it's not that literal-it's an indirect pressure, as I said. And as I said, as well, I'm not saying society bullies people into it.

Parents have children out of necessity of their own definition, because they wouldn't be parents without children.

Back to seriousity now:

I think that biological desire will always be a part of it. I mean, babymaking is the prime objective of every living creature...

Also, I think they may do it out of loneliness. Just two people can get pretty boring...

Then of course, there're always those accidents...

That is disgusting, insensitive, and completely inappropriate.

Children can be the most wonderful experience to be had. I am not all that old, and have a lot of life to see, but I can truely say that my children are the most wonderful thing. It is beyond love, companionship,... or anyother words that I can't think of right now. There is a feeling you get when your child looks to you with pure love and trust that cannot be got or duplicated any other way. It is wonderful.

Wait till they turn into teenagers. Ungh.

But I bet having kids is a great thing. Pity I am so immature. I don't want to have kids when I grow up. I would be a terrible mother.
I dunno.... Why do people want kids? Because they want a purpose in life. There's something.

Me too...

Anyways, I'm sure all of you know that a lot of parents aren't really "trying" to have children. But hey, if they want to have kids and like them enough to keep them, more power to 'em.

Um...I belive the word you're looking for is "Couple". Parents are people that have/had kids. Unless of course you were asking "Why do people who already have kids have kids?"

EDIT: But on the sub-topic here; I don't really think anyone who thinks logicly would have kids to continue the human species. Seriously. One couple not haing a kid is not going to matter with the millions of couples having kids. Even in the off chance of most couples in the entire world not having kids, there's still like all kinds of sperm and eggs and stuff in labs that could re-establish the human race...

I want a child. Just to try and preserve some of my greatness for generations to come. So, I guess that'd be my reason.

Well, you don't have to raise and support them if they're your grandchildren.

Sea, I get the point you were trying to make (sort of agree with it, too), but that's not something people should accidently see.. -SR

It that really called for jerky?! They are teens, they don't need to see that. If you want to prove a point, do it tastefully, not with gruesome things like that.

I am kinda sorry... I should have just linked to it. But I think that it is more heartless to make fun of such a discusting think than to show those who may not have an understanding of what they are talking about. Ignorance is a more dangerous than a picture of a poor child who was forced to die because of the irresponsibilityof their parents.

The people you were showing that picture to are young teens. All Myrrh did was make a light-hearted joke, no need to go all fundie on her. Yes, I agree that was not very intelligent, what you did lacked forward thought as well. Toastpaint

Paint your own toast. Teens are the biggest demography having abortions today! Fundie???!!!! Since when is being against making light of abortions a political statement? I hope that those on both sides of the issue can at least agree that its not something to be made fun of. As for lacking forward thought, I would do the same thing again. I am sorry that more peole think it offensive to see what they are making fun of, than the actual making fun of it.

I think that this is totally on topic. People have kids (those who want kids on purpose) because they want to give love and give. They also want to strengthen their relationship with their spouse. If their ever was a post that the comment in question was inappropriate, it is this post. Not only does it downplay the sacrifice that is made by those of us that put every thing aside to expirience the joy of a child (which by the way is many times more expensive than having an abortion) but it completely trivializes the poor child whose life is in question.

Lighten up. Sheesh. And if you're worried about Myrrh getting pregnant on accident, don't. Even I don't plan on having sex until I'm in a steady relationship and ready to have kids, and I found it funny anyway.

Also, most abortions don't occur at that stage of life.

EDIT: I don't like being redundant.

I want children so I can have miniature versions of me that I can teach what to hate. That, and I feel that contributing my genetic material to the gene pool would be invaluable to the human race.

Children, bah. Children are disgusting little creatures, and no one should be allowed to make another one.

Actually, no. Instead I shall do what I do whenever somebody mentions the prospect of crafting a baby these days:

*sticks fingers in ears*
LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!

Listen kidlets, you've all got eons of time to contemplate using the sadly-natural ability to create life. So um. Please take that time. Precious things, like another's life for which you immediately become disturbingly/life-threateningly/beautifully responsible for, require it. La la la.

If what you want to pass on is hate, I think your gene pool needs some chlorine.
