Pam Anderson is boycotting the derby because they're associating themselves with the parent company of KFC.
Fair enough, but it seems a little funny, mainly because she didn't have any trouble going to the derby before that...

From this I have to ask:
Cruelty to horses = ok, cruelty to chickens = not ok? (granted, the derby is nowhere near as cruel to the horses as the alleged actions of KFC's farms are to chickens)

Funny, the article says her opposition is not based on the Yum! sponsorship, but I've read a couple other ones that said it was. Who knows?

On a related note, I'm tired of celebrities who feel they have the right to tell America what's wrong with issues A, B, and C. Um, Alec Baldwin? You didn't get rich from your political insight. There's a reason for that. Sheesh.

That's kind of dangerous logic, though. My friend Will is finishing up med school this year. He got into college with a football scholarship, though. By that reasoning, he shouldn't be a doctor because he got into college as a football player. Still, sometimes I think celebs like Anderson are just being used by these organizations (A famous person said it, so it must be true).

Anyways, I don't get why the Derby was ok til KFC's owners decided to sponsor it. I woulda thought that if she was against animal cruelty, she woulda been against the derby to start with.

Um, no. No, that's not my point at all. Your friend is a doctor because he went through medical school. He is qualified to practice medicine due to his training and studies. Pamela Anderson has never studied anything in her life. Her thought process for this protest is "Someone from PETA showed me what happens to KFC chickens and it makes me sad." The end.



And of course she is. No one would pay attention to this protest if Kathy Botwer was heading it.

Actually, Pam Anderson is pretty smart. I've heard that she knows a lot about construction (which is why I'd like to see her "stumping" for habitat for humanity). Anydangways, I never really got PETA. I mean, animals are kinda nice to take care of, but there are some people (Gulf Coast rings a bell) that need a lot more help than some chickens at some farm somewhere.

I'm not trying to be Anti-PETA here, mainly because I don't understand them. They really confuse me sometimes.

You can't always take that sort of logic. There is always going to be someone who has it worse off than you (or the person/group you are trying to help). Sometimes you have to do what you can.

I doubt if you asked many members of PETA what is the most urgent or serious concern in the world today that they would say animal cruelity. They might rank it higher than other issues you or I think are important, but in the end they would say that helping out victims of disasters (like the tsunami or hurrican katrina) is more important. Of course there are those that value animal life above that of a human, but they aren't the norm by any mean. At least not the norm of the people that I have talked with.

What I think it boils down to how cruel the people are. You said that the cruelty to chickens that has been filed against KCF is much worse than the cruelty to horses, so that's what Pam is basing her opinion on.

But here's the zinger. If it's not based on KFC's affiliation why boycott this derby in particular?

I have a lot of problems with PETA.

Their ultimate goal--and this has been stated by PETA's director(s)--is to completely cut humans off from animals. That is to say, if they had their way no one would be allowed to have pets. Any kind of animal product--even wool shaved off of sheep--would be banned. Of course, they would also impose veganism on everyone.

I know, but I can't cite specific sources on this, that PETA has funded ecoterrorist groups. PETA's core members and supporters seem to have a very low regard for human beings. I do believe Bill Murray, for example, is a supporter of PETA, and made a comment along the lines of "If several humans die from mad cow disease, it saves the lives of millions of cows" at some sort of PETA convention.

Tying to 'save' animals by opening a rift between human and nature is insane; we are living beings, and like nature, we subsist off the life of others. Until the day comes when meat, fruit, and vegtables can be grown artificially, or even synthesized a la Star Trek, that's how it's gonna be. If you don't like it, you can either starve to death (since even veganism is involved in this process, merely minimizing the amount of life that has to be taken to live), or you can aid science and technology in search of fabricated meats and veggies.

Despite that, there are things I think can be done to make life easier for animals if they're being raised for food. Some companies and groups do this; I know there are slaughterhouses designed to make it as easy as possible on cattle, designing it to remove their stress and keep them alright. Of course, these slaughterhouses still use the shot-in-the-brain technique, but as gruesome as that is, if you think about it, it's a pretty painless way to go. You literally don't know what hit you.

But yeah ... I don't trust PETA as far as I can throw them, and I think many of them are fanatical. Likely a lot of PETA's members don't realize the true agenda behind PETA's core founders, either.

StrongRad, you and I, as fellow Kentuckians know that Pam Anderson has no idea what she's talking about. She is saying it to get publicity. She knows nothing about Kentucky, and if you don't know about something, then don't talk about it.
