okay... i think ive figured out the great mystery to what the song "Hotel California" is really about... get ready for this...... it is about a man and a prostitute at a hotel, then they end up in prison because of the prostitution, then, i belive, they try to escape, but its not clear weather or not they escape.

well? what do you guys think?

That's really weird, I was just listening to Hotel California when I read that.

GETTING TO THE TASK AT HAND:

I think HC is one of those songs that make a lot of different sense to different people depending on what you're thinking about while listening to it. It's akin to 'Stairway to Heaven' in that way.

Just to point out if I already haven't, it was mentioned earlier, Marilyn Manson isn't a goth but a shock rocker who dresses funny.

I suggest you read up on the goth subculture.

i have, and all it is is a bunch of EMOs/Posers who think that by killing black cats in graveyards means that they are Satanic. the term for a goth today is usually this....
POSER GOTH

Or a complete rip off of Alice Cooper (except with crappy music).

hey, Marilyn Mansons music is cool, and its just shock rock as Rosey pointed out. but the cool thing about it is that you can turn some heads when listening to it.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
Marilyn Manson the goth Eminem. (not goth, just says shocking things so that suburban white kids will buy his albums)

Thank you, Rosalie. :)

YogSothoth Xmas - Very true. I see that more and more as time progresses. They think the point is to just walk around and try and scare people. Idiots...It's not about that or trying to worship the devil by sacrificing a perfectly good pet (black cats are awesome!)...

Mention Bauhaus to them and they don't know what the band is, or even about the Bauhaus art movement in 1919 of which the band takes it's name. Or they think The Sisters of Mercy are a bunch of chicks... or think Switchblade Symphony was a song from West Side Story.

Also, punk has had the same problem. People think Blink 182 is punk... uh no!! Neither is Green Day. You want punk? Listen to the Exploited.

About emo, it's a foreshortening of emotionally driven hardcore punk. Hardcore punk?? Woah... uhm... not really. I don't see any of them being compared to The Germs or Anti-Nowhere League.

Oh yeah, you can turn a lot of heads with Christian Death, Skinny Puppy and Ministry. And if someone knows Spanish, Paralisis Permanente.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess Eminem would be the rap version of Manson... but either really merit much to me. Don't get me wrong, listen to whatever you like. I just don't like them.

I don't think MM ever claimed to be a goth, I'm pretty sure he said himself he doesn't fit in with that stuff.

Quite a few goths do like MM, though, but not a huge amount.

I don't like him being the "Goth Eminem" because Eminem's music can still be called "Rap" or "Hip Hop", but MM's certainly isn't goth rock.

And goth is never meant to be satantic, really. That's more death metal and no musical genre is ever really *meant* to be seriosuly satanic, though there is a satanist dude who has songs about satanism as in the actual religion rather than devil worshipping.

Goth in general if you were to say it was like any religion is a bizarre mixture of the "darker" side of christianity and many electic new age and pagan themes. Neo-paganism is one of the more common religions as it fits in best. I myself am a blend between neo-paganism and a bit of theologist(which isn't usually so common among gothy types).

Dont Forget Venom, If you Record the intro to the song "In League With Satan", the part where hes talking backwards he says the following:

Venon, In League With Satan wrote:
Satan! Raised In Hell! Praised in hell! Im gonna burn your soul! Crush your bones! im gonna make you bleed! your gonna bleed for me!

You know that if you play a certain part of Britney Spear's Hit me One more time, you can hear, very specifically and clearly, "Sleep with me, I'm not too young."

While I've heard it, and wouldn't find it impossible, I seriously doubt that anyone connected in ANY way with her music is smart enough to pull something like that off.. It's coincidence, although it is incredibly hillarious.

Ditto for that Hillary Duff song. Once again, people accused Led Zeppelin of putting backmasked things in their songs, and, as it turns out, those are all coincidences. If Led Zep wasn't talented enough to do that, nobody in the teenie bopper crap genre can.

I do know that Pink Floyd did that kinda thing, but their examples seemed to poke fun at either their fans or the people who play music backwards so they can "prove" that a band is a demon band because they put backwards messages in their songs..

Either way, that kinda thing is REALLY funny.

We had a thread on this whole thing, not too long ago. I'm-a see if I can find it. If I do, I'll post it here. It had some AWESOME examples.

edit: FOUND IT!

why dont we make a whole song with just Backwards talking in it, but the music is going the right way? then it turns out to be a message like... Be Sure to Drink Your Ovaltine, or something.

Strong Rad, I take it you've heard that thing that had numerous backward messages on it where you could play them forwards and backwards?

The Pink Floyd one was hilarious. Some of them are just freaky though, including the Brtiney Spears one. I have a weird thing for subliminal messages and backwards playin' that makes me feel all scared in bed.

One that does come to mind is, another one bites the dust, which sounds like someone in a stoned voice saying "It's fun to smoke marijuana".

I played all of those, over and over. I should have said this beforehand, but, it it's possible, cover up the lyrics on screen and see if you hear anything beyond total garbage. Chances are, you won't. Except the Queen one and the Pink Floyd one... The funny thing is, on that Queen one is where the dude recorded someone singing it on a television talent show, and you still hear it. HAHA!

I think the Chicago thing you're asking about is just a joke from Little Nicky. I don't own any Chicago, though, so I can't be for certain.

I just tried saying "another one bites the dust" and then reversing it with my audio thingy, several times. I can't seem to get the "it's fun to smoke" bit, but interestingly enough, you DO end up hearing "marijuana".

Nope. They sing through their noses, like all of these other "punk" bands, but that doesn't make any of them punk.
That's like saying, because he covered a Waylon Jennings song, James Hetfield is country.

Smashing Pumpkins use some creepy hidden messages, using low volume rather than backmasking.

The creepiest one has to be a woman talking about masturbation to some bizarre background music and a flanger/chorus liquid like effect over it. And it raises it's volume at the end just so if you have the volume turned up high enough to listen, it freaks you out even more :P

I'd love to get into backmasking, but I get creeped out very easily. I get scared by the oddest things.

Actually, I'm thinking of starting a growl metal, rap and bluegrass quartet. called "The Foggy Mountain Faces of Death Crew". We're gonna sing songs about laundry detergent, or something.

Anyone want in? I pitched the idea to our own Elemental Wizard/Jewish, Gay, White MC, but he turned it down.

Try Bob Dylan. I think all he ever does is sing through his nose.

Sounds good though.

I wouldn't call that "through his nose" so much as mumbling, but, yeah.

It means singing with a whiny, nasally voice. Listen to bands like "My Chemical Romance", "Good Charlotte", "Bowling For Soup", etc.
