Look, even if they don't directly affect us, it's still fun to laugh at their silliness. Like furries. |

And the Mute City of Brawl has revealed itself! As the series in its own of Mario Kart. As you can probably tell, I like this update. I have all the Mario Karts since 64, they're good fun. Nice to see them represented. Also one of the first real updates for a while. |

Your definition of 'all' isn't very accurate. About half the stages are flat, and that doesn't exactly make them uninteresting. |

No, I'm getting frustrated with some of the stages too. I like how a lot of them are innovative (ie Icicle Mountain, Castle Siege, etc), but I've seen a LOT of stages that look to me to be just Battlefield under the guise of gimmicks (ie Smashville, Skyworld, etc). |

I'm with Ace on this one. Yes, I appreciate final stage and battlefield in melee, but only because they're like the official fighting ring or something, meanwhile all the rest of the courses are for more fun and more interesting brawls. Please nintendo, shake it up a little bit more and give us less gimmicky battlefields, please. |

Telling Nintendo to stop being gimmicky is like telling a horse to stop being a horse. yeah |

Actually Skyworld is very un-battlefield like. You can't tell from the update, but the demo revealed that you can't actually go through unbroken blocks at all, giving it a very cage-like feel, like the bottom of Hyrule Temple. Personally I have no problem with a very even ballance Smash Bros has between normal and wacky stages. As fun as fighting on a crazy stage is, sometimes I like having brawls in places where I can focus entirely on the fight itself. I'd hate it if Battlefield and Final Destination were the only places I could do that. But since not complaining isn't good enough, let's bring up a chart! NORMAL STAGES (flat with platforms) Battlefield Yoshi's Island Lylat Cruise Smashville Battleship Halberd Norfair Mario Circuit Total: 7 ABNORMAL STAGES (different, unique stages) Delfino Plaza Bridge of Eldin Rumble Falls Skyworld Castle Siege WarioWare Pokemon Stadium 2 Shadow Moses Island New Pork City Pichochat The Summit Hyrule Temple Total: 12 That's five more. And that's only if you call the interesting Halberd, Norfair and Mario Kart stages battlefield-like. Also, for the heck of it, let's compare this to Melee! NORMAL STAGES (flat with platforms) Kongo Jungle - Jungle Japes - Yoshi's Story - Fountain of Dreams - Green Greens - Brinstar - Battlefield - Final Destination - N64 Dream Land - N64 Kongo Jungle Total: 10 ABNORMAL STAGES (yadda yadda) Icicle Mountain - Princess Peach's Castle - Rainbow Cruise - Great Bay - Temple - Yoshi's Island - Corneria - Venom - Flat Zone - Brinstar Depths - Onett - Fourside - Mute City - Big Blue - Pokemon Stadium - Poke Floats - Mushroom Kingdom - Mushroom Kingdom II - N64 Yoshi's Island Total: 19 Both games nearly have a 2:1 ratio so far, I'd say. No need to complain. |

I was going to say something like that, but you beat me to the comparisons. So I'll just say "Color Printer approves of the above post." But I doubt that means anything to anyone. |

You guys know by tommorow, every SSBB character will be spilled like Maple Syrup on Pancakes, I'm wondering how you guys feel about that. I honestly feel great but sorry for those who want to avoid spoilers. |

I'm hoping it's just playable characters. I wanna still be able to flaunt my knowledge of Pokey all up ons. If it's jsut playable characters, this'll rawk. If not... Awesome and all, but meh. EDIT: A true double update, likely because one's so obscure for most of the world. The Assist Trophies Stafy and Waluigi! Stafy looks pretty cool if you give him a chance, and Waluigi seems to fit. I like it. |

Shweet. Waluigi with his premiere tennis racket. No matter how redundant it may seem now, I'm still crossing my fingers for a Daisy Assist trophy with her golf clubs or her soccer uniform. |

The ratio is not what people are frustrated with. It's the fact that there are still more Battlefield-like stages than there should be. I mean I'm all cool with a few Battlefield stages, but there were a lot of stages here with potential (HALBERD) that look like they're just the standard three-platform stage with some gimmicks flying at you. |

I mean I'm all cool with a few Battlefield stages, but there were a lot of stages here with potential (HALBERD) that look like they're just the standard three-platform stage with some gimmicks flying at you. Halberd, Lylat Cruise, Norfair and such still look like it'll be plenty of fun even with the familiar set-up. It's not like the floating platforms are the same in each stage anyway, they're set up different and each stage features very different and unique obstacles and atmosphere. Battlefield is standard. Yoshi's Island has a rounded platform with a single tilting middle platform, and the support ghost. Lylat cruise tilts back and forth, and features three small platforms at the same height. Smashville is large and flat, and has a single platform that moves back and forth, and even off the stage. Norfair has a small bottom platform and a bizarre V shape, and plenty of lava. These levels will not play the same and definitely don't seem dull to me. It's actually quite a step up from Melee, which actually did use the exact battlefield set-up repeatedly without much differenciation rather than atmosphere. (Yoshi's Story, Fountain of Dreams, Battlefield, N64 Dream Land) The flat ground with platforms method is used often because it works. While there are some true unique gems such as Princess Peach's Castle and Corneria, some unqiue levels weren't particularally fun to play on. (For me personally: SMW Yoshi's Island, Venom, Icicle Mountain, Mushroom Kingdom, Brinstar Depths. Not that these levels were bad and shouldn't have existed, they just didn't work well for me.) So while you're upset that the Halberd doesn't have you jumping on the main-shaft and ballancing on the wings, I'm happy that I have a fun, interesting and atmospheric stage with a layout that I know will work fine when it comes to having a good battle. Go go gadget thankfulness! |

Okay, I'm just going to rearrange this list to be more how I see things. Flat in this case is any course that is battlefield-like or final destination-like. FLAT STAGES Battlefield Yoshi's Island Lylat Cruise Smashville Battleship Halberd Norfair Mario Circuit Bridge of Eldin Total: 8 DEFINITELY NOT FLAT STAGES Rumble Falls Skyworld Castle Siege WarioWare Pichochat The Summit Hyrule Temple Total: 7 STAGES THAT MAYBE FLATTER THAN WE THINK (due to few actual and or confusing screenshots of stage) Delfino Plaza New Pork City Shadow Moses Island Pokemon Stadium 2 Total: 4 Now, the potentially flat stages can go either way, which gives us a breakdown of either 12:7 or 8:11, max and min. The first is a pretty crummy ratio, the second I could deal with more. I think that some of this will be determined once the game comes out, and I don't really think that there's much more we can do over this other than argue pointless squabbles. |

--BIG LIST! LOOK ABOVE!-- Now, the potentially flat stages can go either way, which gives us a breakdown of either 12:7 or 8:11, max and min. The first is a pretty crummy ratio, the second I could deal with more. I think that some of this will be determined once the game comes out, and I don't really think that there's much more we can do over this other than argue pointless squabbles. Bridge of Eldin may be flat, but it isn't battlefield or final destination-like at all, which is what my list (and all the fuss) was about. This is because of its huge size, walk-off edges, and huge holes that appear in the middle which really mix things up. Unless "FLAT" is your sole criteria here, which is kind of a strange decision. But if that's the case, let me remind you tht Yoshi's Island is not flat. As for Delfino Plaza, I saw plenty of videos of it in the demo and it's definitely isn't all a flat "battlefield". You go on all sorts of different buildings and islands, just go on YouTube and search for some videos. Pokemon Stadium 2 varies between battlefield-like and not, just like the first. And New Pork City is definitely not flat or battlefield-like. Did you even look at the stage? Though I agree that Shadow Moses Island is somewhat up in the air. But it's definitely difficult to determine what stages fit which criteria. I'd question both Norfair and Mario Kart as being just plain "flat w/platform" stages due to their design and heavy-handed gimmicks. While some like Pokemon Stadium 2 and Delfino Plaza vary between the two, as you can expect transforming stages to do. At any rate, the one thing Smash Bros stages isn't lacking is variety. So if you don't like a particular kind of stage, just play the many stages you do like, and don't complain that Smash Bros wasn't completely designed with your particular tastes in mind. |
