It's not the spellchecker, it's the dictionary. If you hit a word that your dictionary thinks is misspelled but actually isn't, right click it and select "Add to dictionary" from the right-click menu. Also, be sure you have the proper dictionary installed: Right-click anywhere in an open Firefox page, select "Languages", then select "Add dictionaries..." There's more than one English dictionary available.

The next person is wondering how I knew all that.
