Marcus's leg was still broken, but Horin fashioned a crutch for him so he could hobble along. Maria laid hands on his leg, and it felt a bit better (but was still broken). Slowly, the party made it's way back to the Great Oak, where the Pixies were waiting for them.

Thurendel explained that the heroes has fought a monster and had defeated it. He didn't say that they had killed it, but he didn't say that they hadn't either. The Pixes said that they were happy to let the Druids use the Great Oak to heal and that they were happy that they could be friends again. Maxwell and Captain Sealem got a camp set up as best they could, picthing tents between the oaks and making a campfire in a small clearing.
Micheal was still asleep, so Farnham tucked him into tent. Goldwing alighted on Drek's arm and stayed there, content to perch on his mater's arm.

"Awww, I wanted to slay the dragon!" pouted Marcus. "I wanted to do something big, something special. But now I'll never have a chance to slay a dragon. I'll just be a big ol' Lizzardman with nothing big to fight."

Marcus lay in a cot, careful not to move his arm or his leg. His whole body hurt even when he was perfectly still.

Quinn sheathed his sword and engaged his cryokinesis to help to extinguish the fire. As he is doing this, he says to Tem, "Sure. And i feel thes ame way about telekinesis. How They manage without it, i'll never know. I'm Quinn and i'm actually am a elf."

Andrew tried to cheer up Marcus saying "Well I thought it was amazing that you were able to grip on to that dragon, you'd have to be pretty strong and brave to do that!"

Maxwell nodded: "Indeed, I dare say that Marcus must be the bravest man here present."

Captain Sealem said: "Aye, he fought true and bold, and with valour! So, I salute you, Marcus! If I had a medal to award you, I would. But, I can give you an honour none the less. As a Captain of His Imperial Majesties Personal Guard, and seeing as how my own company has positions open, I have the power to employ you as an Auxiliary to the company of swordsmen under my command. Thus, I would offer you the rank of Corporal, with an offer to train you towards a commision as a Lieutenant. What do you say, old chap?"

Marcus was a bit confused by all the big words. "Aucksi-what? Lootemmin? What do those mean? I just want a big, shiny medal!" The hungry Lizzard patted his belly.

"And a big meal, too. These muscles aren't gonna get bigger if I just lay here!" Marcus flexed his good arm.

Prosper was surprised that he had been able to deliver the death blow to the dragon, and was thus very pleased with himself. He settled down under an oak for a nap.

Farnham said: "It means that he's giving you the opportunity to become an army officer, Marcus. But I thought only Elves could serve in the Suldeneselarian army?"
Captain Sealem said: "Usually, that's true, yes. However, it is not unheard of for a foreigner to earn a place is the officer corps. Why, during the previous war with the northern barbarians there were a few humans who became officers in the Imperial armies. A skilled man is a valuable man, and from a military perspective it matters little what country he hails from. If he can fight and he can lead then he is officer material. Anyways, Marcus: The term "Auxiliary" refers to lightly armoured soldiers, or "Light Infantry". In other words, soldiery who eschew heavy armour in favour of quickness. A Lieutenant is the most junior of the officer ranks in my army."

<GM's Note: The part about Auxiliary meaning Light Infantry is actually true. In the real world the term goes all the way back to the early Roman Empire, who used unarmoured or lightly armoured javelin throwers, slinger, or archers to support the main body of the legionaries and roman horsemen. Thus, if one was not Calvary nor Legionary then one was Auxiliary (Pilium Auxilia , Peltalest Auxilia , Sagittarii Auxilia ., etc)

"There is also another reason why the Legions have become attenuated: The labour of serving in them is great, the arms are heavier, the duties more frequent, the discipline more severe; to avoid this many flock to the Auxilia to take the oaths of service, where the sweat is less and the rewards come sooner" - Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, a celebrated military writer of the 4th century.

The term later developed to mean any grouping that supported or augmented the main grouping, but for a long time through the Dark Ages it held military meaning as well.>

"Erm, Quinn..." said Tem, "I hate asking you this but... how does an elf go about psychic powers? Whereas mine are pseudo-natural, far as I know, elves are tapped away from the ether. And how in the world do you have cryokinesis?"

Quinn stopped in his tracks and walked back over to Tem. "You're correct," Quinn said, "Typically we elves are tapped away from the ether. My powers came to me through being at the wrong place at the wrong time." Quinn takes off his right glove to reveal a scar shaped like a Right Crescent moon. "See, when I was a kid, I lived in this village with a shrine to the moon in it. Inside was a stone that was very sacred, holy, and had special powers, as I later found out. Apparently this stone gives any who had lived at least 6 years within 200 paces of it a kind of underdeveloped ESP. I had been living in the village for 7 years by the time 'the incident' happened." Quinn paused to take a long drink from a hip flask, and then continued, "Before I go any further with my story, you have to understand, I was very religious at that point, everyone in my village was. Anyways, I was at the shrine, about 9 years ago today, for a prayer to The Almighty Father (God). Outside it was raining something fierce. It had been raining for a week straight, and everyone was worried. Just 2 days earlier, the river had burst its banks and had flooded the plains just south of our village. Anyways, I was making my prayer, back of my right hand to the stone, as was customary, when suddenly lightning struck the stone. The next thing I remember, I'm in my bed with a burn on the back of my hand. That evening, it was very itchy and during the night, it started to glow. It seemed to be beckoning me to the shrine and there I went. I pressed the burn against the stone and it instantly stopped glowing. A deep voice sounded in my head, 'Use your powers well, child.' and I blacked out. I awoke to find myself in my bed, no memory of how i got there. I noticed during the next few days, I was better able to sense what was about to happen and that the burn became a crescent moon shape," Concluded Quinn. "The cryokinesis and telekinesis developed overtime".
Quinn put his glove back on and said telepathically to Tem, "Does that answer your questions?"

'yes. Yes it does. I assume that you suffered greatly after learning of your powers' replied Tem telepathically.

Taryn went with the healers et al after Marcus was attended to, deciding she didn't really feel like doing much else at the moment. The idea that she no longer had any kind of special connections with which she could aid her companions made her feel somehow vulnerable, which was a sensation completely alien to her. The very nature and goal of every spectre is the desire to wield some kind of power, some kind of control over mortal beings - the knowledge that she had no power or control over anyone with whom she was currently traveling bothered her immensely for this reason.

Acedia coughed slightly and turned to Aurieul. "Erm. Perhaps we ought to go find everyone else? Eruantian, you should be able to stand and walk now, I think," she finished, prodding the still-supine half-elf with the toe of her boot.

Prosper awoke from his short nap, and looked around. He saw the newcomer, who appenently had powers similar to Tem's, who, surprisingly, was back. Oh boy, he thought, two of them. Prosper noticed that Eruantian, Acedia, and, what was her name? Auriel? Were missing.
The young boy got up, and wandered off in a random direction, hoping to find them. He felt different, more confident in his skill with a weapon, especially with a spear. He wasn't sure why, after all, he hadn't done much fighting, and killing the dragon was more luck than anything. Still, he could probably hold his own much better than he used to. He took a few expiremental whacks at the trees, imagining enemies all to his left and right. He stopped, remembering why he was out here.
"Eruantian?" he called. "Acedia? Where are you guys?"

"That sounds like a good idea to me," Aurieul began to say. Then she heard Prosper calling. "I think they've found us instead. Over here Prosper!"

Eruantian was still in shock over everything that had recently happened. In the past few days he had fought the Dire Wolf, spent 20 years in a frozen wasteland, suffered frosty arcanic feedback, was driven into a bloodthirsty rage, spent time under the influence, and fought a dragon against his better judgement. As if that wasn't enough to make him lose his mind, he lost his house, his wagon, his horse, and his last, most prized possession. Quite frankly, Eruantian was ready to have a nervous breakdown.

When Acedia prodded him to get up, Eruantian did just that. He stood up and didn't say a word. He just stood there with an empty, apathetic expression on his face... as if waiting for something... anything... It was actually a bit creepy.

Acedia looked at Eruantian concernedly, but said nothing to him, joining Aurieul in verbally guiding Prosper to the small clearing in which the three of them currently stood. After about a minute of this, she suddenly turned to Eruantian again. "Don't forget your sword," she advised curtly, gesturing toward the weapon that was still embedded in the tree.

Eruantian pulled his sword out of the tree without saying a word. He did not, however, sheath it. He stood there, holding it.

"Okay Prosper, lead the way." Aurieul then noticed that Eruantian still had his sword unsheathed. "The dragon has been slain, there's no need to keep your weapon at the ready."

Aurieul let Prosper and Acedia pull ahead of her and Eruantian before addressing him again. "How are you?" Aurieul had noticed his stony silence. It probably wasn't a good sign, and considering what he'd been through in just the short time Aurieul had known him, she thought she could understand at least a little of what he was going through. After all, she'd faced part of it with him.

Acedia followed Prosper back to where everyone else was, deciding to worry about Eruantian's state of mind later. After all, he seemed to have bounced back, er, reasonably well from everything else that had happened...

Taryn was still in kind of a weird mood. The fact that she was currently sitting crosslegged and brooding while hovering a full four and a half feet in the air showed that she wasn't too out-of-it to show off, however, and that was a relatively good sign.

The pixies invited everyone to join them in a feast, saying: "You saved our forest from that horrible monster. It's the least we can do."
They magically created a table filled with all sorts of exotic and tasty food. Roast game, wild boar, grilled vegetables, salads, fruits, nuts, cakes and candies... everything but the proverbial kitchen sink was represented on the feast table.
Captain Sealem smiled and said: "Well, Marcus, you get your wish: I do believe I see a roast pig with your name on it somewhere in there!"
