"Although, in all fairness, they're not exactly in our way per se. We're just being charitable and offering our services to whomever may need them," Taryn pointed out, only half-under her breath. "This is otherwise known as 'wasting valuable time,'" she continued, muttering to herself now. Though considering she has absolutely nothing but time to waste, she can afford not to hurry.

Marcus was equally bored. "I'm with you--I wanna do me some fightin'!"

The old Druid said: "Well, I assure you there will be plenty to fight when we get to the Standing Stones. Follow me."
He led the group through the woods to a glade. Inside the glade were a number of people, all asleep.
At a distance of about 400 meters away, Thruendel stopped and crouched down. "Can you feel it? The thing is nearby. Take care, my friends."

Maria said: "I don't see any monsters."
Maxwell said: "Neither do I. Just those sleeping folk in the circle of stones."

However, Horin could feel something. Something evil was near, something radiating fear. He could feel it in his bones. He uttered a little prayer for courage (in Dwarvish) to Gorm Gulthyn, and though his faith, he knew the words to a new song of protection.

<GM's note: Gorn Gulthyn has smiled on Horin and granted him the spell "Bless"

Bless(Enchantment/Compulsion, Hope, Mind-Affecting): Bless fills all the caster's allies (who can see the caster or be seen by the caster) with hope and courage. Anyone affected by this spell becomes temporarily immune to fear effects and gains a boost to their morale for the duration of the spell. Also, when this spell is cast, it will counter and dispel any effects of the Bane spell any ally may be under. This spell continues to have effect as long as the caster continues to chant the appropriate holy verses. Thus, the spell is an exclusive action spell if the caster wishes to sustain it beyond it's initial effect. The caster does not feel any particular fatigue for casting or sustaining this spell.>

Marcus could smell something too. He climbed one of the Stones to get a bigger radius. "I smell a monster coming...can't tell what it is yet..." The Lizzard sniffed the air some more.

"...Getting a little closer...smells....kinda firey..." Marcus froze. "It's a dragon! Sir, we have a dragon coming! From the..." He turned to his left. "...west! From the west!"

"More like two, can you feel the air thump with the wings?" Horin looked up. "I don't think they are here to help us, either." Horin cast bless.

Maxwell said: "Micheal, how much do you know about Dragons?"

Micheal responded: "I've never met one, but from what I've read one of them probably would be capable of what our Druid friend here has described. From what I learned at the academy, all Dragons are powerfull spellcasters and a lot of them can generate spell-like effects at will. There's a wide variety of them, and their various sub-species are classified by the characteristics of their scales. Chromatic dragons are usually evil, Metallic dragons are usually good." Micheal pulled out a little book from his backpoack, and perused it for a few seconds. "Let's see... Dracoids, dracolictes, drailurs... Ah, here we are.. Dragons! It says here that the principle kinds of Chromatic dragons are Black, Blue, Green, Red, White, Brown, Orange, Purple, and Yellow. The principle kinds of Metallic dragons are Iron, Copper, Brass, Bronze, Silver, Steel, Platinum, and Gold. There's also the Crystal Dragons, but there hasn't been a reported sighting of a living Gem Dragon in centuries so I doubt it's one of those. Marcus, did you say it smell fiery? Well, that could be a Red Dragon, or it could also be a Gold Dragon. Both of them breath fire. If it is a Red Dragon, I'll see if I can get a Sphere of Wind up to deflect it's fire-breath while the fighters go for it's eyes with metal weapons. Red Dragons, like all Chromatic dragons, can be hurt with anything metal."

Maria said: "Aye, the Chromatics certainly don't like Steel. Goes through their hide like a prune through a Gnome."

Maxwell, dryly, replied: "So, how do we beat one of those things?"

Micheal, equally dryly said: "Very carefully. If we're lucky and it's a Juvenile, I might be able to take it down with a Cone Of Cold or a Call Lightning. Otherwise, it's gonna dish out some hurting of it's own for us before we're through. This is not gonna be a cake walk, by any stretch of the imagination."

Thurendel said: "I'm afraid my spells will be of little use against a dragon. There are no forest animal around that I can call for help... it probably ate them all... and I don't have any direct-combat spells. However, I can armor you for the coming fight. I can make your skin become tough like stone yet still movable like flesh. This will aid you in surviving the fires a Red Dragon can breath."

Farnham said: "Excelent, good Druid. How long to enchant all of us in that way?"

Thurendel replied: "Why, but a moment. It is a mass-effect spell, though I will have to remain behind and chant to the Oakfather to sustain the effects. Gather close, my friends, It comes!"

Suddenly, the earth trembled and distant Oak tree split in half. It was a Great Red Dragon landing on the tree, It's weight splitting the tree in half as it landed!

Maxwell said: "Um, that's not good, is it?"

Micheal said: "Could be worse. Could be a Hydra. Let's hope it hasn't seen us yet. Now, Thurendel, cast that Stone Skin!"

Thruendel murmured some solemn words in a language as old as time, and thumped his walking-stick against a stone. Suddenly each party member's skin became like stone. The old druid stared chanting something unintelligible and walked into a tree... passing into the branches as if he had stepped through the edge of a shadow. his voice reverberated in each part member's mind: "I shall remain here and watch over you. Good luck, the beast springs to attack!"

<GM's Notes:
Thurendel the Wise has just cast three spells in rapid succession: Mass StoneSkin, Treewalk, and Broadcast Thoughts.

Mass StoneSkin boosts the defensive armor of each ally within 10 feet from the caster by turning their skin to stone. The spell does not hinder movement in any way. The effects last until the spell is no longer sustained or the caster perishes.

Treewalk allows the caster to become one with the nearby plant life, effectively passing his body safely into Limbo for storage while his mind and soul spread out into all the surrounding plants. This makes the caster effectively immune to normal attacks. Only an attack that could wipe out an entire forest at once could damage the caster wile this spell remains in effect. The spell lasts until the caster wills his body to come out of a particular tree. This also means that the caster can use this spell to traverse the entire length of a forest in the blink of an eye.

Broadcast Thoughts. This spell creates a mental link between himself and all allies withing line of sight at the time of the casting. The link remains untill either the caster or one of the allies is slain or goes to sleep, or untill the caster wills the spell to end, whichever come first. While the spell remains in effect, the caster can send his thoughts to all of his allies, silently and without fail. The allies cannot communicate via this method, only the caster. Persons or creatures that natualy (or otherwise) capable of sending and receiving mental communication may be able to intercept the messages send via the effects of this spell.>

Captain Sealem donned his helmet, readied his sword, and said: "Great Maker, that's a big one! Prince Drek, aim for the eyes! Try and blind it! Everybody else, don't get stepped on! I am NOT peeling anyone off the forest floor today, understand? Ok then... For The Emperor! CHARGE!"

Marcus couldn't believe his eyes. It was a real-live Dragon! This was what he was waiting for all his life, and now he would finally live his dream.

The Lizzardboy leapt from his perch on the standing stone. With the Captain and his forces distracting the Dragon's sight, Marcus sneaked into the giant pile of trees and such and climbed onto the tail of the mighty red beast. Holding on tightly to its spines, Marcus took out his sword and started hacking at the Dragon's tough scales.

This beast was truly Great; it felt barely a scratch from the littler reptile's swordsmanship. "C'mon, Dragon! Gimme what you've got!"

<OOC: I'm rejoining but not as Michael, he' s better off as an NPC than in my hands, His name will be introduced later>

Somewhere nearby, a monk was walking alone, he left the monastery he has been training in body, mind and soul for 20 years (he's 24, so his been training since he was 4), wearing loose clothing with sandles, carrying a bo (a long, thin staff) as a backup weapon in case fighting unarmed is not the best choice.

He saw a Dragon nearby with Marcus attacking with his sword, knowing the Lizzardboy could be in danger he ran towards the fight impulsively.

Micheal cast Cone Of Cold at the dragon, freezing the dragon's head in a coating of ice. However, the ice was rapidly melting. In seconds, the dragon would be able to breath fire. In the meanwhile, Maxwell, Farnham, Maria, Captain Sealem and the remaining three Elven Swordsmen had formed a line and were awaiting an opportunity to attack... but with the Dragon still in the tree they couldn't close to melee distance.

Micheal shouted: "Get clear, Marcus! I'm gonna call lightning on the Wrym!"

But before he could, the dragon beat it's wings furiously, creating a torrent of wind that blew the entire party (except Marcus, who's till on it's tail) over. Leaping into the air, it spoke telepathicly: "Humansss.... tasty humansss... I will roast you and eat you... yess... Now, Run away and give me some sport! Run in fear! Hahaha.."

<Thankfully, Horin's Bless spell is still protecting everyone, or they'd all be running in fear right about now>

The monk looks up at the Dragon and thinks "Maybe if I find someway to distract the dragon, the other group will have a chance to attack...but it could be risky, I could get scorched"

Drek nocked an arrow, ready to fire, only to have it go astray when he fell to the ground. As the dragon loomed over the fallen party, a shriek could be heard from above. Suddenly, a brown blur shot down from the sky towards the great beast. Drek smiled and shouted, "Goldwing!"

The eagle raked her talons across the dragon's left eye, and flew for the safety of the trees. The dragon roared in agony as blood flowed from the mess that had been its eye. Taking advantage of this distraction, Drek grabbed his bow and jumped back up. Pulling back his bow, he launched another arrow, this one impacting on the dragon's snout. Emboldened by this small victory, the elf continued to assault the beast with arrows.

Marcus held on for dear life as the Dragon's tail whipped around. Those muscles of his really came in handy, even when the beast rose into the air. The Lizzard wasn't quite strong enough to hold on with one arm & fight with the other, so he kept holding on through the wind and stuff.

Forgot about me, did ya? Marcus hissed in the old Dragon-Tongue. Little cousin Marcus? Come and get me, draggie!

Taryn was already uncomfortable with the sheer amount of magic currently in the air, and the dragon wasn't making things any better. Because of what she was, the wind generated by the dragon's wings flung her into a tree, rather than just knocking her over as it did the rest of the party. A spectre's body isn't very dense at all, you see, so it does not take much to knock one off its feet. The fact that the spectre can fly serves to partially compensate for this minor shortcoming. At any rate, Taryn had been distracted and so hit the tree with a fairly hollow thunk. The stoneskin spell helped marginally.

Getting to her feet, the spectre quickly took to the air, joining Drek in assaulting the dragon with projectiles with her own bow, which last saw use in the battle against the orcs in Targos. This time, however, the arrows weren't on fire, because fighting fire with fire simply never works out the way it ought to.

Meanwhile, Tem watched the whole thing on a crystal ball. Ixleflerb's son, Ancorad, looked over Tem's shoulder. "sir, and commander in chief--excuse me--HADOKEN!" Ancorad blasted an enemy soldier, "of your army, and son of your friend, I understand your friend's plight, and your moral one. However, my father passed me down... this." Ancorad pulled a small case out of his pack, and opened it. Inside was a staff, jeweled intricately. "It's a staff of teleportation. Only one exists that I know of, and it only has a single charge left. I want to use it to 'port you there. I'll take care of shatner and the army."
"Ancorad, I trust--Hyah!" Tem kicked another soldier in the face, "that, if you make Reaver your second in command, We'll win. I need to go to my friends. You understand, right?"
"Yes."
"Then activate the staff."
Tem disappeared in a flash, and reappeared in by Maxwell. "You don't honestly think I'd miss the fun?" Tem laughed maniacally and fired a few psibolts at the dragon, and strapped on his psychonaut goggles.

Partial blinded and screaming in agony, the Dragon took to the skies. Flicking it's tail left and right in an effort to dislodge Marcus, the Dragon zig-zaged across the forest canopy (above the treetops) in a crazy pattern.

Micheal got up and said: "Uh-oh.. don't look now, but here come some Druids... and I don't think they're here to give us flowers. I'm going Astral... gotta figure out what kind of spell they're under... be right back."

Maxwell said: "Don't attack the Druids yet, people. It's the Dragon we want."

The mind-controlled Druids were coming out of the forest, holding tree branches and hunks of wood. They were walking, rather than running, so it would take them quite a while to reach the party.

Captain Sealem said: "They're not much of a threat... they are holy men, not warriors. If they do join in melee with us, we can sinply bash them on their heads and knock them out."

Maria turned to Taryn, ran to her side and said: "Here, let me help you."

The Dragon's flying combined with the thrashing of its tail gave Marcus a very hard time staying on. As they passed the trees, Marcus simply couldn't hold on any longer and fell to the forest floor with a CLUNK of his trusty sword. The fine dragon-design hilt couldn't help the Lizzard now as he lay nearly unconscious among the leaves and the broken branches.

Immediately a few Druids came for Marcus...

Fortunately the Monk came and kicked a Druid coming for Marcus in the back, knocking him out.

Suddenely the 2 Druids approaching attacked the Monk, the Monk dodged the blows and as a counter attack, punched a druid in the chest, rendering him unconscious, just when the other Druid was about to cast a spell, he pulled out his Bo and wacked the Druid in the head. With all the druids down he checked to see if Marcus was okay.

<GM's note: The mind-controlled druids can't actually cast any spells because the Oakfather has withdrawn his favor from them, but the mind-controlled druids don't know that, so they occasional will try and cast a spell. Mostly, though, they just try and bash.>

Micheal came out of a trance: "It's some sort of Domination spell... I could break it with an Anti-magic shell, but that would break Horin's anti-fear spell and our Stone Skin spells as well. There's some kind of physical component of the spell residing in each of the mind-controlled druids; They must have eaten something that made them more susceptible to the Dragon's magic. That's also why we're not affected. Anyways, if we kill the Dragon, we free the druids. Now if I could just get the Wrym to land so I could blast it one...."

Drek thought for a moment. "Perhaps if Taryn and I aimed for it's wings, we could force it to the ground, although I admit I don't like the idea of standing in the open firing arrows at an angry dragon." Drek sighed. "Right now I really wish Sereshin was here."

Marcus lay on his belly on the ground, his right arm twisted out of place. About ten or twenty feet away was his battered sword. He could barely breathe or keep his heart going.

The Lizzardman's head slowly inched upward to meet the Monk's face...before it fell to the ground. Marcus was definitely unconscious. If he didn't get help soon, he would be dead.

{ o_o getting rather epic now, innit.

Also, Sarge, Taryn is airborne. :| So I'll just ignore Maria's comment. }

Once the dragon took to the air, Taryn wisely decided to land, just as Drek made his comment. "The dragon is not nearly as articulate or agile as you or I, Drek. It shouldn't be difficult at all to remain just out of sight while shooting at its wings. However, it would take a prodigious amount of arrows to shred that beastie's wings enough to knock it from the air." A pause. "Also, Marcus could likely use a bit of help. I saw him fall from the dragon's tail but did not see where he landed, though judging by the way he fell I don't think the landing was terribly pleasant. He's not a cat, after all, so he's probably broken something." For as much concern as Taryn appeared to be showing for the Lizzardman, she said all of this with an air of nonchalance. She might've been talking about the weather.

{ Meanwhile, let's get an update on Acedia! She's been silent since Eruantian was healed. }

At the moment, Acedia was perfectly content to stay in the background and watch, having no skill with any weapon useful against a dragon. Briefly, she wondered if she could use her new ability to see through the eyes - er, eye - of the dragon, but then realized that (1) she didn't actually know how to control the ability and (2) she had no reptilian medallions with her at the moment, and apparently this ability had something to do with them. Then she saw Marcus fall. She could make herself useful and go retrieve him - or at least take Horin over there much faster than the dwarf could walk or run. The latter would likely be a much better option, she decided, having heard and agreed with Taryn's speculation that Marcus had probably broken something. Transporting the Lizzardman, then, was a last resort.

Drek considered Taryn's comments. "You're right, finding Marcus is important. Goldwing!" The eagle landed on a branch near the party. "I want you to find Marcus for me. You remember, that big lizard that tried to attack you? If he can walk, lead him back here." Goldwing flew off to search for Marcus. "And watch out for the dragon" Drek called after her. "Acedia, can you take your hawk form and help her search?"

The Dragon, now one-eyed and bleeding dragon blood, paused in mid air and let out a blast of fire from it's mouth. However, since it's depth-perception was now seriously impaired, it missed and only ended up heating up the air below it.

Micheal said: "Gotch!" and cast Call Lightning on the dragon, now illuminated brightly by the blast of it's own fire-breath.

The Dragon lit up in a pale blue are of electrical energy as the lightning bolt hit it and it fell to the ground, smashing through the tree branches as it fell.

"Now!" cried Maxwell "Hit it while it's still dazed!"
"For Tyr!" cried Maria, leading the charge.

Horin, still chanting his Bless incantations, followed in Maria's wake. He was brandishing his Hammer and hoping for the best.

Drek stayed behind the melee fighters as they charged the dazed dragon, shooting off arrows as fast as he could.

Meanwhile, Goldwing flew just above the canopy, looking and listening for any signs of Marcus. As she searched, her keen ears picked up the sounds of fighting. She veered towards the sounds and perched on a branch.
When Goldwing saw Marcus on the ground and the monk fighting off the druids, she considered the unfamiliar man. When the druids were gone and he was checking out Marcus, she flew off of her branch and landed next to Marcus, looking up at the monk as he approached.

Eruantian had been striken with fear and doubt even before the Dragon's spell had been cast. His fear was a natural one: self doubt. The loss of his ring was more than just the loss of his power; it was the loss of his skills, of his experiance, of his confidence... and of his hope. He would have run for the hills at the start had Horin's Bless spell not robbed him of that choice. It compelled him to stay - to fight.

But how? How could he fight a dragon with no means for combat? Sure, he still had the ruffian's sword, but what use is a weapon if you know not how to use it? It did not matter, the Bless spell forced him to use it anyway. So he rushed at the dragon with his sword pointed forward, not knowing if it would do any good.

<OOC>Bless seems to have forced apon Eruantian more determination than is good for him. Discretion is the better part of valor, after all.</OOC>

Acedia nodded and tossed the appropriate amulet around her neck, taking to the skies with Goldwing. She landed on the opposite side of Marcus, but barely glanced at the monk, instead immediately hopping about and trying to determine if anything was broken. The arm twisted wrong-way-'round was a fairly good indicator - it was definitely dislocated, but not necessarily broken. We probably ought not to move him, she thought, but this isn't a very good place to be lying prone and unconscious. If we could float him somehow...maybe Taryn can, but she's busy...

And indeed, the spectre was quite busy, firing off arrows with Drek. Whether or not an unconscious being counts as an 'inanimate object' remained to be seen, as Taryn did have a severely limited telekinesis ability - and if unconscious beings did count, Marcus could be moved - if not to shelter, then at least onto a cart or a beast of burden's back.
