"What? Umber Hulks!?! I know just how to handle these guys!" said Tem.<note that his species is subterranean and so deals with these guys on a regular basis, so that's why he'll have the advantage here.> Tem dove on one monster and bashed it in the skull. He kicked it off, and made some ethereal... folding chair thingy, and THWACKY'd the other.<yes, it's the legendary Folding chair of Thwacky+3>The chair(?) immediately dematerialized. "Just leave it to us, okay? We've dealt with these before! Squad! Assemble! Pattern fdsnfdsdohnrserdr!" yelled Tem.

The party watched, in amazement, as Tem and his pals easily dispatched the Umber Hulks... even though most of them couldn't hear what was going on, it sure did look impressive.

<just for the fact that that was.. um, like stealing XP, I think we need to get more Hulks.> But, in its death throes, the Umber hulk let out a scream. Tem knew that there would be more soon. The ground rumbled underneath him...

Marcus joined in the fun, using his sword in one hand and slashing up the Umber Hulks with the claw in his other. This was typical Lizzardman carnage...and Marcus loved the adrenaline rush.

Taryn had just finished rebuilding two walls of Sam's tavern when the ground began to shake. The walls promptly fell over. "What th--aww, crap. Oh, forget it. Sorry, Sam."

Taryn and Acedia left and went over to where the group was assembled, so that they might better witness the crime against nature emerging from its subterranean habitat. Both women immediately had "WTF" looks on their faces, and Acedia was a bit more than mildly concerned about the fact that it was so armored.

Then it screeched. Acedia immediately collapsed and curled up into a ball, trying to cover her head as much as possible with her slight arms. Taryn winced. "I'm holding the rest of you responsible for this," she muttered. Granted, she had no reason to do that, but because a lot of the unfortunate events in her life could reasonably be chalked up to her own bad karma, she'd become just a wee bit jaded.

And then Tem and his, er, buddies started going to town on the bug-things, which Taryn was perfectly content to let them do.

Prosper had gotten through the gates when the Umber Hulks had emerged from the ground. He immediately ran for the shelter of a nearby building, his arm twinged. He glanced around the corner to get a better look when the scream hit him. He hit the ground struggleing to cover his ears. He bumped his bad arm and a cry of pain came from his throught. He watched from the ground, willing his senses to stop spinning, wondering if Tem and his crew were really making it seem that easy. Show off, he thought. When the battle was over and the hulks were either dead or badly wounded he stood up, and began walking to the rest of the party. The dieing hulks scream forced him to stop halfway, but this time he did not fall. Well, it's over, no thanks to me, he said to himself. Then the hole began to rumble again.

"Hey!" said Tem to no one in particular. "I feel somehow... insulted*. As if someone resents the fact I killed some insectoids. but... seriously, the drow HAVE to be behind this. Hulks hate light, and frankly, they're just too friggin' stupid." <[s]*You know who you are[/s] EDIT'd!!>

The ground rumbled again, and something new emerged. It was a glowing silvery sphere, approximately 10 feet in diameter. It was being carried by an Umber Hulk, who emerged after it, rolling the sphere along the ground.

Micheal immediately knew that this was a magical construct of some sort, and was about to say so. He prepared to cast Anti-Magic Shell.

Prosper ran to the rest of the group. "I don't know Marcus. But why wait to find out? Let's charge it before it decides to show us!" Prosper readied his spear in his good arm, waiting for Sealems command.

Marcus ran ahead anyway with his sword. But when he tried to slash the sphere, a great big ZAP! sent Marcus flying, and the Lizzard landed on his back.

Prosper watched the lizardman land. "Sealam, do you have any ideas?"he said, turning away from the lizard's form.

Sealem said: "I think we better deal with that Umber Hulk first, before it can get that sphere where it's trying to get it. Company: Advance!"

Micheal said: "Wait! That sphere is a magical construct, and it's workings are unfamiliar to me. I don't know what it can do and I think it's powered by Drowish Magic. Hang on, I'm gonna cast Anti-Magic on it. That should de-power it. Here goes."
Moving his fingers in the correct patterns and uttering the correct arcane phrases, Micheal set up an Anti-Magic Sphere on the Silvery Sphere that the Umber Hulks had brought with them. And nothing happened.

Micheal said: "Ok... that should have worked. Why didn't that work? The only way it wouldn't work is if... is if my magic isn't powerful enough! That means there's some seriously powerful mages behind this thing."

With a "pop" an opening formed in the sphere. A hand emerged from one side... and then another from another side.. green hands, covered in sores and missing ransom digits. And then a face... a Zombie. The Zombies were trying to push there way out of the sphere!

Micheal took a look at the thing with his Astral Perception and said: "Aw no! I know what this is! That sphere is a portable Dimensional Compression Bubble! It's bigger on the inside than the outside! There could be thousands of Zombies in there. We've got to roll it back underground! It's our only chance!"

Captain Sealem said: "Ok, then! Tem, get your squad on that last Umber Hulk! Come on people, let's roll this thing back into the ground!"

Marcus got up in pain and helped Sealem and the guys roll the huge sphere. His back felt like it was going to break any minute.

"sbfrujhslkuygbew!!" yelled Tem, and dove on the Umber hulk, knocking it away from the ball. "Ixleflerb, you think you can copy whatever spell made the sphere? Could come in handy" he said to the other flayer. Then, Tem gave the Hulk a full nelson. Ixleflerb made a pincushion out of it, and Ixleflerb really punished it with his telekinetic fists spell.

"Learning the spell to make one of those spheres takes more time than we have," Taryn said. "I've got one that I don't need, anyway, if you really want one." Granted, remembering exactly where Taryn was storing her pocket dimension was a feat within itself. For all she knew, the planet they were on could be inside it. Once that thought completed itself, Taryn went back to pushing the sphere along with Sealem, his men, and Marcus. Acedia, lacking useful physical strength, was helping to guide the people pushing the sphere, and simultaneously trying not to be squished by it.

Prosper ran up the the ball, and seeing a zombie head begin to emerge, thrust his spear into the opening. He continued doing this while the sphere was being pushed.

The zombies muttered: "Brains.... must... eat.... brains......" with Prosper's spear-head planted firmly in a zombie's forehead. And then it got squished by the rolling of the ball, and Prosper's spear came loose. A slightly more muffled "... will eat your brains..." could be heard from underneath the sphere. The zombies were having a tough time pushing all the way through the surface of the sphere.

Micheal commented: "I bet the Umber-hulks were gonna tear open the sphere once they got it where they wanted it. It's a good thing Zombies are slow of both wit and movement, or we'd be in real trouble."

With much effort and considerable Zombie-poking, the team managed to roll the ball back into the hole it had emerged from. The ball disappeared down into the hole with a resounding ka-thunk! The zombies' cries of "... Brains! We eat your brains!... Must eat brains!" eventually fading into nothing. However, they was still a huge hole in the ground.

The Town Watch commander came up to the edge of the hole, with a squad of pikemen forming up behind him. "Well well; two dead monsters and a big hole in the ground. It seems the Heroes of Targos have saved us once again. Sergent, break out the shovels. We've got us some monsters to bury, and a convenient hole to put them in."

Captain Sealem said "We'd best be on our way now. It seems that the longer we remain in any one place, the more peril we put that place in."

With that, the party of adventurers left Targos and set out for the mountain known as White Dragon Peak. There was no actual road to go on though, only rough paths and overgrown trails. Getting a Dwarven Wagon through wasn't easy, but it was manageable.

Marcus carried Prosper on his back up to the mountain. He could have probably carried a few of the other party members, too.

Prior to leaving Targos, Eruantian got a close look at one of the dead umberhulks. Tem's group did good job of slaying it, considering its bowls were hanging out of its side. Among the various crushed bones, metal objects, and other various items that fell out, he found a very familiar horseshoe. The mystery of his missing wagon had apparently been solved.

<OOC>I hope I am not mistaken when I assume that this is a plausible scenario.</OOC>

A broken rapier, a half-digested tricorn hat, a tattered coat, whatever he could find was ruined... and had a terrible stench... Nothing was reusable but what few coins he recovered, which added up to a mere 5 gold and 17 silver. Eruantian practicly lost everything he ever had, save the shirt on his back and the ring on his finger. Life as he once knew it had come to an end.

On the trip to the mountain, Eruantian decided to ride on the back of Horin's wagon so he didn't have to walk. This allowed him to take off the ring without slowing the party down. Though very cold and and in much pain, Eruantian focused all his energy and will power towards trying not to appear as such. His grim personality was still strong enough to cause distrust of the others at that point, though as the ring's damage faded so did the memories. The distrust would fade as well.

Edit: Typo fix

<Wait, thats it? It seems all of our battles are easily won.>
Prosper had been roughly scooped up by an eager Marcus at the announcement of their departure. At first he had understandably protested, but he soon came to enjoy it. Prosper watched the walls of Targos dissapere in the distance. Wow, he thought. What a strange turn my life has taken. He settled into the rythem of Marcus's footsteps and stared into the distance, contemplating his new life.

<Yes, how about some truly horrid umber hulks to come along.> Tem's feet were seriously vibrating. "Am I the only one who notices these tremors?" ha said.

"I don't feel anything." Prosper said from the lizardmans broad back.

"I don't feel anything," Taryn remarked, although simply watching her feet would explain why - she apparently didn't touch the ground, as no trail of prints followed her. It's a trait of spectres; they leave no true footprints. If their footwear is real, it will leave a faint print; if the footwear is part of their manifestation, it will leave no mark. Taryn's sandals fell into the latter category. Real reed-mat sandals of the type she wore from this world's Orient fell apart too easily and were really more meant for formal, indoor events. She just happened to like the style and so added them to her visible manifestation ensemble.

A gray wolf trotted along a few paces behind Taryn. This was Acedia. The gray wolf form was the only form she could hold indefinitely, and four legs made travel in places where there are no paths much easier. She could also speak the common tongue in this form only.

The journey proceded well, and the group entered the vast pine-tree forest that lay between Targos and White Dragon Peak.

Drek said: "Carefull, there are signs of Orcish activity here. Looks like a Orcish hunting party was through here only a few minutes ago. Also, I think Tem is right: I do feel vibrations in the ground. Could be more of those Umber-Hulks down there. Watch yourselves, everyone."
