"Riiight. You're not fooling a psion, man." said Tem. "Now SLEEP!" He used mind control to put him to sleep.

Frankie immediately zonked out and started t muble incoherent things about sages and mind-flayers that I shall not repeat here.

Acedia nodded and turned to leave, and then realized...

"Err. What exactly does the Town Watch commander look like? And, um, where might I find him? Where might I find Captain Sealem, for that matter?" She looked sheepish.

Farnham replied: "Er, just ask any member of the town watch where he is and they'll take you to their commander if you explain the situation. Captaion Sealem was over at the Mayor's house, doing paperwork or something. He should still be there."
Suddenly, Captain Sealem came in the front door "Hey guys, I'm back already and... hey, what's going on here? Why is that guy tied up and who trashed the place?"
<GM's note: A few tables and chairs got broken during the fight, and Sam's blood is drying on the floor.>

Propser noticed something different about Captain Sealem, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Perhaps he was just in a different mood than usual, or maybe he'd changed his clothes or cut his hair.
Micheal was a bit tired from his spellcasting, but he too noticed something different about Captain Sealem. However, Micheal ignored it becasue he was more interested in the magic he was now sensing on Frankie: Something that wasn't there before he fell asleap (really fell asleap, that is). Micheal peered into the Manasphere to see where the magic was coming from.

Hey guys? Prosper thought. That's not the way Selam usually talks. Prosper shrugged it off but watched Selam closer.

Acedia noticed the weirdness too but also did not say anything, just leaving as soon as the way was clear. She found her way to the Town Watch commander and made the request to lock the gates in short order. On the way back to the tavern, she made a stop at the Mayor's house, just to see if Sealem was there or if the Mayor knew of his whereabouts.

Taryn had otherwise busied herself with another mysteriously-produced bottle of sake.

The Town Watch Commander, when asked to lock the gates, replied: "It's a bit of an unusually request, but I believe you when you say there's been a kidnapping, so we'll lock it down and go on full alert. Captain Saelem is at the Mayor's house. Best of luck, Miss."

Just outside the Mayor's house, Aedia saw Marcus strolling up the walk and Captain Saelem coming out the front door. Acedia immediately realized that this was NOT the same man she had seen enter the tavern. She didn't know how she knew it, but she was certain nonetheless.

Sealem said: "Ah, Miss Acedia, Mister Marcus, good afternoon. I did hear word that the Talismonger Sehran has fallen Ill. What news of his condition? I would go and pay my respects to the learned elder before we leave. Has Mister Maxwell procured the horses he sought to rent?"

"I do not know of the Talismonger's condition. As far as I know he is still alive, though there are more pressing matters than the health of the elderly at the moment. Maxwell is being held by a group of kidnappers. I was sent to tell the Town Watch to lock the gates and to find you and tell you to meet us outside the livery stable. And to make matters worse, there is someone doing a very poor job of impersonating you, sir, at the tavern right now," Acedia reported. "I'm to bring Marcus along as well. How lucky that he should show up. Marcus!"

OK; Taryn, Horin, you're with me. We're gonna go keep watch on that stable until our backup arrives, and then we hit the place and rescue Maxwell. Everyone clear on what they have to do?"

"Aye, and I have an idea as to how we can burst in, if you're willing to hear it."

"Sure, Horin. Let's hear it" replied Farnham.

"Alright, about six men would be best for this plan..." Horin paused, thinking of who to send where. "Two people, on of which would be me, would go through the back door, I'll need the man to have a bow if possible. In the meantime, you take the front door with the rest of your men, preferably swordsmen and maybe someone with a mace. On my call, or yours if you prefer it, I enter the back door, and have the archer shoot as many of the kidnappers as possible, for a diversion, you see? And as he does that, I slip around the outer wall and unlock the front door."

"You! Dark elf! Beat it! My vendetta against you'll have to be settled later." said Tem distractedly to Saelem. He didn't even have to read his mind to know it was the Drow... again.

The impostor realized he had been found out, and dropped the disguise. However, he wasn't a Drow as Tem had thought.
No, this was a Doppelganger, a strange kind of being that can assume the form of other men and masquerade as them. The have no mental powers to speak of, but they are extremely devious and can assume any humanoid form virtually at will. In the blink of an eye, the Doppelganger assumed Tem's physical form.

Just then, Micheal raised his hands and said: "HOLD! Evacuate the building, quickly! Our lives are in danger here. Frankie has been bound with a magical link that was dormant until the doppleganger entered the room. Now it's being used to center a massive buildup of Mana energy into him, and I can't stop it!"

Horin ran out of the building right behind Tem. "Pity, too bad he ends this way." And added: "No sense wallowing in our grief." And thought of something else. "Where's Sam?"

"Seems to me Sam retired to one of the inn rooms. This is probably not good," [s]Captain Obvious[/s] Taryn stated. "I could go and get him. All of the inn rooms have windows to the outside; Sam, being the proprietor, should have his own quarters, and they should be on the first floor. Saving him would take, oh, a minute tops." However, she made no heroic dash around to the back of the building to save Sam the Bartender. Her appalling lack of sympathy has done nothing but grow over the years.

Tem waited a few minutes. "Ixleflerb! C'mere!" he said, and said Flayer appeared next to him. "Yeah, Tem?" he said. "Cast some kind of resist magic move on me. Actually, Michael, don't you have an antimagic shell? I'm goin in after sam, and questioning that Doppleganger me."

Miceal said: "No time to cast Antimagic shell now. Just RUN!"
Farnham came to a decision quickly: "Everyone clear outta here: That's an order."
And with that, he and Tem ran into the back room where Sam's private quarters are.

An audible hum, growing louder by the second, could be hear coming from Frankie's direction and he was beginning to pulse with light.

Mysteriously, the Doppledanger had now vanished. Perhaps he was imitating a hat-rack or a floorboard now, but whatever had happened to him he was nowhere to be seen.

An instant later, a loud thump (like someone kicking a door open) was heard from the back room.... and then Frankie exploded!
The shutters on all the windows were smashed to pieces, the front door came off it's hinges, all the lamps were knocked off their perches, and the chairs and tables were sundered into a million little peices.

Micheal, who was still just outside the doorway when the blast hit, was thrown about a meter by the shockwave of the blast, landing on his chest and rolling with the impact. However, the tavern itself stayed in once piece (more or less) and by some miracle none of the lamps broke. "Micheal cleared his through and said: "Well, that wasn't so bad. I was sure the whole building was gonna..."

Before he could finish his sentence, the building erupted in a massive fiery explosion, totally destroying the tavern and raining flaming debris down in a random pattern of splintered wood and broken glass.

"... explode." mumbled Micheal, in shock after having been knocked down for the second time in less than a minute.

<Dun dun DUuuuunnnnn!!!>

"Eeeew..."said Tem, picking his way through the Frankie-bits,"I know I eat brains, but I don't look at them! This is gross." Tem had also been hurt, and a a wound along his tentacle; it was only a flesh wound.

"That's a shame," Taryn said, shaking her head a bit. "It was a nice little tavern." She had managed to avoid the glass, but had received a good share of wood projectiles, and therefore set about burning them off of her. This took roughly, oh, two minutes.

"What was that?" asked Acedia to no one in particular, having heard (and partially seen) the tavern exploding.

"SAM!!!" Eruantian shouted after being blown back by the explosion. He put on his ring and ran towards the burning planks, not noticing that putting on his ring completely removed the side effects caused by taking it off earlier. "Don't just stand there, people, look for him" Eruantian said as he began to extinguish flames with cold blasts.

Horin was just getting himself up, a rather large piece of wood had knocked him unconscious... "That was quite a blast." And ran over to where Sam would have been... After seeing a bit of cloth underneath. "Eruantian, over here."

Prosper laid facedown in the dirt. His arm was throbing painfully. "Ow." he said as he got up. The wound had reopened. "Where's Farnaham?" he asked.

"We may have to cauterize that," Taryn remarked offhandedly to Prosper, before joining in the search for Sam the bartender. It took a considerable amount of concentration to keep her inner fire from simply igniting every splintered piece of alcohol-splattered wood that touched her skin as she did so. "It'll be a miracle if that man survives," she muttered, with enough articulation to make herself understood to any who heard her sentiment.

Horin, who was quite a distance away, ran over, telling Eruantain: "See if that's him, I couldn't see through the flames." And asked Prosper: "What did you say, lad?"

Prosper shrugged off Taryn's comment and said, "I was just asking where Farnaham was. I thought I saw him go into the building after Sam." Prosper suddenly realized that Farnaham could be dead. "Oh no! You don't think.." He couldn't say it.

Horin didn't respond, instead, he breathed in deeply and yelled at the top of his lungs, "FFFAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRNNNNHHAAAAAAMMMMM!!!" Loud enough the remains of the Tavern <He is a Dwarf, you know>. He turned back to Prosper: "I wouldn't think so, the blast was powerful, but Farnham looked as though he could have withstood alot." He said, in an effort to cheer up the boy.

Taryn winced. "Gah, was that really necessary?!" she shouted back at Horin, before going back to digging for bodies. It's like bobbing for apples, except more morbid, and without as much pre-bitten fruit.

Unfortunately, I as the mun cannot say what Taryn does or does not find, because the characters of Farnham and Sam aren't within my jurisdiction. o_o;
