"Oh, Frankie, are you SURE I'm not bluffing?" said Tem. He wrapped his tentacles around the top of Frankie's head, but kept his mouth firmly shut. He had no intention of actually eating his brains, and Tem telepathied everyone else that.

Frankie let out a high pitched, girlish, scream. "No, nooooo get him off me. I'll talk, I'LL TALK!"

Farnham, pulled up a chair and said. "I dunno, Frankie. Good, fresh, human brains are hard to come by. Make it worth my while and I'll call him off."
A terrified Frankie said: "Anything, just get him off me."
Farnham snaped his fingers and said: "Take five, Tem."

Tem and Horin could see that Fanham was playing along with Tem's fake 'brain eating' display and was using it to maximum effect. Not only had Frankie cracked, but he was suitably disgraced as well.

Tem, however, failed. "BWAH HA HA HA! PUNY FARNHAM, I SHALL EAT THE MAN'S BRAINS, NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY! EVEN IF I-zzzzzzzzz..." said Tem. He faked falling asleep and narcolepsy. He fell off Frankie, too.

Acedia found her way up onto a rafter. From there, she could see the whole stable. Maxwell was bound and gaged, and had been beaten severely about the face and chest. He was unconcious on the floor, laying on his back. One of his kidnappers was standing guard over him with a longsword. The rest were keeping watch at the doors and windows. There were six in all: The one standing guard over Maxwell, two by the barn door, and one each at the three windows. (The back door, however, was unguarded.)
The only one with a sword was the one guarding Maxwell, but the others looked like they had concealed weapons under their clothes. The two by the barn door had big wooden clubs. They all looked like they were waiting for something.
One of the kidnappers by the window whispered: "Hey, don'cha think Frankie should have made contact by now?"
The one with the sword replied: "Have some patience. Negotiating a ransom demand can take time."
The other whispered back: "I'm just saying..."
The swordsman said: "And I'm just telling you: Frankie and me has this all planned out, so shut yer yap and do as your told."
The other man didn't reply, but he looked like he didn't like being talked to in that way.

After scurrying around, to possibly catch a glimpse of any possible weapons hidden in, say, piles of straw or feeding troughs, and satisfied that there was no such danger, she made the above mental notes and turned to leave. She ended up having to dig herself a way out, as she could not find the little gap by which she had entered in the first place. Nevertheless, Acedia started off for the place she'd shifted post-haste, as that was where her clothes were, only to discover that they weren't there. Resourceful Taryn must have taken them back to the tavern, she reasoned, and so she set off for that building, hoping the medallion's power would hold out until then.

She scurried into the bar. Taryn noticed and indicated that her garments were behind the bar. About a minute after the large rodent made its way over the counter, a mostly-dressed Acedia popped her head up. All she had to do was fasten the buttons on the fitted sleeveless jacket that passed for a bodice. After finishing that task, she got to her feet and smoothed down her torn and fraying skirts.

"Find anything?" asked Taryn, in a voice soft enough that only she and Acedia could hear.

"I found Maxwell," Acedia said in an equally soft voice. "He's not doing too well."

"Dead?"

"No. Just battered and unconscious."

"Oh. That's good, sorta. You should probably be reporting this to Farnham."

Acedia nodded and got out from behind the bar and walked up to Farnham.

Horin leaned over to Farnham "Mind if I give it a go? I'll get him to talk, if you want me to." Horin sensed someone behind him and Farnham. "Ah, Acedia, did you find anything?" Horin seemed to forget that Farnham was in charge, not him...

After overhearing what Taryn told Acedia, Eruantian decided it would be best for Prosper and him to head towards the tavern since they then had good a reason to do so. The problem was that the two were the walking wounded. Or rather, Prosper was the walking wounded and Eruantian was the half-frozen-half-elf. Either way, neither was capable of moving quickly any time soon without some sort of consequence.

Acedia nodded. "Michael was right about the livery stable. There are six men in there standing guard; one has a longsword, two have clubs, and three appear to be unarmed though they likely have concealed weapons of some kind. Maxwell is in the stable, in poor condition. I'm not much of a strategist, but it seems like it would be fairly easy to get /into/ the stable to retrieve Maxwell. Getting out, however, is another matter entirely," she reported, voice still quiet. Part of it was unease at Frankie's presence; part of it was a residual side-effect of the rat pendant.

"Aye, one of us should check on Prosper and Eruantian, although you may have need of my assistance here, I can break the doors open with my magic, and it should stun them long enough for you to grab Maxwell and get out."

"The back door is unguarded. Magic may not be required. Besides, you have to be suffering from some kind of fatigue - you've healed two people already today."

"Three," Taryn corrected her. "There was a fight here a little while ago. Sam attempted to get involved and got himself cut."

"Ooh. Still, that's three people."

"Yes, although I could still do it, if needed, as a last resort." Horin said. "Even if I don't, if there is any fighting, I would prefer to be here where my services may be needed, whether it be fighting or healing."

"We'll need a plan, soon. Maxwell was beaten up pretty badly, so you'll likely have another patient on your hands before day's end." Acedia shrugged a little and sat down at a table. "Never seen a tavern so vacant," she remarked absently. It was true - the tavern was comparatively deserted.

Quickly, Farnham expained what had happened and who Frankie was.
"Eruntian, have you seen Marcus or Captain Sealem? I have a feeling we're gonna need their particular skills very soon. Still, we can't wait for them. If we don't get Maxwell out of there soon, he may end up dead."

"Well, I think the only reason we're even keeping Frank here is his fear of de-brainification. I don't think I should go." said Tem, snapping out of his "narcolepsy".

Farnham returned to Frankie: Any more of your play-mates we need to know about, Frankie?"
Frankie respond: "No, there's just the six you already know about. We snuck into town before the incident with that Drow-mage and hid out during the orc's seige. When we found out you had been rewarded in gold by Lord Dunmoor, we figured you were ripe for plundering. Guess I miscalculated, huh?"
Farnham seemed to belive him, and nodded: "Good boy. You get to keep your brains for now."
He turned to the rest of the group present: "Alright everyone, listen up. Acedia, I need you to go alert the Town Watch commander. Tell him to lock down the town gates, then go find Captain Sealem and have him and his men meet us outside the livery stable. If you run into Marcus on the way, grab him and bring him with you. Tem, Eruntian; you guys stay here and keep an eye on Frankie. Make sure he doesn't try anything, and keep him tied up at all times." Farnham picked up Frankie's sword off the floor and handed it to Eruntian, saying: "You may need this. OK; Taryn, Horin, you're with me. We're gonna go keep watch on that stable until our backup arrives, and then we hit the place and rescue Maxwell. Everyone clear on what they have to do?"
