Horin swung his hammer again, just a moment before Tem's cam crashing down on the man's head. "Look out!" It was too late. The Flayer made full contact with Horin's hammer, knocking him across the room. "Sorry 'bout that."

The masked man deftly deflected Tem's attack with a motion of his forearm, but this let him open to an attack by Farnham. The tip of Farmham's blade neatly sliced into the masked Man's face, leaving a gash that ran from the ear down to the jawbone.

Farnham said to Tem and Horin: "Outflank him, guys: He can't defend both his front and his back at the same time."

Just then, Micheal came down from upstairs where he had been packing his stuff. Seeing the battle, he cast his Telekenetic Fists spell at the Masked Man. "Let's see how you handle an attack that you can't block, you bully."

The Masked man became visibly panicked. He was now both outnumbered and outgunned, and he knew it.

Tem, using his telekinesis, grabbed a table and sent it crashing down on the man, and making a cut identical to farnham's on the other side.<10 bucks to whoever knows where that's from>

Horin went around the opposite side of the man, pulling a small axe from his belt. "Today you will taste death." He started swinging the axe quickly in one hand, getting closer and closer to the man, hoping that Farnham would finish him soon.

The table that Tem droped on the Masked Man's head, combined with the pummeling that he was taking from Micheal's spell were too much for the masked man. Overwhelemed by the number and intensity of his attackers, the masked man's guard came down long enough for Farnham to disarm his opponent. With a quick flick of his wrist, Farnham spun the Masked Man's sword out of his hand.
Farnham quickly put his Rapier-point firmly to the masked man's chest and said "Don't move, you feind."
The masked man put up his hands, saying: "Alright, you've got me. I surrender."
Farnham looked at Tem and Horin: "Horin see what you can do for Sam there. Tem, tie this guy up and watch him close. If he tries anything funny, bash him one."

Taryn slipped into the bar at this point. "Well done," she commended them. "Now what, exactly, prompted that extraordinary display of fighting prowess?" she asked, making her way over to the Masked Man™ and looking down at him disdainfully. "Did you just pick a random civilian to practice on?"

Meanwhile, wherever Eruantian and Prosper and Acedia happen to be.

"I do hope Sehran is alright," Acedia said absently. "And that we can leave this town and get on with the quest...whatever the objective is now...relatively quickly. We were going to leave two days ago." It's difficult to tell if she's talking to herself or not.

"Did he say where his cronies are holding Maxwell? Because that might be a little important if we're to find and rescue him."

<Well, the masked man did not use the word "kidnap" but if you read the post on the previous page where he demands money and claims that Farnham will never find where his partners are keeping Maxwell, it's not hard to understand that he's essential admitting to being a kidnapper.>
Farnham replied: "No. He says he doesn't know. Even if that's true, though, he must know something that will lead us to Maxwell. First, though, lets see what's behind that mask of his."

Farnham ripped the mask off, and was surprised by what was behind it. "You.. I know you. You're Frankie Thuoi! Geez, former mob boss, hitman, asssasin and sabouture reduced to kidnapping for profit. I heard you were dead."
Frankie nodded: "Yeah, well, it's been a lousy year."
Farnham said: "How did you escape the hangman's noose, Frankie?"
Frankie replied: "Let's just say I paid off the right people. Look, you want Maxwell back alive, and I wanna avoid another date with the hangman. What say we make a deal?"
Farnham laughed, darkly: "You've got some real stones on you, I'll give you that Frankie. But, I ain't making no deals with you. Your pals can't have gotten far, and the Town Watch still has the gates closely guarded. If Maxwell is in this town, we can find him. Matter of fact, I bet Micheal could do one of his magic things and find Maxwell quick as you can blink."
Frankie replied: "I shouldda known. Mages. I hate Mages."
"Shaddup, Frankie." Scowled Farnham.

Micheal tilted his head to one side and said: "Well, I dunno. I mean, I could do an astral projection, but I've never made a close enough study of Maxwell's aura to have much of a chance of recognizing it out in Astral Space."

Farnham said: "Well, could you look for a group of men with one who's being held captive? That should narrow the search down nicely."

Micheal said: "Hrm.. OK, I'll try."

Micheal sat down, closed his eyes, and said: "This might take a while. Don't disturb me while I'm doing this..." and he seemed to zone out. Only Micheal could see the Astral world that unfolded to him. He stayed still and unmoving (although still breathing).

Farnham turned to Horin Hammerhand and Sam the Bartender: "How's Sam doing, Horin?"

Taryn listened to the exchange between Farnham and Frankie in silence. Then she watched Michael for about forty-five seconds before getting bored and finding something else to be interested in. Like Sam's condition. "I thought I smelled blood," she remarked. "Just couldn't see Sam from the door. Is he okay?"

Horin responded to Farnham, "better, he'll be alright, not much scarring either, they were nice clean cuts, much better than Prosper's wound." How about something to drink? I'm feeling a bit weak."

Thanks to Horin, Sam the bartender was conscious once again and his bleeding had stopped. He went to his room to rest, but not before he poured himself a stiff drink and downed it. "For medicinal purposes, you understand."

Micheal came out of his astral-perception trance and slowly stood up: "Well, I think I may know where they are. There's a cluster of men in the livery stable and they seem out of place there. Something odd about the way they're positioned, not like they're customers or staff."

Farnham replied: "Well Maxwell was headed there to rent some horses. Ok, let's check it out. Taryn, go tell Acedia that we need her right away. Her mouse form could easily infiltrate the stables and her subterfuge skills make her the obvious candidate to do a little spying on whoever is in there. Primarily, we need to know if Maxwell is being held there or not; If he's not there and we raid the place, we may spook the kidnappers into executing him."

Farnham turned to Tem: "Tem, do you think you could have a look inside Frankie's mind? Anything he knows about the kidnappers could be useful to us."

"Sure, but first, a few other interrogation methods." said Tem. He showed Frankie his mouth."Now, you wouldn't want me to have another snack, would you?" He put an image of what Frankie would see if Tem did.

"Mouse form? Oh, that one. It's a rat, actually, but I understand what you mean now." Taryn nodded decisively and exited the tavern, striking off quickly for the encampment where Horin's tent was - she didn't know they'd left already.

It didn't matter - Taryn ran into the group on the way! Thankfully, this didn't take long. A curt greeting to Prosper and Eruantian was made, and then Taryn explained the situation to Acedia in one, possibly two jet-streamed breaths.

Before Taryn finished her last word, Acedia had become a large brown rat and was scuttling off toward the livery stable. She squeezed through a gap in the wall as quietly as possible and then tried to find a suitable vantage point from which to spy on the small congregation.

Frankie became visibly uncomfortable at the sight of Tem's mouth, but said: "Yu... you're bluffing. I mean, your a High Flayer, not a Dark Flayer, right? High Flayers don't eat human brains. Besides, you guys are heroes and all that. You wouldn't just stand by and let a Flayer eat someone's brains... right?"
Despite (or perhaps because of) Frankie's words, it was plain to Tem that Frankie was more than just a little scared of Tem at the moment. There were beads of sweat forming on his forehead and he was very tense around the face and neck. His mind was radiating so much fear that Tem didn't even need to read his mind to know that he was afraid.

Acedia found her way up onto a rafter. From there, she could see the whole stable. Maxwell was bound and gaged, and had been beaten severely about the face and chest. He was unconcious on the floor, laying on his back. One of his kidnappers was standing guard over him with a longsword. The rest were keeping watch at the doors and windows. There were six in all: The one standing guard, two by the barn door, and one each at the three windows. The back door, however, was unguarded. The only one with a sword was the one guarding Maxwell, but the others looked like they had concealed weapons under their clothes, and the two by the barn door had big wooden clubs. They all looked like they were waiting for something.
One of the kidnappers by the window whispered: "Hey, don'cha think Frankie should have made contact by now?"
The one with the sword replied: "Have some patience. Negotiating a ransom demand can take time."
The other whispered back: "I'm just saying..."
The swordsman said: "And I'm just telling you: Frankie and me has this all planned out, so shut yer yap and do as your told."
The other man didn't reply, but he didn't look like he liked being talked to like that.
