Taryn, being as she was airborne, had wheeled around so she could see what was going on with the wolf in the brush. Or at least hear it. Continuing to fire off flaming arrows of DOOMâ„¢, she kept an ear on the struggle below her. Prosper had no chance of getting out of there without help from anyone. Marcus was likely closer and more apt to help the boy than she herself was, though she could easily land in the brush and save him if the need arose. |

Marcus heard Prosper and came running with his sword, ready to strike. With his impeccable night vision, he could see the Wolf from far away. "There it is...I'm ready...COME AND GET ME, WOLFY!" |

Prosper reached his spear just when the Dire wolf bowled into him. He felt teeth rip into his left arm. With a scream of pain and furry he lashed out blindy. One of his attacks hit the beast just below the ear, on the neck. The elven spear just barely pirced the thick black fur and skin, causing no real damage but having the disired effect. The wolf let go for a split second, allowing Prosper to spring to his feet, his left arm dangleing uselessly at his side and bleeding profusly. Prosper shifted his stance and focused on the wolf. He couldn't win this, but he hoped he could put up a long enough fight. Just then he heard Marcus roar through the trees on his left. The wolf and the boy looked up. |

Speeding through the trees in a reptilian green blur came Marcus. He leapt up and took a big swing into the demon dog's back. Hoepfully he made a good connection. |

Marcus's blade slashed into the Dire Wolf, sending fur and blood flying. The Dire Wolf yelped and turned it's attention away from Prosper and toward Marcus. Marcus found himself face-to-face with a giant snarling beast of a wolf that was around 8 feet tall at the shoulder. It lunged at him, and the two engaged in a furious melee. Maxwell and his group were closing on the wolf, but they were still too far away to attack with their weapons. Meanwhile, the surviving Drow had reformed around their mage and were attempting to protect him while he cast a spell. |

Oh, and we don't have a healer in the party yet so you might want to consider playing a Divine Magic spellcaster (Cleric, Druid, etc.): They get healing spells, anti-undead abilities & spells, summoning spells, etc. In other words, they get the kinds of spells that the Mages & Sorcerers don't>. Prosper lay bleeding on the ground. No healer was to be found. Marcus and the Dire Wolf went round and round. Micheal and Hall saw a Drow trying to cast a spell, standing on a mound. They must now choose: Stop the mage or attack the hound? This poetry brought to you by: A rhyming dictionary I found. Now it's your turn, so upon your keyboard you must pound! |

Drek ran through the trees, his bow at the ready, looking for enemies. As he ran, he saw Marcus battling the Dire Wolf. The elf pulled a tar-soaked cloth arrow and lit it with his flint and steel. He quickly notched the arrow, aimed at the Dire Wolf, and fired. The beast roared as the flaming arrow struck it's flank. |

Eruantian found himself next to his wagon just outside the fight, not knowing what course of action to take. Should he fight the Drow or the Dire wolf? Should he use his rapier or his falchion? Should he don his armor? Was there enough time for that? Too many questions raced through his mind. Then he saw Drek hit the Dire Wolf with a flaming arrow, which gave him the answer. He remembered the fire making supplies he had in his wagon, including a few bottles of lamp oil he bought just prior to leaving Targos. As the Dire Wolf was about to charge in the direction the flamming arrow came from, a bottle of oil hit it right below the ear. "Hey, Demon Dog! Look over here!" shouted Eruantian. When the Dire Wolf turned to face the half elf, another bottle of oil shattered right between its eyes, drenching its face in oil. Eruantian continued to shout "Come on, you mutt! You know you want a bite out of me!" As Eruantian continued to throw bottles of oil at the Dire Wolf, it charged towards him, which was exactly what Eruantian wanted. "*Gulp* I hope this works" said Eruantian, nervously. When the Dire Wolf came close, Eruantian pulled out a torch and yanked his ring off of the chain around his neck. His intention was to throw the torch right in the face of the Dire Wolf, hoping it would have a painful effect on the beast. He lit the torch with blue flame and pulled his arm back, ready to throw it. However, Eruantian misjudged the speed of the Dire Wolf. Before he knew what had happened, he found himself pinned to the ground under one of the Dire Wolf's paws and his torch a few feet out of his reach.
As the Wolf looked into Eruantian's eyes, Eruantian found that the more he looked the less he could move. Some sort of power was coming over him, preventing him from moving. What he did not know was that this was the power of the Dire Wolf to make anyone it looks at freeze with fear. Unlike most of the other members of the party, Eruantian was not wearing one of the Herbalist's devices, which made him vulernable. Knowing that its prey was powerless to struggle, the Dire Wolf moved its paw off of Eruantian. As it opened its mouth and lowered its head to eat the half elf, Eruantian screamed and followed a gut reaction to stick his hands up in the air, trying in vain to block the wolf. Fortunately, he was still wearing his ring. His hand, glowing a bright blue radiance, touched the oil-drenched fur next to the Dire Wolf's mouth, which was set ablaze with a cold, blue flame. <OOC> I think Sarge should describe what happens next.</OOC> |

{ Somm-1 has mad MSPaint skillz. Nice honesty button.
And Sarge, nice poem. XD Variety is the spice of life, after all. } Taryn had lowered out of the air substantially to watch the wolf battle. She'd grown rather bored with it (??!!) and now turned to face the Drow again. "Dare I risk setting their mage's face ablaze?" she questioned herself, looking down at the bow in her hands. "...I dare." She grinned and ascended again for a clearer shot, nocking a flaming arrow and firing it quickly, aiming directly for the Drow mage. Unless there is a physical or magical shield in place that blocks unenchanted weapons, there is no excuse for that arrow to miss its mark. |

Marcus had been clinging to the Wolf's back since Prosper had fallen. When Drek's flaming arrow hit the beast, Marcus jumped off and ran a good five yards from it when Eruantian came up. "I'll take Prosper back to the Elves." Marcus said, taking the boy under his arm. "Think you can handle the Wolf?" As Prosper's eyes finally close into a coma, the Lizzardboy ran in the Captain's direction as fast as he could... "Look out!" A Lizzardman cried. Marcus collided head-on with a tall Black Claw and landed on the ground, taking Prosper with him. |

As the Cold Flame hit the oil-soaked Dire Wolf, it erupted into a frosty blaze of blue. The Dire Wolf's eyes and the fur on it's head were soaked in the oil that Eruantian had thrown at it, and they instantly became frosted over and frozen solid. The Wolf jumped up and screamed in pain as the biting cold dug into it's eyes. Blinded, tried to roll it's head on the ground to put get the ice off, but this only made the Blue Flame spread. Soon, it's whole head was ablaze with frosty flame, and all the Dire Wolf's contortions to get the ice off only made it spread further. It wasn't long before the wolf lay still on the ground, dead and burning with ice. Meanwhile, the Drow Mage was contending with Taryn. Her flaming arrows hit him well enough, but they simply bounced off. Seems he was wearing some sort of armor that was protecting him from projectiles. Whatever spell he was casting sure seemed to take a long time to cast, but when he finished it, the Drow Mage vanished in a wave of blue light. Micheal and Hall knew what the Drow Mage had cast: It was a teleporation spell. Must have 'ported himself out of here. Apparently, though, he hadn't been powerfull enough to teleport his fellow Drow as well. They still stood there, waiting in a circle, their faces grim and determined, heir swords drawn and sheilds up. The Black Claw mercenary that Marcus had (literally) ran into said (in Lizzardspeak): "Get the human boy to the healer. There, in Lord Dunmoor's main camp. You can't miss him, he's the only Dwarf you'll see. We'll deal with these dark elves, brave one. Strength to your circle." With that, the mercenaries and the rest of Lord Dunmoor's forces moved to complete their encirclement of the Drow warriors. Captain Sealem ran beside Marcus: "Prosper! He's hurt badly. Qucikly, we need to get him to the herbalist. Perhaps he has a healing potion we can obtain. What did the Black Claw fighter say? I don't speak the Lizzard-tounge." <GM's Note: Yes, our healer is gonna be a Dwarf. Because he PM'd me and said as much. Shortness and Axes and Beards, Oh My! >
Maxwell and Farnham went over to Micheal and Hal. Maxwell said: "Think you two can immobilize those Drow? They'd be a lot more valuable alive than dead at this point. Perhaps we can interrogate them and get some answers from them. Besides, I'm sure Suldeneselar would pay well for some live captured Drow. There must be a bounty on them by now, yes?" |

Upon seeing her arrows have no effect, which has never happened before, Taryn swore, loudly and colorfully. Ladylike, isn't she? The tall woman landed near the rest of the party, still smoldering. The bow had been put away somewhere. "The wolf is dead, at least," she muttered to herself, taking a glance at the canine's frozen carcass. "Wouldn't that have been ironic if I had known it," she continued, not caring enough at the moment to go see if the dire wolf burning in ice over there was in fact the dire wolf that she had befriended as a youth. "Unlikely," she reasoned. It had been quite a formidable number of years since that event. Dire wolves weren't immortal as far as she knew. Sighing, she went to find Maxwell, and found him. "Excuse me, Maxwell? My purpose here was to act as a guide for your party to go find and kill that wolf. Now that it is dead and your original goal accomplished, what is your next destination? I ask only because if you have a guide or escort to wherever you go next, then my services are unnecessary and I will be on my way." { Let's hear it for super-oblique references to posts from 12 pages ago! o-o Seriously. Page 30, near the bottom, Taryn explains that she'll be happy to lead the group through the woods to the wolf, but says her job is done once that wolf is in sight. But, since they never struck out into the wilderness, her job is done now that that wolf is dead. She did say that if the group doesn't dissolve after the wolf was killed that she might go on with them, though. } |

<GM's NOtes: OK, people: It's Level-up time! End of chaper comes as soon as we get some loose ends ties up (deal with the Drow, get Prosper some healing, ponder what happened Tem (Tem's MIA, in case you hadn't noticed)... etc. -Drek is now experienced enough that he can pick one of the following Ranger/Archer special abilities: Bullseye: Any time the character to shoot an arrow at a target, he can shoot that arrow at a specific part of the target at only a slight increase in the difficulty of the shot. Without this ability, doing this kind of thing is much harder. This ability can be used at any time with no restrictions or associated fatigue. Trick Shots: The character has leaned how to do various unconventional shots with his bow, including: Firing two arrows at a time at the same target and firing an arrow so it ricochets off another object and strikes the intended target. While these trick shot can be amusing to bystanders, at fairs, and in archery competitions they can also be handy to use in some tricky situations. Uncanny Tracking The character is able to discern the passing and direction of any known quarry even if there are no tracks to follow. To do this, he need only know beforehand the general characteristic of his quarry (weight, height, ambulatory manner, etc.) and be in the general area (that is, 5 to 10 square kilometers, depending on terrain and the weather) that his quarry has passed through in the last two weeks. This ability can be used at will, with little or no preparation, and can be done on the move. It will not work in urban areas or while indoors, but it will work underground. It does not cause extra fatigue but the actual act of pursuing the quarry likely will be somewhat fatiguing. Rapid Fire (2x) The number of arrows the character can notch and fire while using this ability is substantially higher than otherwise, up to double the normal amount he would be otherwise be able to shoot. This comes with a slight accuracy penalty, but it is no more fatiguing than normal-speed fire. This ability is required for learning the Rapid Fire (3x) and Spread Fire abilities that are available at higher levels. This ability may be used once per half-hour, for up to ten minutes at a time. -Marcus is now experienced enough that he can pick one of the following Lizzardman-Fighter special abilities: Beserker Rage The character can work himself into a rage, by means of which he will temporally gain a substantial increase his strength, fighting prowess, speed, ability to dodge, and tolerance for pain. While in this state, the character will experience difficulty in telling friend from foe, and is likely to attack whatever target of opportunity is in range once the initial target is either subdued, dead, or beyond attack. The rage will last for 10 minutes, at which time the character will be only temporarily fatigued (he will need to either rest for about five minutes or suffer a penalty to his speed and fighting prowness untill he does rest). This ability can be used once per half-hour, up to a maximum of five times per day. Note that the Mage spells "Charm Person", "Pool Of Calm" and "Sleep" and the Clerical spells "Calming Chime" and "Silent Stillness" can all negate this ability and return the character to a non-enraged state. Lesser Cleave The character has become so proficient with his chosen weapons that he has learned how to attack several foes at once with one swipe of his weapon(s). Any time two or more foes attempt to melee with the character at the same time, the character may choose to attack two at the same time with no penalty to his fighting prowess. This ability is required for learning the Greater Cleave and Whirlwind Attack abilities at higher levels. Blind Fighting The character has mastered the relevant techniques necessary to successfully fight while blinded or while fighting invisible opponents. Moreover, the character is never caught flatfooted or surprised by invisible opponents, and his fighting prowess is not lessened when fighting blind. The ability is always in effect, and does not cause any fatigue. This ability is required for learning the Blade Dancer and Silent Sword abilities at higher levels. Micheal has now gained access to Basic Metamagical abilities. He may pick one of the following special abilities, as well as another cantrip from the previously-published list. Planar Awareness This Metamagical Ability grants the Mage the ability to perceive and comprehend planes of existence beyond his own. A Mage who has this Metamagical ability can cast spells that Mages who do not have this ability cannot cast (he must still learn the spells normally, though.) They are: Planar Injunction, Planar Disjunction, Plane Walking, Dimension Door, Blink, Greater Projection Mirror Self, Teleport Self, Teleport Other, Mass Teleportation, Gate, Summon Glabazu, Summon Pit Fiend, Time Stop, Summon Greater Elemental (any), and Ethereal Body. This Metamagical ability can also be used to examine the other planes for signs of spellcasting effects orignating from those planes, but in and of itself this ability does not grant the mage the ability to actually leave this plane (that's what Plane Walking is for). Quicken Spell This Metamagical ability allows the mage to casue any sustainabile spell he casts to become self-sustaining. If he chooses to do this, the spell leaves his controll and becomes a seperate entity out of the caster's control but still trying to full-fill the spellcaster's orignial intent <GM's Note: In effect, the GM decides what the spell does from then on>. Once a sustainable spell has been Quickened, the mage need no longer concentrate on the spell and is then free to cast spells that are exclusive-cast. The Quickened spell will continue to operate indefinately or until cancelled by the appropriate counter spell. The Mage can un-quiken and regain control of the spell by simply casting the same spell again with the Quickening effect as his target. This metamagical ability can be used at will, at any time, with no penalties to fatigue. Magic Deffense A mage who has this Metamagical Ability can expend some of his willpower to attempt to casue an incoming hostile spell or spell -like effect to fail. The more powerfull the oposing spellcaster is, the harder it will be to casue his sopell to fail. This ability works on ANY kind of magic, and the ability is automaticly avilable even if the mage cannot see the source of the spellcasting nor trhe actual spell effect: It's enough to be the target of a hostile incomeing spell for this ability to be useable to the character. Masking A mage who has this Metamagical ability can mask his effect on the Manasphere, effectively hiding his spellcasting signature from other Manashpere-aware creatures. This means that any time the character casts a spell he is harder for other mages to detect than he would otherwise be. However, plane-aware mages can peirce this masking by looking for the mage's impact on the Astral or Ethereal planes. Even then, however, a Masked mage is still very hard to detect. This Metamagical ability is always on and cannot be turned off or lessened, even when the Masked mage is not awake. NOTE: Mages who have Masking can never gain Planar Awareness and vice versa; the two abilities are mutually exclusive. Prosper and Acedia are now both experienced enough that they can pick two of the following Thief/Rouge abilities each: Move without sound The rouge can move so softly that no one can hear him when he moves. This greatly improves the chances that the rouge will be able to sneak by undetected. This ability can be used at will, but might not always succeed. Backstabing (4x) The rouge can backstab any opponent he has snuck up on undetected. If he succeeds, he does quadruple the damage he would do otherwise. This ability can be used whenever the rouge is hiding from hostiles. As the rouge gains experience, he gains access to more powerful versions of this ability Hide in plain sight The rouge has studied enough misdirection techniquies that he can make himself unnoticed even when he is out in the open. He will blend into his surroundings and appear to be just be part of the scenery. The chance of success is directly proportional to the number of potential distractions in the area he wishes to hide in. This ability cannot be used when the rouge is actively trying to hide in the conventional sense. Moreover, this ability can only be used when the rouge has had an appropriate amount of time and material necessary to blend into his surroundings, and so it cannot be used in combat. Hide in shadows This ability can be used by the rouge to make himself unseen by using shadow and darkness to full advantage. It can be used in concert with the Backstabing and Move Without Sound abilities, if the rouge has those as well. This ability must be actively used, and cannot be used if there is no shadow or darkness to hide in. One cannot Hide In Shadows and Hide In Plain Sight at the same time. Espionage The rouge who has this ability has learned how to successfully pretend to be someone he or she isn't, how to spy on other people without being detected, and how to obtain secrets. Characters who don't have this skill are amateurish spies at best. Detect/Remove Traps A rouge who has this skill knows what to look for and how to find and remove various traps without setting them off. This skill is always active unless the character is actively using some other skill or is involved in combat. Eruantian may now choose to become a full-fleddged swordsman, pikeman, archer or maceman. (Means he becomes proficient with his chosen weapon type and looses his previous movement penalties when in armor). He also gains the following Special Skill: The Ring Awakes Eruantian has discovered that he has a special connection to his magic ring. He can now use his ring to summon a blast of cold air directly from the ring. He is mystified as to why he didn't know how to do this before. Hall just joined, so he donesn't have enough experience to level up yet. And we're eagerly awaiting the appearance of a certain dwarf/cleric (druid?). Soonest. |

The act of doing so caused her to break the glamour over her hair. The dark brown color faded and revealed the bright crimson that was her natural color. <CURSE YOU VACATIONS!! Let's just say Tem has misunderstood Maxwell's intentions, and has fought on the astral plane the entire time. But, now, I think I'll do a bit of sadness, and most likely Tem splitting from the group.> As Tem walked over to the Dire Wolf's body, he saw it twitch. "What the...?" he muttered. Then he noticed a tent nearby, decorated with several things to make it look like the warchief was gone. He slowly walked in. The tentacle.. mounted on the wall... at last. He grabbed the tentacle. Tem thought about returning to town, but then, 'I let them down. Prop's half-alive, Marcus hates me, and I never helped them on any visible level.' he thought, 'I'll have to just revive myself and go back to the only place I can go. Squiddly man Mountain.' He reached for the tentacle, and reattached it. All a sudden, where the two parts met, there became a shining light. From that point, cracks spread all along his body like spiderweb, and then, he shattered. * * * When the light cleared, there was a barrel-chested High Flayer and his men, all resplendent in battered but still glorious golden Hardite armor, and deep red capes. Tem removed his helmet, and looked at his hand. It felt good to be back in the lifeland. He turned to his men, "Alright men, I know you're excited, but I think we need to get back to squiddly man mountain. Ixleflerb, you still remember how to teleport us, right? "Yessir!!" said the one known as Ixleflerb, a smaller and almost stooped Flayer, with slightly lighter armor. "Fornechk, What of your weapons? Are they still there?" said Tem. "Oui, General Tem." Said Fornechk, the Flayer next to Ixleflerb, who was very tall and wiry, with several bows of the normal- cross- and composite- variety. "Bob, how beguiling are ya still?"said Tem. "I've been practicing in the afterlife, so even more so than before!" said Bob, the only female there, and by Flayer standards, she was one hot momma."Alright Guys, let's get outta here!!" he said. And with that, Ixleflerb and the rest of them disappeared in a cloud of smoke. <Okay, so here's the stats for Tem's squad: Ixleflerb: He is a very powerful mage, who has the special ability to copy up to any 5 spells he sees. Because of the handicap thereof he favors 3 spells, which he keeps as scrolls. They are: Needle Storm Jolt Telekinetic fists Fornechk: He's a ranger, like Drek, but specializing in innnacurate combat-firing. Because of his connection to the ethereal plane, he can make up to 5 arrows at a time. Bob: Her special class is like a rougue, but specializes in making people do what she wants. She is very charismatic, and has a permanent enchantment about her that makes her look like a member of the moast common race in 50 yards. And, if all else fails, she also has limited mind control. One more note: I just controlled them to introduce them. From here out They're NPCs.> |

The Ring Awakes Eruantian has discovered that he has a special connection to his magic ring. He can now use his ring to summon a blast of cold air directly from the ring. He is mystified as to why he didn't know how to do this before. <OOC> I was thinking about my character's development and I think this will work fairly well with what I had in mind. I'll reveal which proficiency I choose at the proper time.</OOC> While everyone else was discussing the whereabouts of Tem, Eruantian was still lying on the same spot on the ground where he had been put under the Dire Wolf's power, still wearing his magic ring. His face still showed an expression of sheer terror as if the Dire Wolf was still above him, ready to feast apon his flesh. He made no noise other than heavy, labored gasps for air. |

Taryn approached the supine form of Eruantian and prodded his left shoulder with one of her reed-mat-sandaled feet. "I, ah, think something's wrong with...er...Eruan..shin..here," she kind of announced. She wasn't the greatest with names anymore. "Has he been like this the whole time?" she asked to no one in particular, prodding his shoulder again and then propping him upright, keeping him balanced by holding onto his motionless body. { top of the paaage! -dun dun dun DAAA- } |
