Just wondering...
How does voting work in the US or in other countries?

In Holland, we have to vote once in 4 years for the national government, and once in 4 years for the regional government (which is today). You can also vote if there's a referendum, for something like the EU. Or whatever it is about.
Voting is not something you have to do, you can choose to vote or not. You have to be 18 to vote, so today will be my brother's first time. (I'm glad that he's going to vote, because a lot adolecents aren't interested in politics at all. Kind of weird, I mean, it is about your future)
So... how old do you have to vote in the US? (16? You can also drive a car there when you're 16, so...) And how does it work?

Well, here in the US, you can vote when you turn 18, The presidential election is every 4 years, the senate is every six (though 1/3 of the senate is up every two years) and the House is every 2 years. The state and local elections vary state to state. There are elections every year, but some years (usually the odd years) are for the minor things, such as local tax collecter and the whatnot.

It gets complicated. You vote every four years(2000, 2004, etc.) and you have to be 18. The Legislative branch (The part that makes the laws in the US of A) has two parts, the House of Representatives and the Senate. We vote for Senators every 6 years, and the House representatives every 2 years. That's pretty much how it goes down.

I can call my car a BMW, but that doesn't make it so.

A simulpost is when two things are posted at nearly the same time. 3 hours apart is not "at the same time".

Anyhooo.... in Ireland, you get a vote at 18, and we've got what's called a single transverable vote. That's where you can vote for as many candidates as you want on the same ballot.

I think it's the best system, and fewer votes are wasted than in the UK and the US (where you can only vote for one party), and all the parties are given an equal chance.

Though the lack of competition and PR drive does tend to make Irish politics a lot duller than UK and US politics, and it lacks the same charismatic slick. Well..... a lot duller except for the occasional story of ministerial corruption, or of backhanders given and recieved. What fun.

In Canada, we can vote at 18. We vote whenever the government collapses, or every 4 years, whichever comes first. We also don't really vote for the leader, we vote for whoever his representative is in each of our little sections, called "ridings". Although, I think alot of people just end up voting for the person.
