This is a serious question. In almost every movie with nuns in it, some poor girl seems to get her hair cut off short. I'm wonderring why this is? Are nuns secretly army reserves or something? And do they have to keep it short or can they grow it back?

What, you think the term "Lord's Army" is a figure of speech?

The writers of Monty Python didn't pull the term "holy hand grenade" out of thin are, ya know.

Actually, I don't know. I've never really noticed that. I'm-a pay attention next time I see some nuns. If I can ask without offending them, I'll find out.

I read the wikipedia article and didn't get an answer, so I'm going to assume they're doing it as a sacrifice to god or something.

It could just be that it's a movie thing, too.

It might also be simple pragmatics: short hair means you don't have to spend much time taking care of it (believe me, with my thick, naturally curly hair, I know from experience).

I always thought that nuns just needed the essentials, and shouldn't worry about much. You know, like bread to eat and cloths to wear, that sort of thing.

No, they don't have to.

Phew! I am glad to know that, just in case I want to become a nun.

Lol.... strangest R&P question yet.

Dunno what films you mean, but it could be just a dramatic device that the directors are using to make some point. (And probably a negative one, I shouldn't wonder). As in, the cropping of the nun's hair representing the Catholic Church's suppression of individuality or female sexuality, or whatever.

(Mind you, I've heard that in girls' orphanages run by the Sisters of Mercy, the nuns sometimes cut the hair of girls who tried to run away. They did this, they'd say, because they thought these girls were vain, and wouldn't try to venture into public again until their hair grew back.

Of course, the girls were more than likely trying to get back to their families, or to escape the frequent abuse of these institutions. But it seems from that, at least, that the Church equated a girl's hair with her vanity and/or sexuality.)

It could just be the same thing as the monks, look them up, they shave their heads. (look up St. Francis and Kateri, I think that's them)

Shouldn't this be merged with the Catholicism thread?

Uh, "toastpaint" means putting a thread back on topic. This isn't toastpaint.

Oddly enough, I can't seem to find this on Google...

Well, yeah. It kinda was.

He asked an off topic question and then set the thread back on it's merry way.
