it shows, though, that the Palestinians are still more interested in killing Jews than they are in improving their own lives. as long as that's true, there can't be any hope of peace.

Surprised that no one else has weighed in on this... maybe I should explain.

Hamas is a radical Islamic organization that has made it its stated goal to wipe Israel, and all Jews if possible, off the face of the earth. Combine this election of power to them with Iran's latest threats against Israel and the US, and you have some serious trouble. Not to mention Iran's attempts to get nuclear technology (which the Democrats would love to do). Can you an entire nation being nuked out of existence? That would be a horrible tragedy.

I don't think that the Hamas victory alone signals the death of the peace process - in fact, it would do them better to put up a legitimate political front. Whether they care about doing this is a different story. But it's happened before - a terrorist or semi-terrorist group becomes a political party, and their whole ideology begins to change, and they see that it's better to manipulate diplomacy instead of using violence....... eventually. Of course, the situation in Palestine is hugely complex, but it happened in Northern Ireland, and now in the Basque region..... so maybe.....

That is an excellent point, What's Her Face. I'd like to hope that involving Hamas more in the peace process is the first step in moving away from terrorism, too.

But we're talking about guys that are willing to blow themselves up as long as they take some Jews along with them. Similarities to the IRA, no doubt, but I feel that Hamas is a bit more on the crazy side.

We'll see, I guess.

WHF, you may be right, but I doubt it. This is very bad for the middle east. I mean, Hamas says that they could use militants in the Palestinian army. I doubt that Hamas is interested in diplomacy, but is now much more interested in the blowing up of Israel.

I definately take what you're saying, Rogue and Lahi. Though something tells me that the situation could go either way. Take the Fatah Party. Although they're much a party organised by ex-terrorists - and I use "ex" in the loosest possible way - there's been a significant shift in their ideology in the last decade or so. Especially after Arafat's death, they've definately started using diplomacy a lot more than they used to. So maybe this could happen with Hamas too. *shrugs*

well, i talked with my father about this, he says taht this might bring abour Armagedon.

i still say that our country should be in isolation from wars, like we build an atlantic and pacific wall keeping everything out , and closing our boarders to mexico and canada.

really, whod expect terrorists to sneak in through canada?

We tried that, it didn't work. It could be said our isolationist state during the 1920s and 30s was one of the reasons for WW2.

Umm, the U.S. Goverment. After 9/11 the CIA was looking for possible ways that a terrorist could enter and one of the ways at the top of the the list was through the Canadian border.

It would be extemly easy to get in through there too. Where my Grandmother used to live you could easily walk into the US without ever seeing a guard.

During Prohibition, the bootleggers in border states used to go to a rural point along the US/Canadian border and get their booze. Hech, in Detroit, they would go across the Detroit River to Windsor, Ontario and get their shippments.

http://www.slate.com/id/2134928/ This is an interesting article that talks about the hope that Hamas will now be too busy fixing potholes to really worry about bombs. Some interesting ideas, to me they sounded quite plausible.

Aha! Exactly! That's what politics is all about - you can preach the death of Israel all you want, but if the people who elected you see that you're not doing anything to improve their lot on a day-to-day basis, you're not going to survive.

And although Washington relies too much on that "pothole theory" nowadays, the Hamas government will be the ultimate test of that theory. And who knows, the politicisation of Hamas may end up changing their priorities for the better. I'm not holding my breath, but I wouldn't discount it.
