Purgatory is an idea that started some time in the late 6th century, and some attribute it to Pope Gregory I. Basically, the idea is that souls are not pure enough at death to enter into God's presence directly. Therefore, they must be "purged," or punished for a certain length of time to allow God to forgive them. There are certain places in Scripture that indicate that Christians are purged of sin through suffering, but most of those passages seem to indicate that it is through events in our lives, not after death. The idea of purgatory is not really based on Scripture, but rather a faulty notion of how God's grace works. It basically challenges the belief "that God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). We have already been cleansed by the blood of Christ, and as long as we continue to confess our sins, repent of them, and seek forgiveness and cleansing, he continues to grant them. We don't really need a purgatory at death. As I said before, I don't mind the idea of purgatory in this life. Believe me, I've been through a few fires myself, and through them, have been cleansed of many things. But I do not believe we need a purgatory after death. |

Well, "Thou Shalt Not Kill" should include yourself, so that's a sin. . . |

Oh, it is. There's no doubt about that. The doubt is whether or not God's mercy is able to cover it. And that's where I tend to disagree with some more traditional views. On the other hand, for the person contemplating suicide, I would hesitate to offer them that kind of comfort. I would prefer they think more carefully about what God wants them to do here and now, not whether he'll have mercy on them if they follow through. |

" That suicide is painless,"... sorry. I dont think you should kill yourself, because you can go to a theripist if you have that bad of a problem. |

My one friend who is bi-polar has attempted suicide before, but he's got therapy, I think he's okay now. When soemone commits suicide, they are breaking the thou shalt not kill commandment, but I'm not quite sure what would happen, really. I believe that God would forgive you, personally. To everyone who has told their stories here, I think you are all very brave. |
