Surprised that there's no topic for this yet. For those not in the know, Alexander Litvinenko was an ex-KGB man, who was murdered in London after being poisoned with a radioactive material. Litvinenko was an out-spoken critic of Putin, and so far, all eyes of suspicion have been pointed at the Kremlin. And before he died, he said that he believed Kremlin to be behind the poisoning.

Read the Wiki page about his poisoning here. It's better than any Tom Clancy novel, I can tell you that.

Yeah, this whole series of events seems like something that would be in a movie rather than real life. This isn't the first time that Putin has been mentioned in a murder too, right?

Indeed it isn't. Here's just a few people who were offed (or allegedly offed) by the Russian secret service in Putin's and Yeltsin's time:
* Anna Politkovskaya
* Yuri Shchekochikhin
* Artyom Borovik
* Galina Starovoitova
* Malika Umazheva

And check out what Sergei Abeltsev, a member of the Russian government (no less), had to say about Litvinenko's death.....

Quote:
The deserved punishment reached the traitor. I am sure his terrible death will be a warning to all the traitors that in Russia the treason is not to be forgiven. I would recommend to citizen Berezovsky to avoid any food at the commemoration for his accomplice Litvinenko.

Wow.

It's like these clowns aren't even trying to pretend that they're running a supposedly first-world country. (Berezovsky, by the way, is a Russian billionaire, and traces of the same poison was recently found in his London home. Doesn't take a genius.......)

Is Putin trying to restart Communism in Russia? I mean, it's like a sci-fi movie in real life.

Well he is Ex-KGB, so it wouldn't surprise me.

I've been wondering that myself......

On a vaguely related note, I saw a documentary about the dissident murders in Russia the other night, and they were playing a song by some bimbo Russian pop singer - all about how Putin is the absolute ideal of a man, and how the bimbo wished she had a man like Putin.

I was just busting myself laughing. Replace the word "Putin" with "Stalin" and it was like watching something from an old Soviet propaganda reel.

What i think Putin is trying to do is bring back Communism, without the actual Communism part. He wants the power like the former Soviet leaders had. But he knows if he tries to bring back the economic part of Communism back, it'll all blow up in his face.

russian politics can be pretty confusing for me. excuse my ignorance if i get anything wrong, by the way. as far as i know, Russia has been pretty rough ever since the fall of communism. unfortunately they simply moved from one type of totalitarian poverty to a new kind. now there is an incredibly wealthy upper class in russia which is very, very, very small, and then of course a huge population of people who kind of just get by on what they can.

as for Putin's actions: scary guy. the one thing i ever admired about him was his utter dispensation with politeness sometimes. one time there was a Chechen flareup and his response was: "WE WILL GRIND THEM INTO THE [bad word]-HOUSE FLOOR!" but killing people to shut them up...not okay.

I wouldn't be too worried about that happening, myself. The Russian president is only allowed (I think) two terms, like the US Prez. I doubt he could get back that kind of power in just two terms. Essentially, if the end of the second term comes and Putin is still around, then it's time to start worrying.

Ha ha - I didn't hear him say that! But if he did, he certainly kept his promise. And it's not just militants that he's grinding into the ----house floor. A lot of the people who were (allegedly) offed by the Russian secret service were journalists and civil rights activists who dared to accuse the Russian army of grossly abusing Chechens - including rapes and "disappearings".

And as for what happened in Beslan? Forget it - we barely have a clue, because the reporting of the seize was censored to an indeterminable degree.

I could see him trying to conjure up some sort of law repealing the term limits. I wouldn't put it past him.

oh boy WHF, i had forgotten about Beslan. to this day that makes me sad. i saw a national geographic article about it once. yeah, that was rough. i would like to know what exactly happened there.

and personally, i don't think the russian people would let Putin take that sort of power. not that they are a very powerful people, but they are also highly unstable and i just don't think it would fly in the current political climate of the world. at least i hope it wouldn't fly.

putin memories: bush tells Putin to try to be a more democratic country to which Putin responds: what, like the nice democracy you have going there in Iraq?
BURNED.
