I encourage all of you to visit the Invisible Children website. Donate money, buy a bracelet, get the rough cut DVD, whatever you can do.

Hmm... Well I don't have a credit card, so I can't donate, buy a dvd, or buy a bracelet.
Sorry...
But they are still in my thoughts.

We watched part of the documentary in my AP World History class. It's extremely moving. It's really interesting and slightly disturbing to see how much you don't know about the unrest in the world. I definately think anyone who can should watch it.

The documentary is about the conflict in Uganda, which involves children being kidnapped and subsequently trained to serve in the military. These kids are essentially given a gun and made into killing machines, to the point where they are forced to murder civillians, even their friends and families, without any real idea of what they're doing. It's even worse that there is hardly any awareness of these events on America's part.

COLA, please give it more than a 2 second look before you make a comment like that.

True. It's kinda cruddy that NOBODY really pays attention to what's going on there. Of course, if the world WAS paying attention, they couldn't very well call them Invisible Children, could they?

Of course, looking at the site, I see a bunch of people marching and what not. Marching and singing songs and stuff isn't gonna fix the problem. It seems like the people participating in the One Night Commute meant well but didn't accomplish much.
Quote:
Each city's attendance exceeded thier online sign-ups, and our expectations immeasurably. From the group in San Diego whose feet were bleeding from walking 21 miles barefoot to join us, to the 7 girls in Chicago who shaved their heads. From the New Yorkers who could be "laying but not sleeping" on the sidewalk in a single file line, to the downpour on the Prom dresses in Frankin, Tennessee – you were a part of something memorable. Young, old, all races, all religions – united for the Global Night Commute. We feel the force of this movement, and this one night was just the beginning.

The Global Night Commute Book will be available soon, and is guaranteed to give you shivers. Keep checking, your photos and art projects may be included.*

THANK YOU FOR FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE FOR PEOPLE YOU MAY NEVER MEET – KNOWING THEY DESERVE THE SAME FREEDOM AS YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN.

Shaving your head and/or walking 21 miles barefoot means nothing to those kids.
I'm sure they appreciate the thought, but thoughts aren't what they need. Get over there and stop the kidnappings if you want to do something. The international community doesn't care about Africa. Don't believe me? Look at the conflict diamonds being openly sold. Look at Darfur. It seems like, if you want anything done, you have to do it yourself. Cripes, you've made me sound like Bono.

Well they're doing it to raise awareness and get people to donate money. My sister (who showed me the movie) said she wants to work for them. You need to get the DVD if you really want to see what's going on.

EDIT: 711 posts, who wants a Big Gulp?

I have problems with that, too...
A) Who gets the money?
B) What gets done with the money and how's that going to stop this?
C) How much of the money donated will actually help the children?
D) Awareness doesn't equal caring. Darfur showed us that. Unless Uganda's got some oil or gold or diamonds, the international community probably won't care enough to actually intervene. They stopped caring sometime after Bosnia. :(
There's nothing wrong with raising awareness, though.
Ok, that reads a lot more jerkishly than I intend it to, I promise.

On a lighter note, I don't want a Big Gulp, but I do often wonder why you have locks on your doors if you're open 24/7.

I would buy something, but I dont have a credit card. Maybe someone I know will let me use theirs, and pay them back, if I show them the site.
