Ok. Firefox sucks.

I just downloaded and installed it. And I looked and looked, and I couldn't find a "Connect to" Button anywhere. So, I had to load up MSN to connect to the internet.

And, It's way slow. Like Waaaaaay slow. After I connected I told it to go to this forum. And I waited and waited and waited...and I finally got tired and opened up MSN to post this message. Right now it appears to be about half done loading this page.

Sure, that tab thing is awesome, but that doesn't make up for it being so slow.

Y'know what, Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

Yep, you're definitely doing something wrong. First of all: Your web browser is not the Internet. No web browser works unless you're already connected to the Internet. Internet Explorer, being integrated with Windows, makes the dial-up connection dialog pop up. With Firefox you have to do it yourself. Aww.

As far as download times, Firefox should never take appreciably longer than IE--it's the same Internet connection, after all. Go to Tools > Options > General > Connection Settings and make sure it's configured the same way IE is.

I love Firefox, but there are a few things that annoy me about it. First, it will occasionally delete some of the cookies that I prefer to keep, like my forum.hrwiki.org login id.

Second, it doesn't seem to allow custom icons for bookmarks. I prefer to use custom icons so I can better identify my favorite web sites.

But one thing I love about it: it seems faster than IE for some reason.

It is, actually, faster.

I haven't used it, but the Favicon Picker extension seems to do what you want.

I found a tip to make Firefox faster!
1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows: Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

Hmm. I load 8 tabs at once when I start Firefox, and it does seem that it loaded them all faster.

Thanks for the tip, Gecko.

Firefox 2 Beta 1 is out, guys. Have a look at:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ ... ses/2.0b1/
Remember, it's Beta (pre-release) software, so there are still bugs in it and it's not feature-complete yet. (That is, not all the planned features for 2.0 are implemented yet). It's stable enough for everyday use, but don't use it in a mission-critical enterprise.
Check the following link for the official release notes.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho ... 2.0b1.html

I have always been a Firefox fanboy, and I had the pimped out version with all the cool extensions and ifox theme, and I loved it. It was faster than IE, blocked popups better, and I always loved the way every aspect was uber-customizable right down to the codes. But then came v.1.5.0.4. WHAT A MESS! It essentially resets everything but the theme itself when you close firefox and reopen. All of my bookmarks were deleted in the upgrade, and each time I customize buttons, the reset when I restart. Also, popups are beginning to get by in Firefox. My solution, use Opera. I've also tried Chameleon, Ghostzilla(more of a novelty than an actual browser), Mozilla Suite, Netscape, and Seamonkey, and Opera is my favorite because it never has any problems, and works faster than IE. It has all of the things you want like tabbed browsing, blockers, and is good for developers. I would still like to get a copy of Firefox v.1.5.0.3 though. I may go back to firefox when the official 2.0 comes out and beta testing is over.

On this computer, my brother downloaded a virus and screwed up internet explorer (it won't open properly) so a computer guy put firefox on with his lappy. Somehow. So I have no choice but to use it.
But you know what? IE Beta is the only browser I've bothered to download that logs me on to the forum, on my own computer. It's a stupid computer. But I don't like firefox, thought I'd say it. Is that so bad?

I think your IP stack is probably to blame there. What's your ISP?

Ok, so Firefox 2.0 Beta 2 has been out for a while now. Been using it for a bit, and as far as I can tell it's even more stable than Beta 1 was. Spellchecker works better, to.
The random-mis-feeding-to the-clipboard issue now appears to be fixed, as does the cookie-dropping issue.
There's been some major changes to the UI and the shell since Beta 1.. new default skin, new download manager components, new build of the bookmark and RSS manager (you can now right-click and drag items in the bookmarks and the Live Bookmark RSS feeds without opening the Bookmark Manager, but it doesn't work if you scroll your bookmark list up whil you're draging an item in the bookmark. That's probably gonna be fiex in Beta 3), new RSS subsciber allows you to use the built-in Live Bookmarks function or to choose your own 3rd party RSS reader instead, new "add-dictionaries" function that takes you to an official extension page where you can get non-default dictionaries for Firefox.. it's now hooked up (aparantly working), and a bunch of bugfixes and tweeks are in there as well.

As much as I love Firefox, I'm a little leery of Beta versions. It's the same reason I'm usually one of the last people I know to update to the newest Microsoft operating system.
I do like the spellchecker (as it is right now, whenever I'm posting and I don't know how to spell something, I Control-T and search for the word, spelling it as best I can. Usually I'm right, but when I'm not, I find the correct spelling pretty quickly).

Just a question,
How can people not prefer Firefox.. It's so much faster, safer, has a tabs function etc.

Unless there's a serious problem with your Firefox, what can people possibly dislike?

Well, some people are just afraid of change. They figure that "if IE is working for me now, and it isn't causing any major problems, why should I switch?"

Before I go on-topic, I'd just like to say that I've been switching browsers a lot lately. First I went back to IE (purely for nostalgic reasons). Then Firefox again briefly. Then I found Flock and used that for a couple days. And now...

...FF2 Beta 2.

Don't know too much has changes, but some things have been graphically improved (check the navigation and search areas). Dunno what exactly to expect (although I probably should've read the release notes) but so far, all looks well for Firefox. :D

What's that MP3 player bar down at the bottom there? Is that a standard part of Firefox 2?

I was thinking the same thing.
Tell me those aren't standard on FF2 B2, AND if they are, tell me I can turn them off. I hate toolbars.

I <3 FireFox. If I hadn't downloaded FireFox, I would not be on the forum right now. In mid-april, IE was giving me issues with the forum, and for awhile I couldn't log on. I was a wreck. Then, I decided, hey, if all these other techies on the wiki are using FireFox, maybe that would allow me to sign on. *gasp* It did! So I started using FireFox religously. But, now I have parental controls on my compy so I can't use any other browser except the crappy AOL one. Yarr. I still love FireFox and it's pop-up blocker, it's customizability...ahh...

No, it's some sort of extension he added in.

That's what's so great about Firefox. There's hundreds of officially supported extensions written by the open-source community. My fave's are Adblock Plus and Filterset G

I love Firefox. Not only is it awesome by itself, but the many extensions and the bazillions of scripts for a certain extension makes it infinitely customizable and WAY more useful than any other browser ever.

Also, it's got the coolest logo.

I've been mostly using IE7. I use Firefox occasionally. It recently hasn't been able to connect to the server or whatever, so I can't do anything with it. I'll reinstall it I guess.

Firefox used to be the thing that made people able to say, "I dont follow the man I play by my own Internet rules! Firefox is faster, cooler looking, and it is beter! IM not afraid to change!" But then Linux came, a free Operating sever with Internet in a cool package, and can look like anything. I am sorry that firefox users cant say the man cant bring them down.
