What are some of your favorites?

Mine:
They revamped the airport completely/Now it looks just like a night club/Everyone's excited and confused - Man, It's So Loud in Here

A man once came up to me and said/I'd like to change your mind/By hitting it with a rock he said/Though I am not unkind - Whistling in the Dark

There's more, but I can't think of them. Right now.

I could probably sit here all day listening to TMBG and saying "Oh, yeah, this line is great," but then I'd never get any work done. The first line that popped into my head, though, is this bit from "It's Not My Birthday":

They Might Be Giants wrote:
Well, the rain falls down without my help, I'm afraid
And my lawn gets wet though I've withheld my consent
When this gray world crumbles like a cake
I'll be hangin' from the hope
That I'll never see that recipe again

It's actually a direct reference to Richard Harris' infamous "MacArthur Park," which goes:

Richard Harris wrote:
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

But I like the TMBG version better. In fact, that entire song is full of great turns of phrase.

I have quite a few:

"The yellow Roosevelt Avenue leaf overturned"--from "Cowtown". If you don't get it, try saying it out loud.

"I love the world, and if I have to sue for custody, then I will sue for custody"--from "Stand On Your Own Head". Just plain clever.

"Speak softly, drive a Sherman tank/Laugh hard, it's a long way to the bank"--from "Rhythm Section Want Ad", which is just chock-full of great lyrics.

"Lad looks at other gals/Gal thinks Jim Beam is handsomer than Lad/He isn't bad"--from "They'll Need A Crane". (For those who don't know, Jim Beam is a type of liquor...)

"When you're following an angel, does it mean you have to throw your body off a building?/Somewhere they're meeting on a pinhead, calling you an angel, calling you the nicest things"--from "She's An Angel". I just like this one.

"So the stream of people gets wider/Then it becomes a river/River becomes an ocean/Carrying ships that bear women and men"--from "Women And Men". Just try wrapping your mind around it.

Heh. This is also one of my favorites.

"Out from the kitchen,
To the bedroom,
To the hallway,
Your friend apologizes
He could see it my way.
He let the contents of the bottle
Do the thinkin',
He'd shake the Devil's hand
And say, 'You're only kidding!'"
-From "Your Racist Friend"

I have another line that I really like, too, from an older song of theirs, but I don't think it's entirely appropriate for this forum. No bad words, but it's quite suggestive... risque, I guess you'd say.

And I really like this bit from what may be my favorite TMBG song of all time:

"I want another first kiss like this."

Everyone's already posted the Jim Beam quote, so I'll just say that in terms of cleverness, that's definitely up there among the greatest of all song lines. There may be one better, but I can't honestly think of it right now.

The chorus to "She's An Angel".

"When you're followin' an angel/Does it mean you have to throw your body off a building?/Somewhere they're meeting on a pinhead/Calling you an angel, calling you the nicest things/I heard they had a space program/When they sing you can't hear, there's no air/Sometimes I think I kind of like that and/Other times I think I'm already there..."

"Dinner Bell has some fantastic lyrics:

They Might Be Giants wrote:
I don't want a pizza, I don't want a piece of
Peanut brittle, I don't want a pear
I don't want a bagel, I don't want a bean I
Wouldn't like a bag of beef or a beer or a
Cup of chowder, corn, cake, or creamed cauliflower cause I'm
Waiting for the dinner bell to do the bell thing
Dinner bell, dinner bell, ring

...

I don't know whether I'd rather be having a bottle of vinegar
I don't know whether I'd rather be having an egg
I don't know whether I'd rather be having an order of bacon
Or whether I'd rather be having a basket of garlic bread
I don't know whether I'd rather be having some pie or
Saving my appetite 'cause I'm
Waiting for the dinner bell to do the bell thing
Dinner bell, dinner bell, ring

Edit: "The End of the Tour" also has some surreal lyrics, like these sung from the point of view of a car:

They Might Be Giants wrote:
Never to part since the day we met
Out on Interstate 91
I was bent metal you were a flaming wreck
When we kissed at the overpass
I was sailing along with the people
Driving themselves to distraction inside me
Then came a knock on the door which was odd
And the picture abruptly changed

What a lot of you people have been saying, and also:

Quote:
Full bottle in front of me
Time to roll up my sleeves
And get to work
And after many glasses of work
I get paid in the brain

It's from "Your Own Worst Enemy". I'll probably think of more in, like, two seconds. But of course, everything of They-r's is written so extremely well I've set it as the standard I will never reach. Now to watch Arrested Development.

And sadly, the cross-eyed bear's been put to sleep behind the stairs
And his shoes are laced with irony

Hide Away Folk Family --They are awesome with twisting stuff around. Like the Sherman tank stuff from Rhythm Section Want Ad.
-----------
Fell in the door
And you fell on the floor
With your hand on the knob
Looking up and abruptly
Forget what you're thinking
Fire alarms go off in your head you live

In the nightgown of the sullen moon
How the windows lean into the room
In the nightgown of the sullen moon

Nightgown of the Sullen Moon --It's just cool.
-----------
I wasn't always so fortunate
But I knew what I had to do to be well-to-do
And it had to do with the things
I had to do

Now That I Have Everything--It sounds awesome. They...'re awesome.
-----------
Every night they throw aside their blankets
Swing their feet down
Stand up and move out to the street
Like they're under a spell
And together they roam across the country
And they're walking in their sleep

Sleepwalkers-- I really love this whole song. It's just beautiful sounding. It flows really well, and it just sounds nice.
----------
Here's hoping you don't (hoping you don't)
Become a robot (clang clang)
Clang clang whoops -- too late!
Here's hoping you don't (hoping you don't)
Become a robot (clang clang)
Clang clang whoops -- too late!
Let's stick together 'cause we're number eight
Let's stick to numbers 'cause we're great

Become a Robot -- Because it's funny. Really funny.

Ah, another good one, from "Snowball in Hell":

From Subliminal. In-an-un-no. Fun to say.

They wrote:
Thank you for the card with the cartoon nurse
But you see there's nothing wrong with me
You think, "That's what you think,
That's what they all say,"
Before I blow you away
Destination Moon It's funny to me. And cool. And awesome.

Here's another one that came to mind. What's the second song on the second Dial-A-Song disc? I can NOT think of the title, but the intro is so twistingly writen that it took me forever to realize what it meant.

Make a hole with a gun perpendicular
To the name of this town in a desktop globe
Exit wound in a foreign nation
Showing the home of the one this was writen for

That's Ana Ng, and it's the second track on the first disc of DAS. Superb love song.
