I'm doing a project for my school, and I need to know what foreign teenagers know about Holland/The Netherlands/Nederland. Is there a better place to ask than here?
I'd like to know what you know about my little country.
Do you thinks of Holland as this?
Image
How do you think this country looks? It is said that Americans think that all Dutch act like uncle Scrooge, eat a lot of cheese and all walk on clogs. Is that correct, or rubbish?
You might also like to share your opinion things like the fact that soft drugs are legal in Holland, the Euro, or Dutch politics.
Thanks a lot for helping me!

Huh? Dutchland (non-existant place) is just like normal. No fjords 'n' stuff right? And dutch people have cool hair (french plaits?) and know, like, 10 languages.

3 of my 4 grandparents are from the Netherlands. I hope to visit there someday. My parents did a couple years ago, so I've seen lots of pictures of old buildings and some towns. And I know a guy who's lived there all his life when he visited once... I don't really know anything about the country though (I hear it rains). btw when I think of Holland I think of this

All I know about Holland is what I've heard through the stereotypes, unfortunatly.

Clogs are worn mostly by gardeners, fishermen and farmers, the others mostly wear this perfectly normal stuff. Also lotsa people have bikes. And if I remember correctly, Edam and Gouda cheeses (plural of cheese?) were first made in Holland...

That's all I could come up with right now, excluding the usual stuff like windmills and cows.

What are those stereotypes? The thing that is true, is that we have bicycles. A lot of bicycles. Ask ramrod ;)

I've never seen a field with tulips in my whole life. There's one region in Holland with tulips, and that's where all the tourists go.

I have a cousin who lives in Holland and there is a large tulip field across the street from her house.

All I basically know are the stereotypes, plus the fact that The Hague is there. That's gotta be the best name for a city ever. The Hague.

That'd be cool if all cities were like that. "Welcome to The Philadelphia."

Also, dikes.

Oh Goodness yes. There were bikes everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. Trees, rivers, whatever you can think of. That one pic I saw must have had close to a thousand bikes in it. I'm surprised that you don't get confused on which one is which.

I think of very "liberal" sexuality laws, and drugs galore.

Ok, when I think of the Dutch, I immediatly picture people in, like, that Bavaria type stuff, you know? Like the Lederhosen and the Blond girls with the pig tails and funny dresses? I realize this is uber prejudice, but I'm trying to give an honest answer.

That is the first hybrid stereotype that I have seen. You just fused Holland and Germany together.

I confess, I do think of tulips and windmills. And drugs, prostitution, and everything else Amsterdam's famous for. And chocolate. And you, actually.

A couple years ago, my best friend actually visited Amsterdam for 4 months as an exchange student, and judging by the lyrics of our nearly 15-minute "Amsterdam" epic, he brought up bikes being plentiful (of course), as well there being a lot of canals, tall people, and junkies selling drugs like ecstasy, as well as very few animals. And very, very strange sexual studies professors. ;)

Well, the only time I've been in Holand is when I flew into the Amsterdam airport to get a connecting flight. Boy, that was a kool airport. It's like a mall in there! Whenever I think of Holand I think of all the stores and such in that airport.
