Well, do ya? Something we all could enjoy?

I can't think of any offhand. But I will, when I have more time.

uhh... Commander Keen?

(I always hated the name, though. Sounds way too much like "Commander King" when you say it.)

How about GIMP. It's a freeware paint program like Photoshop, but Cheap as Free.

I also know a web site where you can get lots of VSTi plugins for music composition software. http://www.kvr-vst.com

Also, if you want maximum performance from your Windows XP machine, use TuneXP. You run it, make your selections, then reboot. It will also optimize Windows boot-up and shut-down.

(Edit: Links to web sites added).

Worms War 3 is a fun game where ants and worms are at war. There's 4 in the FREEWARE series. It's fun but hard! I died with the difficulty at level 1, like 20 times! But it's fun... It's a compressed file, so use Winzip or something...

I am starting an electronic music, hard disk recording, and music theory program at the high school where I am teaching next year, and I have very little budget to work with.

Thank you Didymus for the cool link. That music comp stuff looks cool.

I need cheap-as-free music software...? Thank you for your input.

I am also starting a chess club, which I think would be cool on the computers. Any chess shareware?

Thanks, I appreciate you folks.

I use Jeskola Buzz for professional music stuff. It's pretty buggy and quirky and has a steep learning curve, but if you master it, it's very rewarding.

For something simpler, I'd recommend ModPlug Tracker.

Welcome, LJV.

You'll need a host program, like Fruity Loops, and I don't know of any Freeware hosts. The popular search engine Google (Eh Tom) might help you there.

My favorite plugins include:

Delay Lama(an animated singing monk--SWEET!)

Rogue (Interesting distortion effects)

Free Alpha (great for pads and string sounds)

Texture (very high-tech metalic sounding)

Galactix

Lallapalooza (P H A T)

Egokiller, Fearkilller, and Dreamkiller (hardcore).

More links are available on that KVR web site.

Sorry, kef. I didn't see your post. We must have been writing at about the same time or something.

On another thread, I mentioned "rippin" CD's to Wave files or MP3's (IJ called it Digital Audio Extraction--same thing). Here's an easy to use program I've been using: CDex.

I usually rip trax to Wave so I can edit them--level off the volume, EQ, add FX, or even do remixes.

Remember: only rip CD's if you own them and do not plan to distribute the music. It is illegal to bootleg music. (You hear that, RIAA? I'm not promoting piracy).

OBJECTDOCK!

It's a pretty handy program that can emulate the Mac Os dock.
