Hmm. I purchased a Dell Axim x50 over two weeks ago. I also got overnight shipping on it.

However, it still hasn't gotten to me, and according to them, it won't be ready to come to me until the 19th.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had problems with Dell in the past.

I haven't gotten one, but two of my friends who got laptops from Dell and both of them crapped out. The hard drive went out on both. Both after 5 months after they got them.

They usually ship items before the date they say it will be ready. Custimization. I have an Axim X3i and I love the wireless Internet access.

Oy. The n00bs in my town all seem to have Dells. No idea why. I figure that if I undercut their on-site service I can make a killing repairing people's computers.

I, on the other ahnd, buy from quality brands (HP, Gateway) or build my own. The computer I would like to build in the near future can be had for $800 custom-built or about $1450 from a company like HP. Monitor included. And it's on the low end as Alienwares go. ;)

Theres no such thing as a quality brand. Gateway and HP are just as crappy as Dell. The only way to have a extremely high quality computer is to make it yourself. I have a gaming rig, plus this one Dell that my parents got me for school work/art work.

Edit: Your sig is fading super fast.. I don't know if thats intentional, but its gonna give me a seisure.

True, true, no one brand is the best. It's just that Gateway seems to have a higher degree of quality.

And about my sig, I'll make it slower.

Correction. Alienware. Alienware are some of the sickest computers you could buy, yeah they cost an arm and a leg, but they are worth it.

That, and only the geekiest know how to use them.

But it isn't terribly difficult to wipe the drive and install Gentoo, right? ;)

Poor poor dell-users, 24-hour service. Yeah right, try a computer that don't need no customer service. BUY A MAC AND YOU'LL BE 10 YEARS AHEAD OF WINDOWS. Plus, customer service is SO 20th century.

Lieeess. When you buy an Alienware, your paying for the case. You could easily build a computer with the same specs for half the price. Don't fall for the fact that they say they're ment for gaming. The only thing that makes them ment for gaming is the parts that they put in them, and you can get them anywhere. Just build your own and buy a cool case and save yourself so dough.

Hmmm....build me own computer Eh?.....I'll save hundreds!....Yeah right...What I can suggest is not to get Dell Laptops. Dell has the best Customer Service for a reason, because their products are crap.

A couple things here.

1) I am not a big fan of prebuilt computers. Mainly because it used to be that you couldn't build anything comparable for less. That's not entirely true anymore. I have a dell server (sc420) with a 2.4 celery (it was $100 bucks less then a p4) 512 ram and 160gb Sata drive for less then $250. I would love to see someone pull that off cheaper (at pricees 3 months ago). To top it off, it has been up and running (fedora core 3) for the better part of a month with no problems (knocking on serious wood here)

However, my gaming box is built entirely by me. I got a mobo and cpu cheap, found a cheap video card. In fact, the most expensive thing in it is the memory.

I guess it's kinda hard to find non-prebuilt laptops :) I got mine from a company called mwave. I haven't had any problems they weren't able to fix right away. I think it's all about luck.

2) Alienware computers (and more on prebuilts). Overpriced computers... the only thing you are paying for anymore is the name. They are the top of the line, or at least very near to it. But there is no way that they should cost that much.

The one thing that you do tend to get out of computers like these is reliability. When someone else puts together a computer and thouroughly tests it (like alienware or dell) you are almost guaranteed that all of its components will play nicely with each other. You don't have that same guarantee with a homebuilt.

3) Macintosh... quite possilby the most debately computers on the market. Sure the hardware/software costs more then you would for an intel box... sure the hardware/software is limited in quantity/quality... but they sure have some good, I mean great points about them.

When it comes to graphical/video design/manipulation nothing beats an experienced user on his/her macintosh. There just exists better software.

But you don't buy a macintosh to be a gaming pc... duh :)

Enough of my ramblings... personally I kinda like linux. (doom3 runs on it :) )

ps if you think installing gentoo is easy, your nuts. :) I spent a weekend trying to get it to compile. I learned tons about how my computer works (as well as *nix), but I still didn't have an operating system on my computer by monday. :p

Man. I would NEVER and I repeat NEVER buy a full PC from Dell. Only PDAs, cause they rock the house. And they're cheaper than iPaqs.

But for PCs, I priced all the stuff that's gonna be in my new computer that I'm building, and it's ALL top of the line and maxed out. And UNDER $1,800, including the monitor.

You can always find some geek to help walk you through your PC building process. I always suggest that people build thiers.

Just from my experience in helping maintain a fairly big computer domain, 250 Windows Desktops, 250 Linux Desktops, a couple macs, at least 30 different severs (running various os's), Dell has proven fairly reliable. A large number of our desktops (both os's) are manufactured by Dell.

Being a low level consultant, I hear about it when computers break. If it is something hardware related (which it usually isn't) we are able to just send the part/computer back to Dell and they take care of it real quick. It may have something to do with the fact that we also have bought several of our multi-thousand $$$ servers from them.

I tried Gentoo once...it was on my server though, I was trying to find something faster than Slackware...Gentoo is probably my only option for a faster-than-slackware server...however, apparently thttpd is in portage! I don't have to wait 2 hours for Apache to compile! (This was on a P166 btw)
