At my school District, the teachers are thinking of going on strike. They have not told us when, but the news will probably tell us tonight. The days they're on strike, they're going to make up in the summer time! This really sucks...

Do you think they're doing the right thing?

no. Their job is to teach children during the school year. If they wanna go on strike they should do it over summer vacation instead of prolonging the year of their work. AND your work.

Crap no! They're not doing the right thing! They shouldn't have to make kids go to school in the summer! It's not the kids' fault! When I think of a teachers' strike, I think that the students should resolve it like they did in Hey Arnold, but that's a little unrealistic.

Before you all start bashing the teachers, think of what they are going through...

While I really wouldn't want to be going to school during the summer, I think that teachers should be given fair wages (and raises as appropriate). You need to realize that your teachers aren't going on strike to hurt you, but to make sure that they are treated right.

Everyone is out to make a buck, they just need to make sure that they are getting what they deserve. To be honest, if it would improve their working conditions, I think more teachers should strike.

(along the same lines, I don't have too much of a problem if the school district decided to just fill the striking teachers postitions... after all everyone is out to make a buck or two)

That happened back when I was in 5th grade, I was off for two weeks and it was great.

I had to make it up also which wasn't great. I think that any time taken while the teachers were on strike should be ignored it's their own problem not that of the students.

Nope. There's no way you can do that. You have to go to school if the school district decides that it will be held. Ever heard of a truant officer?

Well, the teachers in the schools within this school board have gone for the Work to Rule sanction... not a full strike, but they are not going to be performing certain duties, the most noticeable of which is doing report cards. Only 20% of them were finished, and the school board feels it unfair to release only those 20% and nothing else, but seeing as the teachers are striking, the others can't be finished. This means no one gets any until this matter is cleared up and the teachers get the prep time they want.

While it may suck that you might have to go to school in the summer, just think of all the hardships the teachers must go through. They have to deal with you brats first off (joking), some materials are being paid out of their OWN pockets. There are many budget cuts, meaning less materials, and possible less pay. That, and much of the funding goes unfairly to athletics. The kids are there to learn about history and math, not how to run a 143 counter bootleg. Give the teachers a break.

A teacher's strike, eh Steve? Yeah we had one of those, sometime in the Fall. Basically, all that happened was that we had subs in all of our classes and a craplourde of busy work.

My 4th grade teacher got fired right in class, so he tried to get the other teachers to revolt.
It was pretty funny, and yes I do believe it is right for them to go on strike because (1) they do a crapload of mor work than you guys do (2)
I don't care if its in the summer, live up for the moment, and screw the future!

What in craps name did he have to do to get fired right in the middle of class?

One of my teachers in 7th grade complained about the school system every day during class... he quit the next year. But then again, I'm a Kentuckian... our schools stink.

They had a small strike in my town a week or two ago, only for a day (and why am I out of high school already???)

But I really don't think that teachers should strike. The kids have to be taught. I'm assuming that's why they wanted to get into teaching in the first place: for their love of children and to provide the future's adults with the best education they can.

If they wanted to get into a job with an easy workload and high pay, they should have chosen a different career path.

So if the school district suddenly decided that the teachers should be paid in bananas, should that still apply?

Everyone has a right to fair wages. How would you expect the teachers to get any attention from the big-wigs that dish out the money? Letters and emails are easy enough to dismiss. Even phone calls can be shrugged aside.

But a strike gets people talking. When the parents are complaining that a strike is going to cut into a family vacation they have planned in the beginning of the summer. Or that suddenly they have their kids home with no one to babysit. People do what they need to do when it comes to being treated fairly.

I think Stu's got it right. Keep in mind, guys, that your opinions might change when you're not in school anymore, and those extra weeks of summer school won't affect you directly.

My sister is a high school teacher and has been for 7 years. There hasn't been a strike (in the Catholic board) since she started teaching, but I know she isn't completely satisfied with her pay. As someone mentioned above (sorry!), teachers do have to pay for many of their materials out-of-pocket, and most only get one spare period a day, meaning that they have to take home loads of student work to mark, and do it on their own time.

Also, we can't forget about the instances in which teachers are forced to teach subjects they aren't officially qualified to teach. My sister is an English major with a minor in History, yet over the years her principals have made her teach law, family studies, sociology, current events... It may not seem like a big deal, but she hadn't even taken any law courses in high school, and had to learn everything as she went.

It may seem like a great profession, what with the holidays and all, but teachers are only paid a small percentage of their salary over July and August, and that's when some of the hardest work comes in - trying to learn a new subject because the principal says you have to teach it in two months.

I think if teachers feel they are being treated unfairly, they should strike. And big deal if the kids have to go to school until the last week of June: those kids will one day be fighting for fair representation as well.

Ok then, how about this. You work all those hours that the teachers work. You work with annoyig brats, angry parents cause Johny got an B-, and other teachers that don't know what they're doing. And you shell out the money for materials, using your own money. You deal with budget cuts, meaning you have less to teach with and more students to teach. You will see, it's not all too easy. That, and all the schooling you have to go through to become a teacher gets expensive. Teachers, fire fighters, hospital workers and police officers should be the most respected professions in our culture, not pro-athlete.

Hmmm. I wouldn't brag about that if I were you. Skipping school usually equals repeating grades.

Yeah, and after you spend your three days skipping class and probably missing some crucial final exam or something, you get to spend a fun-filled month or so at SUMMER SCHOOL! AWESOME!!!!
