Post subject:  Read Hunter S. Thompson

I could write a very long rant about Hunter S. Thompson, but I will mostly refrain from that. It occurred to me that there are probably a lot of people here who are just now hearing about him due to his committing suicide this past Sunday. I just want to say that if you have never read any of Thompson's many books or thousands of articles that you should take the time to search for them in your city or school library.

Believe me, if all you have experienced of Thompson's work is the movie of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, you have not even come close to what Thompson was all about. Inbetween all of the drugs, booze, guns, and hallucinations were some of the most insightful and even sensitive things you will ever read. Even though his political and social references in his more famous works may leave you a bit confused because they happened so relatively long ago, the overall points he makes are eternal (he did get a book out about George W. Bush if you feel more comfortable with more contemporary topics).

Whether you knew about him or not, the world will be a sadder and darker place without Hunter S. Thompson. It's a shame that he was in so much pain that he felt he could no longer live his life to the very edge as he always had and decided it was time to go on his own. I can only hope that people will continue to discover his writings and find out what was really behind what came to be known as "gonzo journalism."

I had heard of him, but I hadn't really read any of his stuff until he started writing for espn.com. I really liked all of that stuff though.
