As a supporter of all Aussie bands, I'm interested to know what sort of coverage they're getting outside of this country.

So what Australian bands have you guys heard of over on the other side of the world? And that you think are good?

Um, Silverchair. They rocked, back in the day. Can't think of any other Aussie bands right now...

I don't suppose you know of many Canadian bands eh?

Aussie bands that aren't AC/DC? Can't think of any off the top of my head, sorry.

As for Canadian bands (or singers that are Canadian), I know of quite a few, including Godspeed You Black Emperor, Neil Young, Moxy Fruvous, stupid old Alanis (don't like her much), The Arcade Fire, Rush, Propagandhi, Nomeansno, and John Oswald (which is getting pretty obscure right there).

When I think of Aussie Bands, I think Silverchair, AC/DC... Thinking of solo acts, Keith Urban comes to mind (an australian singing country?). One of my old geography profs said it's not as uncommon as I'd think..

Then you must know the Weakerthans too, right?

Aside from AC/DC and Silverchair, I don't know any Australian bands. But I did go see Silverchair in Toronto in, like, 1997. They were good.

Canadians... Alanis, Avril (ugh!), Sum 41, Celine Dion. That's about it. Oh, and k.d lang.

I thought ACDC and silverchair would be popular answers. I was wondering who was actually getting exposure in the US.
Anyone heard of:

The Vines
The Living End
Grinspoon
Spiderbait
Jet
Something for Kate
Pete Murray

They're all up-and-comers, so you might be hearing of them soon, if not already.

The usual mob. AC/DC, Silverchair, Nick Cave and his various associated bands, Men At Work... I've probably heard of more, but they've slipped my memory

Godspeed You Black Emperor, Rush, Nihilist Spasm Band. I think Sloche were Canadian

Both of these have been covered extensively here in the UK. Can't stand either of them though, although "Get Free" or whatever that Vines single was was pretty sweet

What about Simple Plan? They're Canadian, and I saw them live when they were a hardcore band called Reset, if you can believe that.

And what about... Alexisonfire, Rush, Holly Cole, Great Big Sea, Barenaked Ladies, Leonard Cohen, Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Stompin' Tom, The Tea Party (Jim Morrison reincarnated!), Moist, Hawksley Workman, Our Lady Peace, Tom Cochrane, Diana Krall (married to Elvis Costello!), The Tragically Hip, Finger Eleven, Sloan, Treble Charger, Neil Young, Sarah MacLachlan, Sarah Harmer, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Glenn Gould, The Guess Who, Kim Mitchell (I am a wild party!), Bif Naked (if you don't know her, you should get to know her), Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet (Kids in the Hall theme song guys), Steppenwolf, and the Weakerthans?

Okay, that went on a little longer than I expected. And while not everyone in my list is good, they're all Canadian and I bet you'll be surprised at some of the names on there! :)

Some I had forgotten, like Bryan Adams. I really do not like Nelly Furtado!

I'll have to say AC/DC. i'm a metalhead. The Vines are good too. What was the name of the band that made the song "I come from a land down under"

Well yeah, in at least a couple instances, you listed artists that I'd be rather ashamed of being associated with (read: Bryan Adams, BTO), so I guess I could be forgiven for not remembering as many as I could. I should've at least listed Shadowy Men, though. I mean geez.

Same with PizzaTrophy's Aussie list. I'd forgotten that Australia was responsible for producing Jet, and for that I feel sorry for you guys. However, as also mentioned, you did produce Nick Cave, which certainly isn't bad.

I agree. Jet are extremely over rated, not to mention, terribly ugly!

Hey, I like Jet! They remind me of The Beatles.
Also, has anyone heard of Thirsty Merc? They're from Australia.

Oh, INXS, how old-school! I like them, with the original Michael Hutchence (RIP).

Missy HIggins will hit it big I think. TCOC, you from Aus?

Thirsty Merc's Australian? Cool.

Yeha, they showed this documentary a while ago on Aussie bands
They're mostly from WA or Vic
Kylie Monogue is from Victoria, but I seriously don't like her.

Never knew they were from Canada. Personally, I think Avril is HOT but that's just me. Did anyone else hear she's getting married to the front man of Sum 41?

Douglas Adams said that.

Actually, he said:
"Anything that happens, happens.
"Anything that in happening causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen.
"Anything that in happening causes itself to happen again, happens again.
"It doesn't necessarily happen in that order, though."
