Post subject:  SATs, anyone?
Yeah, so I'm taking them tomorrow. Anyone have any helpful hints? I can score a perfect on the verbal... that's not a problem. Anything anyone can tell me to help me keep my cool on the math part? How did you guys do? Anything you could go back and do differently? Should I be more worried than I am? Which, I must say, is not very much at all.

Anyway, enough of that.

I don't remember my SAT's. It's been like 20 years or more since I took them. The last time I think I got an 800 on the math and like 600 on the verbal. I took the GRE a few years ago, and scored 720 on the analytical, 740 on the quantitative, and 550 on the verbal. It's funny, though. The sem requires us to take the GRE, but they don't care squat about your scores.

Simple.

Separate all pages.

I never skip questions......yet it said i skipped 6, drastically lowering my score. Even with the 6 skipped questions factored in I had 55% right, so if they'd been answered it would certainly have been higher. Stupid stuck pages...... did 770 math, 550 verbal......the 6 missed was on the verbal, on reading comprehension of all things, my worst area second to listening comprehension(not even tested on SAT thouhg)

Oh and don't fall asleep. Although that didn't happen on SAT but rather ACT

The thing about the SATs is honestly not to worry too much. That's about all I can say there.

I can't remember what I got in the individual categories, only that my overall was somewhere around a 1330. (I'm sure I did way better in the verbal than the math anyway since math is something I don't really like a whole lot.)

I take em in January, is kinda odd cause im still in 7th. There is a large group of students (including myself) That are takin em in Jan, were takin all these prep classes, and if we get like 700 we get summer courses at a colleage!

The SATs are taken in High School, not Middle School. You must be taking the PSATs (a practice test).

Here's a little hint for all tests (esp the SATs)
Don't stress, it only makes it worse. Don't over analyze things, if it sems too easy, than that means that you're prob smart. And make sure that you get enough but not tooo much sleep the night before. Oh, and food...food is good too.

No, it is very much the SAT. There is a special colleage program for the brightest of the bright in my town offering this, it is very much real. It is not like when you take it in 11th and it effects whether colleages will take you or not, but it looks good on your colleage application.

That's what the PSAT is. It's like going in an I.B. program--it's a big "Woohoo" on your academic record. (it's 'college', not 'colleage')

Unless, you mean that this is a private organization, in which case it's not affiliated with the SAT program (though it may say it is, there is no SAT testing in the seventh grade unless it is the SAT Preparatory test)

Not true. I took the SAT in 7th grade. And yes, it was a real, honest-to-goodness SAT, the same one all the high school kids were taking.

Whoa! That's awesome. Was it because you were in an advanced course, or was it just that the system allowed the test to be taken at any time? I was just basing my statement on the SAT's website, which says it's taken in High School, and that you can't be under 13 to register.

[edit]-I just saw a part saying that these rules don't necessarily apply to a Talent Search program, so that may be the case.

Or, you can take a practice test from a book. In 8th grade I got something like a 950, which, admittedly, was actually sort of embarrassing. Used to be one of those genius-type people, but that really doesn't get you any friends.....so I took 50 IQ and torched it. :eek: Being around lots of..........immigrants screws your verbal horribly.

You know you can't score less than a 400 right? ;)

I was in advanced placement classes in middle school. And a group of us took the SAT to participate in some program Duke University was doing. I was selected to go to Duke for a three-week course in Algebra and Geometry. That was between 7th and 8th grade.

Well, thanks for all the advice, everyone. Most of it was latent, but that's okay. The SATs weren't bad at all-- even the math section wasn't as evil as I thought it would be. Now I just gotta wait for my scores.

Yeah, the orginization that lets us young folks take the SAT's (at least the one I use) is John Hopkins University. I took it last year in 7th (670 in both sections, so 1340!), so my mom said I don't have to take it this year if I don't want to. I said I'd do it for fun.
I also took the ACT, because one of the high schools I'm applying to wanted my ACT scores. I bombed everything but the math. Yeah.

Truthfully, the best way to do good on the math is to just chill! A lot of people get all scared because it's math. Math isn't too hard. Since it is the SAT (same advice applies for the GRE), you're not going to be solving partial differential equations. Most likely, you're getting some easier algebra and geometry. Since the test is coming up so soon, I really can't help you much, but for those of you taking it in a month or two, brush up on your geometry/trig.

Perhaps the best thing you can do is to eliminate the answers you know are wrong, and don't spend too long working on any particular question, as they're all worth the same number of points (something I wish I would have remembered on the GRE). If you work too long on one problem you'll run out of time. I speak from experience on this one.

SAT scores: Didn't take it.
ACT: 34
GRE: V:710 Q:770 A:5.0

Yeah, I was surprised. No algebra 2, no trig, no calculus (at least last year).

I was relieved, but a bit dissapointed. It would have been fun to try and figure some of that stuff out. Although my score probably would have dropped like a brick if those had been on it.

Oh, I remember the word "mollify" popping up several times, so make sure you know that definition.

I have no idea how to improve SAT or ACT scores, but doing them a couple of times helps. Also, I always went to a little diner called Sills in Layton to have a scone, a half order of biscuits and gravy, and a hot chocolate with the whipped cream on top before the tests. A nice routine before big tests. Well, hope you did well. I ended up taking the SAT once, the ACT twice, and a couple of SAT II's before finishing that stuff up.

1400! Hoorah.

660 on the math,
740 on the verbal.

That... does add up to 1400, doesn't it?

Man you guys here on the forum are crazy. Nice job on that 1400. 1400, 1340, 1330, ACT of 34....i used to be one of those high up guys who was doing stuff two grades ahead in school(ended up deliborately torching 50 off my IQ) and I get a 1320 and a 31(twice) stupid inadvertently skipped problems... Man this is one conventionally intelligent forum! All y'all's scores are in the 98-99th percentiles??!?

Hey ramrod you just said the S-word. Use one of these four instead: intelligent(able to gain information), knowledgeable(posessing information), wise(able to use information), clever(able to create information). Well ok you can say "smart" but please not in my face as it's a sign of stupidity ok wiseguy? :p
