Post subject:  6th grade

I took the SAT test in sixth grade (3 yrs ago). I don't remember what my scores were, but they got me into some class where I took Algebra and Advanced Algebra during seventh grade.

They added an essay portion to the SATs now. You have to prepare, and write it all in 25 minutes. Another 800 points to the total.

So now it's out of 2400.
YAY!

What the... ?

It's easy to blame Bush on your problems (and often appropriate), but seriously.. even I don't have a tin foil hat that big.

Well...hes giving our schools like...Standardized Tests at a rate 10 fold... soooo it seems appropriate that he make an 800 point essay which will, in high school, will probably look even worse than it will be (im a gifted student, but troubled writer).

The SATs aren't created, regulated, or administered by the federal government. They're produced by the College Board, a private, non-profit company.

While the Bush family would certainly be capable of meddling with the affairs of the College Board, I can't imagine any real motive. So far as I know, most students aren't even required to take the SATs (I didn't, and I got into a great school, but here in the midwest the ACTs are very popular).

I remember what a pain the ITBS and ITEDs were when I was in school (though it was always gratifying to get back the results and see those double-nines ;)), but as an adult (or close approximation thereof) I don't see the harm in them. Certainly testing young people to better understand their educational development is harmless. It's what you do with those results that can be harmful, and that is where I begin to have problems with Bush (and Spellings).

Yeah but really, these tests are grueling, and those of us who are smart but dont test well wont get in to any super good colleages(sp?). The SAT or whatever you take in their place effect your school choice, which is why the essay is evil, if you are a troubled writer (like myself) but in all other subjects you are truly gifted (also like myself) and the essay is worth 800 points....i shudder to think about how low my score is going to be, and many other of the nerds (also like myself) in class, we truly suck at writing, but everywhere else its always an A+ on that report card....the SAT are gonna hurt when i take em in high school...and i still say it is Bush's fault (i hate that guy)

Well, you certainly have a point, there.

I test really (really) well, which is lucky because my GPA was in high school atrocious. I got into the college I did only because of my ACT scores. Granted, my GPA wasn't bad because I struggled with the work; rather I struggled with doing the work -- I all but gave up on homework about halfway through my Junior year (don't try that one, folks; I nearly didn't graduate). But I digress.

You're right that if too much emphasis is put on test scores, it can keep an otherwise great student out of the college of his or her choice. Unfortunately, young people in that situation only have one option: work harder. You may never be a good test taker, but college admissions offices generally dont' put all of their eggs in one basket. Get yourself involved in extracurricular activities, get promoted to President of this and Secretary of that. Apply for lots of scholarships, awards, honor societies, etc. Get a pile of really impressive letters of recommendation. Do volunteer work. Do an internship or two. Any one of those things will help offset a bad test score.

And if all else fails, you can always put your post count on your application.

About the leaving blank/guessing, etc. idea. Last I recall, getting a question wrong on a multiple-choice with 4 options cuts 1/3 point(1/4 for 5 option question), skipping is 0, and getting a question right gives a full point. So in this case, let's take 4 problems. YOu skip all 4, and that's 0 points. Now if you get 3 wrong and 1 right, you still get the same amount of points. Anyone with a heartbeat should be able to get 1 out of 4 on average...because it's pure chance/guessing. Any remotely educated guess gains you a benefit.
In my screwed up score, the section I fared worst- reading comprehension- my percentage righ was 55%- and it said I skipped 6 questions, which is just...pretendous! I never skip questions and therefore show my royal disrespect to the sticking pages. (Middle fingers and flaming arrows to you paper companies!!!) If I'd gotten what's closest to 55% right of those 6 questions, I'd get +2 points, not sure how that figures to the total score.
I was going to retake the SAT to get a fair score (the one I have is good enough to qualify any school in the state, but this is more so for closure among other reasons). But now they got the dang essay part! Nooooooooo!!!!! Burn in hell!! :trogdor: I"ll just retake the ACT instead.

They do the penalty to discourage guessing. If you really look at the math, You miss 3, get 1 correct (the odds for guessing) then you end up with a net score of 0. Same as if you had left them blank. When I was taking them, I would leave them blank if I couldn't get them down to 2 answers. If you can narrow the choices down to two, then guess. Otherwise, you are better off leaving them blank. As for my score, 1480 here.

IJ, your comment on the ACTs getting you into college reminded me a ton of one of my friends from high school. He finished with a GPA of 1.7, but scored a 1560 on the SAT and won a National Merit scholarship to anywhere in the country. He was guaranteed a 4 year full tuition scholarship + $500 a year to anywhere he wanted to go. Unfortunately, after just a couple of years, his GPA at the university was so bad, he lost them and had to drop out of school.

Well, my GPA wasn't quite that bad (2.55, IIRC), but I can sympathize. I was able to keep my GPA in college up above 3.25. I kind of wish I'd worked hard enough to get on the Dean's List (3.6), but I've no regrets.

I think it's unfortunate about your friend. I mean, people who can get 1560 on the SAT won't have any trouble being successful in their lives (if they want to), but I feel bad for the people who could have used that scholarship. The same goes when I see really rich kids getting big scholarships. I think it's great that they did well enough in school to get a scholarship, but if you don't need the money, give it to someone else.
