Is there anywhere on the Internet that has like a chart or something of how much of a percentage you need to speed up a song by to go up in pitch by a half-step or a step or etc.?

I know you can speed up songs by specifying time or pitch in Audacity, so you may be able to find out using that.

(there's probably an easier way though)

I think he's asking if there's a way to determine the exact amount of speed-up needed to accomplish specific pitch changes.

I'll answer that one, Einoo.

An octave higher is exactly double the speed of the original (200%), and an octave lower is exactly 50%.

To figure out how much increase you need for a half step, you need to figure out a logorhythmic increment.

(I know because I've done these before).

So to answer your question, here's a rough chart of percentages for different speeds.

Half Steps Above Original - Percentage.

1 - 105.95%
2 - 112.46%
3 - 118.82%
4 - 125.99%
5 - 133.48%
6 - 141.42%
7 - 149.83%
8 - 158.74%
9 - 168.18%
10 - 178.18%
11 - 188.77%
12 - 200%

To get percentages for half steps lower, just invert the percentage
and move the decimal 4 places.

The exact formula I use for this is 2 ^(x/12)- where x = number of half steps higher that you're trying to make it.

Uhhhhhhh, wow Didy, thanks.

Excuse me while I copy that into TextEdit.

I've used this a lot with my own music production work.

[s]So for making the pitch lower, theoretically you could just make "x" negative, right?[/s]

I need to learn to read ALL OF THE POST FIRST.

There's nothing quite like going to Wal-Mart with 3 women, and having them pick out their undergarments in front of you. Especially when they're asking me if on which pair of panties would look best.
